What is the difference between anime and manga?

It is worth pointing out the difference between these two styles. Anime is the animated version, while manga are just still images. Therefore, anime can be watched on TV, like a cartoon, while manga is similar to a comic book. Although some people argue that anime and manga can be just Japanese, there are a few anime shows, which are produced in the USA, but are still considered anime. Same goes for manga.

Now, in this article, we are going to consider each drawing of an anime or a manga character, as an anime drawing. Whats more, these drawings are very recognisable by their specific style, which we are also going to discuss.

Section 3 Inking Your Drawing

All right things should be looking pretty good at this point. You have your character drawn the way you like and youre ready to take the plunge into inking. Theres no going back after this step.

Grab a quality, fine-tipped pen and very slowly and carefully go over your lines. Its best to not lift the pen halfway through a line try and maintain a steady solid pen stroke. Once everything is properly outlined, let it dry a bit, then gently erase any sketch lines that remain. If done properly, you should be left with a very clean looking drawing of your character.

Whether you are using a digital media or pen and paper, Tom Richmond has a great inking tutorial if you want to take a look.

Shade The Hair And Add The Chin

Female anime character face drawing step by step

Hair is typically shiny, so, therefore, shaded with high contrast. The shading can be the difference of making hair look Manga-tastic or taking you back to square one. It goes without saying, the better the pen and the stronger technique you have, the more likely it is that youre going to produce the best results. Click here to read more about which pens are best used for shading.

TIP: Use photographic reference for help on highlighting hair.

Draw lines that curve slightly inward down from the chin. These simple lines form your characters neck. Men usually have thicker necks than women, so bear that in mind. The age also determines the neck as in Manga, very old and very young males are drawn with skinny necks. You can shade the neck if you like but keep it simple and dont overdo it.

From here, you can use a Chameleon Art Products Detail Pen to make permanent line drawings, an eraser to remove the pencil lines and use a Chameleon Pen and its innovative Mixing Chamber to shade the hair.

Manga first became popular in the 20th century when laws prohibiting the publication of this kind of artwork were lifted. It has since become a great part of Japanese culture and the majority of the country often read Manga cartoons.

Plan Out Your Drawing & Draw Larger To Smaller

Estimate your proportions before you start drawing. You can see that in the above example the girl is 6 1/2 heads tall . By comparing the size of different parts or objects in your drawing to one another you will be less likely to make a mistake.

Regardless of what you are drawing start with the larger shapes first. You dont need to always start with the absolute largest shape but definitely dont start with the smaller details.

If you area drawing a person start with the head and work your way down through the rest of the body. Dont draw the smaller details like the facial features until you have the shape of the entire body.

Drawing this way will make it a lot easier to fix mistakes. For example if you fully draw out the head with all of the details of the facial features you may then find that the body doesnt actually fit on your drawing area. You will then have to start over and redraw the entire face again.

Some of these mistakes can be easier to fix if drawing digitally but that doesnt mean that you should not learn to draw in the correct order.

This part should be a piece of cake, right? You have a million ideas floating around in your head all you have to do is pick one.

Easier said than done, I know. But for this tutorial, lets start with a simple human .

Once you have something in mind, start putting down some very rough doodles of how you want things to look. This is where you figure out the characters features, expression, overall style, etc. Dont focus on quality line work or anything here you just need something as a base for your actual sketch. Its a great idea to use something as a reference when figuring out how you want your characters features to look. Find some images online of manga characters you like, or even use photos of real people. Whatever works best for you.

Creating a zine or a comic is pretty complex, so why not start with creating small items?

Today, I will explain how to prepare art for acrylic keychains, which are easy to make and look cute with chibi characters!

An acrylic keychain usually requires three separate data, depending on the printing vendor template.

Open the template, and paste these images on separate layers, usually the following:

Then, send the data to the printing vendor.

For the artwork, choose the data you want to use.

At the top, indicate where to place the hole for the keyring chain.

Make sure you dont draw anything over the hole.

The white fill is the base color under the illustration.

Without this white base, the illustration will be printed directly on the transparent acrylic, which makes the colors appear translucent and hard to see.

To print your illustration as you created it, make sure to create a white fill layer.

It is easy to create this data create a duplicate of the illustration layer and fill it with a solid color. The printing vendor will print this layer in white.

Because it sits under the illustration, the shape should be a silhouette of the artwork. If you want certain parts to appear transparent, you can remove the white fill on those parts.

Cut area shows where the acrylic board will be cut.

The layer can be purely black. Fill the area surrounding the illustration in black.

Avoid creating a complex cut border, as the keyring maker may not be able to cut it.

How To Draw Less Stiff Poses

For greater realism, poses shouldnt be stiff.

Learning to draw a natural pose takes some observation and practice. To be able to draw fluid, less stiff poses, its important to understand natural ranges of human movement. If any part of the anatomy youre drawing just looks off, as if it is too stiff, theres a high chance youre drawing a pose that isnt physically possible.

Drawing from observation is a good way to learn about these natural ranges. If youre only drawing from cartoon models or other artists drawings, you wont so easily learn where the limits lie.

Another way of preventing stiffness is by carefully observing muscular and skeletal structure. Thats one reason why its important to learn the basics of anatomy drawing before diving into more complex poses.

What makes anime unique?

Anime has a very distinguishable style. When drawing anime, there are a few rules to follow. Most importantly, the exaggerated features:

  • Eyes. The eyes are always large and take up almost half of the characters face. Whats more, they usually contain black circles in the middle with coloured outside rings. The colours can also be exaggerated, some eyes, for example, can be purple.
  • Hair. The anime hair is usually in a very strange, unnatural shape. The characters hairstyles are always exaggerated and, once again, the colours can vastly vary.
  • Facial expressions. Facial expressions are conveyed in an interesting way. For example, teardrops in the eyes is a sign of embarrassment. Facial expressions are strongly exaggerated, making the characters very expressive.
