Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the only movie on the list since it’s canon to Dragon Ball Super. The studio had the time and budget, so the quality was top-notch. The fight scenes never, even once, used the repeated animation. Each action was detailed and the animation was smooth.

It had vivid colors and a complete story which really opens up some great narrative possibilities moving forward.

It streams on Netflix, Prime Video, and STARZ.

The Best Dragon Ball Z Episodes

Dragon Ball Z 1St Episode : Watch Dragon Ball Streaming Online Hulu ...

Dragon Ball Z, is undoubtedly one of the most popular animes of all time. It has infected our culture and spawning memes, catchphrases, and slang along the way: Brolic, Over 9000!, Ka-mah-ha-meh-haaaa! With a slew of semi popular video games and the cultural nostalgia economy in full swing keeping favorites like Gohan alive, DBZ attempted a comeback in 2015. The series had a new storyline under the title dubbed Dragon Ball Super, which take place after the Buu saga but before Dragon Ball GT is supposed to have occurred.

Along with Sailor Moon and Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z helped introduce many American pre-teens to anime during the early 2000s when its English-dub experienced a successful run on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block. It spawned a number of card games, video games, films, and thousands of cheap looking, fan-made GeoCities websites dedicated to the anime. Dragon Ball Super has been lucky to have creator Akira Toriyama, who wrote the original 1984 comic that the series was based on, involved. Toriyama was minimally involved in Dragon Ball GT, a previous sequel series that some say is overshadowed by the new series.

With the Dragon Ball Super bringing back the action , we re-examined what made Dragon Ball Z so great and ranked its best episodes. Beware: there’s a whole mess of spoilers ahead, obviously.

Television Specials And Original Video Animations

Three TV specials based on Dragon Ball Z were produced and broadcast on Fuji TV. The first two were Dragon Ball Z: Bardock The Father of Goku in 1990 and Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks in 1993, the latter being based on a special chapter of the original manga. Both were licensed by Funimation in North America and AB Groupe in Europe. In 2013, a two-part hour-long crossover with One Piece and Toriko, titled Dream 9 Toriko & One Piece & Dragon Ball Z Ch Collaboration Special!!, was created and aired.

Additionally, two original video animations bearing the Dragon Ball Z title have been made. The first is Dragon Ball Z Side Story: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, which was originally released in 1993 in two parts as “Official Visual Guides” for the video game of the same title. Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans was a 2010 remake of this OVA. None of the OVAs have been dubbed into English, and the only one to see a release in North America is the 2010 remake, which was subtitled and included as a bonus feature in Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2.

Over 57 video games are bearing the Dragon Ball Z name across a range of platforms from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the current generation consoles, with the most recent release being Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot in 2020.

Season 8 Filler: None

Babidi and his vile magical powers make their appearance for the first time in Season 8, making for a great introduction indeed. It features the brilliant clash between Goku and Majin Vegeta before the rise of Majin Buu and the terrors that ensue. It’s a strong start to an arc that might be too long for many people’s liking but is still undoubtedly a great part of the series.

This season thankfully has no filler, barring a few episodes with extra scenes in them. Thankfully, this minor filler doesn’t take away from what is otherwise a pretty great season of Dragon Ball Z. After all, most episodes of Dragon Ball Z used lengthy shots to pad out the runtime, so pointing this season out, in particular, feels a bit accusatory.

Filler And Differences From The Manga

Top 10 Dragon Ball Z Fights

Main article: FillerFiller is used to pad out the series for many reasons in the case of Dragon Ball Z, more often than not, it was because the anime was running alongside the manga, and there was no way for the anime to run ahead of the manga .

Some of the series’ main heroes and villains

The company behind the anime, Toei Animation, would occasionally make up their own side stories to either further explain things, or simply to extend the series. Filler does not come only in the form of side stories, though sometimes it is as simple as adding some extra attacks into a fight. One of the more infamous examples of filler is the Frieza Saga. After Frieza had set the planet Namek to blow up in five minutes, the final fight between Goku and Frieza still lasted well over five episodes, much less five minutes, although this can be attributed to the fact that Namek simply took longer to explode than Frieza expected. Also, many numerous filler scenes took place while the battle with Frieza was in motion, which accounts for much of the footage during the planet’s explosion.

As the anime series was forced to expand 12 pages of manga text into 25 minutes of animation footage, these changes were introduced to kill time or to allow the writers to explore some other aspect of the series’ universe. The Garlic Jr. Saga between the Frieza Saga and Trunks Saga and the Other World Tournament between the Cell Games Saga and the Majin Buu Saga are both good examples of this.

Cultural Impact And Legacy

Dragon Ball Z was listed as the 78th best animated show in IGN‘s “Top 100 Animated Series”, and was also listed as the 50th greatest animated show in Wizard magazine‘s “Top 100 Greatest Animated shows” list. The series ranked #6 on Wizard’s Anime Magazine on their “Top 50 Anime released in North America”.

Dragon Ball Z‘s popularity is reflected through a variety of data through online interactions which show the popularity of the media. In 2001, it was reported that the official website of Dragon Ball Z recorded 4.7 million hits per day and included 500,000+ registered fans. The term “Dragonball Z” ranked 4th in 1999 and 2nd in 2000 by Lycos‘ web search engine. For 2001, “Dragonball” was the most popular search on Lycos and “Dragonball Z” was fifth on Yahoo!. and “Dragonball” was the third most popular search term in 2002.

In 2015, Ford Motor Company released two commercials featuring characters from the series, the first advertising the Ford Fusion and the second for the Ford Focus.

Season 9 Filler: 274 287 288

There’s only a bit of filler present in the final season of Dragon Ball Z. Episode 274 takes a look at Goku and Vegeta’s adventures through the body of Super Buu before they reach their compatriots. It’s a pretty meaningless episode, although watching Goku and Vegeta bond over the course of this icky adventure is pretty engaging in its own way.

Meanwhile, episodes 287 and 288 focus on the pleasant aftermath of Kid Buu’s demise. This involves Majin Buu trying to fit in with Earthlings who hate him for his past actions, while the latter episode focuses on Goku’s ordeals to protect four dragon eggs. Given that Dragon Ball Z is a show that many people would start loving, these anime-original stories feel like the cherry on top of a well-stuffed and satisfying cake.

Funimation Uncut Episode Listings

Following Season 2, FUNimation replaced the Canadian Ocean cast with their own non-union Texas-based cast. FUNimation’s in-house cast began voicing the episodes beginning at episode 54 where the Ocean Group left off. While the first two Ocean-voiced seasons were heavily censored by FUNimation, the in-house dub was not, this was because the series had shifted from syndication to the less strict cable channel Cartoon Network. FUNimation’s in-house talent continued to dub the series from episode 54 until the series finale at episode 276 . In the UK, AB Groupe hired the Ocean talent to create an alternate English dub for episodes 108-276 . This concurrent dub used the same scripts and episode titles as FUNimation’s in-house dub.
