Free! was a breakout anime in many ways. For starters, it not only acknowledged the existence of an extremely large and always ignored female fanbase, it treated them as equals to their male counterparts and gave them what theyve always desired blatant man-service.

Lgbtq+ Anime That You Need To Watch Now

The world of anime is a diverse one, as the medium tells just as many deep, socially relevant and important stories as it does light heart-eyed or action-packed fare.

What may surprise many who arent terribly familiar with anime is the wealth of LGBTQ+ focused series out there. Sure, many series have gratuitous fanservice and crossdressing is a recurring trope across the board, but there are earnest stories out there with a strong, if not singular, focus on LGBTQ+ characters.

To get started you need to know your terminology. Shounen-ai is boys love, while shoujo-ai is girls love. Yaoi is explicit boys love, so youre going to get some sexy times on screen. Likewise, yuri is explicit girls love.

Now that youve got that down pat, here is our list of LGBTQ+ anime to watch!

My Fave Is Problematic: Free

Its March 2013, and Kyoto Animation has dropped a new 30-second advertisement. Unlike the regular shorts that showcase the studios animation and feature petite girls, it focuses on four swimsuit-clad boys cavorting by the pool. In just 48 hours, this short, dubbed the Swimming Anime spreads throughout the anime community like wildfire, with its own fanfiction, AMVs, and even a petition by Crunchyroll to have an anime released. Lo and behold, only a few short months later, Kyoto Animation releases a full-length series featuring those same swimmers titled Free! Iwatobi Swim Club.;

I didnt experience it for myself until a few years later, when the sequel series Eternal Summer was airing. Once I caved to the shows immense popularity and watched it in its entirety, I too came to understand what the hype was about. As a teenager, I was enamored with these beautiful boys and the melodrama surrounding them. It became my comfort anime, as I found it to be a fun and relaxing watch during those bad days. Re-watching the anime as an adult, however, made me realize that the show that brought me such comfort over the years has quite a few things amiss.

One of the biggest gripes I have now with Free! is the amount of fanservice the show throws at you. While the perfectly sculpted muscles of the main male cast is what led to the shows boom in popularity, it has also caused harm for the show.

How Have Lgbt Anime Characters Evolved Throughout History

The state of LGBT representation in anime differs from that in American cartoons due to different cultural attitudes regarding sexuality and gender identity. In the West, homosexuality has historically been considered sinful, and for much of the 20th century, mainstream film and TV avoided directly addressing the existence of non-heterosexual identities. By the 1990s, there was more gay representation of varying quality in American movies and TV aimed at adult audiences, including gay characters in adult-oriented cartoons such as Smithers in The Simpsons and Big Gay Al in South Park, but the issue was still considered too controversial for media aimed at children, which restricted most American cartoons. As same-sex marriage has become legalized nationwide and transgender issues are also beginning to be better understood by the public today in America, there’s been a slow but steady increase in LGBT cartoon characters including those marketed towards younger audiences. Notable characters in the current movement include the pairing of Korra and Asami in The Legend of Korra, the pansexual genderfluid robot BMO in Adventure Time, and the “gay space rocks” who make up much of the cast of Steven Universe.

I am an LGBT anime character and I am proud of it!” – Nathan from Tiger and Bunny

Ryouma and Izumi from the BL anime Love Stage may not be on this list, but they are still a lovely LGBT anime couple!

    Lgbtq+ Characters In Anime

There is something about anime that often draws in people who arent straight and/or cis, especially young people. I dont quite know what that is. But for whatever reason, young LGBTQ people are being exposed to this media that often portrays LGBTQ characters in incredibly problematic ways. Its harmful to have your only exposure to characters like you be in works that dont do them justice. And as someone who was once a young person trying to figure out her sexual orientation and watching anime at the same time, its frustrating and discouraging.

Yaois lesbian equivalent is yuri, but the two have fairly different modes of portraying homosexual relationships. Rather than the brutality of yaoi, yuri is often gentler and more sanitized but it is nearly always for the male gaze. Fraught with fan service and busty women, yuri is often awkward-feeling from a womans point of view. Valkyrie Drive is an example of this weirdly-sexualized genre, with tits that defy gravity and women who turn into weapons when they get turned on. Other shows, like Yurikuma Arashi, have less visual fan service, but still have bizarre plots like gay bears from space who arrive on Earth and decide to seduce a human girl . Even Citrus, recently adapted to an anime, is not perfect. While the romance at first glance is sweet and caring, the characters are adopted siblings. Way to go, Japan.

These Lgbt Anime Characters Portray Their Sexuality And/or Gender In An Inspiring And Positive Way

    From: No.6

GuardianEnzo has already written about how quietly revolutionary No.6‘s casual integration of a gay romance into a sci-fi thriller series aimed at general audiences is.

    From: Neon Genesis Evangelion

Though as far as including same-sex romance in popular sci-fi anime goes, you can’t get more popular than Evangelion! Kaworu only appeared in one episode of the original TV series, but this mysterious romantic made an instant impression, while Shinji, who up until that point had been very unsuccessful in his relationships with women, found momentary happiness with Kaworu before Evangelion did its thing and made heads explode.

    From: Tiger and Bunny

When Fire Emblem was first introduced, I was worried they’d fall into the ugly stereotypes gender-nonconforming and gay anime characters sometimes do . But while Fire Emblem fits some stereotypes , they’re as strong and upstanding a hero as any, and the main message of the plot in the sequel movie basically amounts to “queer people are the best!

    From: Pokemon

Anime fans, being a ship-happy bunch, have probably theorized that EVERY anime character is secretly gay at some point or another. But James of Pokemon‘s infamous Team Rocket pings off more people’s gaydars than most. At the very least, the guy sure loves to crossdress, and the dub writers, typically heavily restricted by censorship, loved tosneak indouble-entendres.

Uragiri Wa Boku No Namae Wo Shitteiru

Uragiri also sometimes referred to as The Betrayal knows my name is a bishounen anime which is dedicated to having more appeal to the gay or female eye. The Zweilt Guardians are composed of gorgeous fighter males except for one girl member. Yuki is previously a kind teenager with hidden supernatural powers, which makes him the target of an evil demonic organization The Duras. After Yuki is saved from The Duras by The Zweilt Guardians, what ensues is a mass magical battle between the two groups. Uragiri is a pseudo gay anime, and the nature of homosexuality in the show is ostensible. It leaves for the audience to decide if the male warriors share homosexual bonds, although there are cases which seems to point towards it.
