How To Draw MALE ANIME MANGA CHARACTERS From BASIC SHAPES

Now that you have your characters head with all of the needed facial features, its probably a good time to add some ears and hair .

Ears are relatively simple unless youre showing them really up close. For this tutorial, theyll be pretty basic. Typically, ears should go from about the top of the eyes to the bottom of the nose. Its usually a good idea to look at a picture of an ear for reference during this part just so you can get a more solid idea of the shape. Obviously the earlobe will be thicker than the tip of the ear, but its entirely up to you when deciding how big they should be or what shape looks best.

Manga hair this is where you can really use your imagination. Short, long, curly, straight, spiked, bangs, tied back. The options are almost endless. Lets keep it simple, though.

Very lightly, draw a rough outline of the hair. Dont worry about parts or points or anything like that yet. Just focus on where you want the hairline to sit and how it should lay around the ears. From here you can start experimenting with length, bangs, and more of the fine details. Unlike realistic hair that is made up of millions of individual strands, manga hair is drawn in several sections or clumps. Once the shape of the hair is how you like it, you can start adding some finer lines throughout the different sections of hair to indicate the way it flows and where shadows will lie.

Face Proportions For An Anime Character

The base character drawing proportions used in this tutorial are shown in the illustration above. If youve seen some of the other tutorials here on AnimeOutline you may already be aware of these.

If not the proportions are as follows:

  • Eyes draw a horizontal line directly through the middle of the head and draw the eyes below that line
  • Ears make a second horizontal line between the halfway line and the chin and draw the ears between those two lines
  • Nose above the line used for the bottom of the ears
  • Mouth draw a line between the bottom of ears/nose line to get the position of the bottom lip and draw the mouth just slightly above that

You can draw the eyebrows and eyelids slightly above the eyes.

Please keep in mind that the size and position of the facial features in the examples below will change based on character type and facial expressions.

Also be aware that these are only suggested proportions for making a character look anime. Different anime styles can still have different proportions.

  • When you are certain that everything is in its proper location, trace over the light lines you initially used with darker ones. This will be especially useful for designs that are vast or intricate.
  • Light lines are simpler to draw, easier to correct if you make a mistake, and require less force from your hand because you dont have to press as hard.
  • Making a rough sketch first and adding smoother lines afterwards is a smart practice even when sketching digitally.
  • Another activity to help settle your hand is to trace your own lines.
  • Try to use as few lines as you can when drawing.
  • Its acceptable to add additional lines if your first line is incorrect however, avoid adding lines only for the purpose of adding more. Erase that section of your drawing if you make too many mistakes, then start again.

Make A Plan Of Overall Drawing

  • Before you begin drawing, make an estimate of your proportions. You will be less likely to make a mistake by contrasting the sizes of various components or things in your picture.
  • Whatever you are sketching, start by drawing the largest forms first. Its not necessary to always begin with the largest shape, but you shouldnt begin with the finer details either.
  • Start with the head when drawing someone and work your way down through the rest of the body. Wait until you have the overall outline of the body before drawing the finer details, such as the facial characteristics.
  • This method of drawing will make it much simpler to correct errors.
  • For instance, you might discover that the body doesnt actually fit on your drawing space if you fully sketch out the head with all of the facial feature details.
  • The complete face will then need to be drawn from scratch.
  • Drawing digitally can make some of these errors easier to remedy, but it doesnt mean you shouldnt learn to draw things correctly.

Fill In Minimal Facial Details

What is your character doing? Unless youre conveying a big emotional moment, keep your anime characters nose and mouth small and simple. In many instances, you can do both with just a simple line or two. During big moments where your character needs to express an emotion, youll want to exaggerate the mouth.

Section 21 Drawing Manga Eyes

There are probably hundreds of different styles you can use for eyes, but we will just go over some of the basics. For obvious reasons, male eyes differ greatly from female eyes, just as evil eyes look much different than good guy eyes. We could spend hours going over every single nuance, so for this tutorial, well keep it simple.

If youre interested this quora anwser is a reasonably comprehensive explanation of what different aspects of eyes could mean when drawing your Manga.

Lets start off with a basic female manga eye first. Start by drawing a curved line where the top of the eyelid and the eyelashes will sit. From here you will want to draw a large oval shape underneath, roughly the same width and the first line you made. Leave one side of the oval open .

Now you should have something that is starting to resemble an eye. If for whatever reason you arent happy with it thus far, just gently erase and start again. This is why you are pressing so lightly with the pencil. When the inking starts, theres no going back.

Inside this first oval, youll want to draw another smaller oval that is slightly overlapped on the top by the eyelashes. Then, draw yet another oval around pupil to represent the iris . If youre tired of drawing ovals, too bad There are more coming.

This next part is something very common among manga and anime character eyes.

Light reflections.

For the interested, these reflections are called catchlights in both film and photography.

Start With A Simple Shirt

Anime clothes drawing will vary depending on how youd like your character to be dressed. For beginners, a simple shirt design is the easiest starting point.

Around the neck of your character, draw sloping lines downwards and around the neck, leaving a small gap in the middle, to create an open-collar shirt.

Start with the shirt collar before working on the sleeves or details.

Along the arms, add a light line in the middle where the elbow crease would be, with two slightly curved lines around the wrists for the ends of the sleeves. From here, you can draw a line straight down from the open collar to the waist, leaving an upside down V shape at the bottom. Draw two lines from either side of the hips in to meet the bottom of the V shape to form the ends of the shirt. A few dots up the centerline will give you the buttons.

Buttons and crease lines help to make your clothing appear more realistic.

Now You Can Focus On Specific Details

Manga art style contrasts areas of minimalistic detail with areas of high detail. In most cases, the face and skin will be more minimalistic allowing all the detail to be focused on the eyes.

For your character, pick the areas of concentrated detail that will best represent their story. This will help to make your character as expressive as possible.

Refine Shading And Color

You can now paint or shade the image in black and white. As you indicate shading, make a note for yourself about where the light source is located. Try to keep the shading realistic, so that your drawing comes off as more believable. It can be helpful to use a photo reference for shading if you have trouble visualizing where the light and shadows will hit. If you are working in color, avoid using black for shading. Instead, use a deeper version of the way that the color looks in the light.

Create The Face Structure And Neck

Drawing an anime boy character is quite similar to drawing an anime girl. Before you add the amusing facial traits, you should first create the face and necks contour.

Lightly draw a freehand circle with a vertical baseline going straight down the center. This should extend as far as youd like the chin to be past the bottom of the circle.

Then, draw a vertical line, dipping in more toward the bottom, that runs down each edge of the circle. The bottom of the face will be where these connect.

Create two vertical lines for the head and two lines off to the sides for the tops of the shoulders underneath the face.

How To Draw Nose And Ears Of The Character

Anime characters noses are frequently undetectable unless youre looking at them from the side. At the halfway point between the horizontal line and the chin, draw a brief, straightforward vertical line down the middle of the face to represent your characters nose.

  • If you want the characters nose to be large, lengthen the line.
  • Make your characters nose the smallest facial feature.
  • The vertical line you created will overlap with the nose. Make it darker than the vertical line to make it easier to see, or get rid of the vertical line around the nose.
  • Although its not always the case, male anime characters can have more prominent noses.

Draw a brief horizontal line under the vertical line to depict the bottom of your characters nose if you want the nose to stand out more.

Additionally, add a triangle-shaped shadow to the side of the nose to make it appear as though the light is coming from the side.

You dont even need to draw a nose for some types of anime, like chibi!

Draw The Eyes Nose And Mouth

On either side of the face, create two half-oval shapes with short, curved lines within for the ears.

Youll begin focusing on the largest featurethe eyesby moving inside the face circle and aligning yourself with the ears.

Drawing anime eyes can be challenging, but remember to simplify it by breaking it down into shapes.

Start by drawing two curving lines on either side, with the width of the space between them representing the size of the eyes.

Draw the curved lines for the eyes next, followed by a lighter curved line for the eyebrows.

The pupils should be shaded in as a little circle at the top of the eyeballs, and the eyelashes should be added as a few short lines on the curving lines below.

Add a little V-shape or two short lines along the middle guideline to represent the nose. Include this to finish the features since the majority of anime mouth drawings consist of a single line in the lower third of the face.

Drawing An Ordinary Girl Anime Character

male heads manga tips and tricks
