It makes them more masculine than their shonen rival. Smaller eyes tend to make the bishojo seductive, hence it is used mostly for older or sexualized characters.

Drawing A Complete Anime Character

It is not a small feat to draw a complete anime character but mastering all the different parts needed you are able to draw the character you are imagining.

Face and head as a whole, body, and clothing and you have a complete anime character in your hands. As with everything, learning these things take time and only when you have the patience to learn you can become the anime and manga artist you have always wanted to be.

Imagining your very own character might not be as hard you think. Only the execution part is what takes time and energy. Luckily drawing anime characters is very forgiving as you can even leave the nose completely off if you wish to do so.

Even the head can be pretty unique in shape, pointy ears and chin. Anime can be seen as a natural entry point to drawing characters, just because its so simplified in its raw form, but if you really want to push it, you can draw amazing and very realistic characters with this style.

Its up to you how far you want to take this style of yours. From simplified to extreme realism. Anime and manga style lets you do both even at the same time if skilled enough.

There are plenty of excellent tutorials to help you on your way and here are some of the best ones available for free. Some of showing speed paint like drawing and others explaining more of the process.

Beginners Mistake And How To Avoid Them

How To Draw Manga Eyes : Serious VS Innocent

There are quite a few mistakes, that beginners make. Here are the Mistakes, that I see the most and my tips on how you can avoid these mistakes.

The eyes look deadWhen the eyes, you drew, are looking like they are dead, then you should add reflections in the eye. Reflections make an Eye look alive!

The eye looks flatIf your drawings look flat then you should check your shadows again. when you draw a shadow in the wrong place or when you draw your shadows too dark then the drawing will look flat. Also if you don´t draw the eyelids correctly then your eye may look flat as well.

Don´t hate your workI know, that it can be frustrating when you want to draw something and it doesn´t turn out as you imagined it. Then you will hate your drawing or you will think, that you can´t draw in in the worst case you may even stop drawing.

The truth is, you can´t expect to be good at drawing when you start out. It will take practice and you should look at your improvements and not at your failures. Just look at what you did wrong and make it better in the next drawing. Don´t get hung up on your mistakes.

Keep it light in the beginningDuring the sketching phase, you should keep your lines light. So don´t push the pencil down to hard. By keeping it light, you will be able to erase the lines easier.

So be very careful about selling your Anime fanart online or offline. You can read all about fanart and why it is illegal right here on my blog as well.

The Tools You Will Need For This Tutorial

In all honesty, all you need is a graphite pen and a piece of paper. Thats it!

I would recommend a rather soft graphite Pen like a B4 or B5 but really any pen, that can achieve a huge variance in tone is just fine.

You can also just use any paper you would like even though I recommend a stronger drawing paper, something, that can survive some erasing. I usually use sketch paper or an illustration block.

You will need an Eraser and some whiteout. A kneadable eraser would be best but any eraser will do in the beginning.

This tutorial is meant for exercise purposes. So the tools I mentioned above are more then enough for you to learn how to draw Anime eyes but if you really want to create an illustration I would strongly recommend you to get a set of graphite pens that go from HB to at least 6B and you should definitely get some drawing Paper or illustration board!

How To Draw Anime Hair

Anime characters usually have hair that is out of this world. Full of imagination and awe. And from that point of view, you can let your creativity flow free as the hair you are about to draw.

There are only a few rules to keep in mind, and these tutorials will show you more about those. The key thing is to have fun and really develop a personality for your character through hair.

Start with the basic shapes, and move to the details. This way you can better see the volume and personality of the hair before moving on to the details. As you start to draw the details for the hair, its harder to go back and fix things. So do nail down the form first and details only at the last stage.

Drawing Female Anime Eyes

  • 1Draw the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a downward curving line for the upper lash line. Add a curved tail at one end , going down and back toward the other end of the line, so the upper lash line is C-shaped. Make the line about 1/3rd the length of the first curved line you drew. Then, make the upper lash line thick and bold with your pencil. For the lower lash line, draw a short, upward curving line centered under the first lash line you drew.XResearch source
  • Female anime eyes are usually bigger and rounder than male anime eyes.
  • Make the eyes about 1/6th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if youre drawing one. That way, theyll look big and exaggerated.
  • 2Sketch an oval between the lash lines. Make the top and bottom of the oval overlap with the lash lines so the top and bottom are hidden. Make the width at the widest part of the oval the same as the length of the lower lash line. This will be the iris of the eye.XResearch source
  • 3Draw a small circle near the top of the oval. Place the circle off to one side. Later on, youll leave this circle white, and it will look like light reflecting off of the eye.XResearch source
  • Make the circle about 1/10th the size of the oval.
  • It doesn’t matter which side you place the circle on, but it should be on the same side on both eyes if you’re drawing 2.
  • When youre done with your drawing, this circle will look like light reflecting off of the eye too.
  • Remember not to shade in the white circles.

How To Draw "Male" Anime Eyes From 6 Different Anime ...

Youre getting close to finishing. Excited yet?

If you used a tablet or drawing pad, your image should already be on your computer. You can go ahead and open it in Painter or whatever program you prefer to use for shading and coloring.

If you created your sketch on paper, make sure its free of any debris and scan it into your PC.

When it comes to picture editing software, the possibilities are endless. There are hundreds of books out there that go over every feature and offer thousands of tips and tricks, but were going to keep it basic for this tutorial and give you a very broad overview of what goes into coloring and shading digitally.

So, you should now have your image on your computer. Go ahead and open your drawing in your program of choice.

Its a good idea to separate areas of your drawing out into several layers. Create a layer for the background, a layer for the hair, a layer for the skin, and a layer for the eyes. This makes things easier if you make a mistake and need to undo something.

Choose whichever area youd like to start with first and with the brush tool and color of your choice, begin filling in the whitespace. Take your time so you dont go outside the lines . Repeat this step for each layer until your entire image is colored how you like.

Like I said, using picture editing software can get very, very complicated, so just take your time trying out new things and see what you can come up with.

Shade The Hair And Add The Chin

Hair is typically shiny, so, therefore, shaded with high contrast. The shading can be the difference of making hair look Manga-tastic or taking you back to square one. It goes without saying, the better the pen and the stronger technique you have, the more likely it is that youre going to produce the best results. Click here to read more about which pens are best used for shading.

TIP: Use photographic reference for help on highlighting hair.

Draw lines that curve slightly inward down from the chin. These simple lines form your characters neck. Men usually have thicker necks than women, so bear that in mind. The age also determines the neck as in Manga, very old and very young males are drawn with skinny necks. You can shade the neck if you like but keep it simple and dont overdo it.

From here, you can use a Chameleon Art Products Detail Pen to make permanent line drawings, an eraser to remove the pencil lines and use a Chameleon Pen and its innovative Mixing Chamber to shade the hair.

How To Make Eyes Look Unique

So here is a problem a lot of artists run in to after some time. I struggled with this as well, when I was starting out to draw. How can I make my characters all look unique? Or better yet, how can I make their eyes all look unique?

Well, the answer is probably way easier than you may think. Just change little but defining thinks of how you draw their eyes. For example, slightly tilt the eyes in a direction to make them look a little dimwitted or to make them look sharper. Make the eyes extremely round or insanely slim. Give them no reflections in their eyes to make them almost appear dead or evil. Or give them a lot of reflections to make them look innocent or happy.

Just play around with these little defining changes and you will be surprised how many different eyes you will be able to draw! Just take a look at these Sketches I did.

Shapes And Colors Of Anime Eyes

It is helpful to divide the eye creation process into a few steps.

Lets go back and break it down once more and add the coloring process. Let me show you some coloring techniques parting from the grayscale drawing that we already have from the previous part:

Remember: On top of the basic grays with their respective gradients, add brightness and textures that match the style of your drawing .

Steps 1 and 2, start by making the eyelids, this will help you to figure out where to place the iris and the rest of the eye.

In step 3, add some basic grey tones and then

In step 4, I set the color layers blending mode. In this case, I used Overlay, but you are free to try a few out and choose another mode that you like better. This way, the color that you add will be perfectly integrated with the gray tones. On the right, you can see where the blending modes for layers are located in my software. The default mode is Normal. From here you can play around and find which mode you are comfortable with.

If youre aiming for colorful, engaging anime eyes, vibrant, saturated colors may be best.

    Drawing A Scared Expression

For a scared expression yet again draw the chin lower down due to the open mouth. Draw the eyebrows high up on the face with the inner tips significantly higher than a normal expression. Draw the eyes wide open and draw the irises much smaller then normal so that they are not touching the eyelashes. Draw the mouth shaped sort of like a bean and curving downwards.

    Start With A Simple Shirt

    Anime clothes drawing will vary depending on how youd like your character to be dressed. For beginners, a simple shirt design is the easiest starting point.;

    Around the neck of your character, draw sloping lines downwards and around the neck, leaving a small gap in the middle, to create an open-collar shirt.;

Start with the shirt collar before working on the sleeves or details.

Along the arms, add a light line in the middle where the elbow crease would be, with two slightly curved lines around the wrists for the ends of the sleeves. From here, you can draw a line straight down from the open collar to the waist, leaving an upside down V shape at the bottom. Draw two lines from either side of the hips in to meet the bottom of the V shape to form the ends of the shirt. A few dots up the centerline will give you the buttons.

Buttons and crease lines help to make your clothing appear more realistic.
