Expanding Your Business: Other Types Of Vinyl
As you probably can tell by now, I kind of fell in love with printing stickers as soon as I discovered how easy it is.
But there are so many other kinds of vinyl you can try out! Heres an infographic I made of my favorite kinds of vinyl:
If you already know how to work with regular adhesive vinyl, its easy to transition from selling printed vinyl stickers to selling transferable vinyl decals. If you are new to vinyl, youll just have to play around and practice until you get the hang of things!
Adhesive vinyl
Regular adhesive vinyl is cheaper than printable vinyl, but it also takes more work. If you want to sell adhesive vinyl decals, youll have to weed all your designs yourself and provide instructions to your customers for how to transfer them.
Youll need some different supplies for adhesive vinyl:
Heat transfer vinyl
If you want to make iron-on decals instead of stickers, youll need heat transfer vinyl . This vinyl can bond to cotton and polyester fabrics with high heat and pressure, like with an iron or heat press. Here is my guide all about how to use heat transfer vinyl. What Is Printable Vinyl
Printable vinyl was once a mystery to me too, and now its the simplest thing in the world.
You know how you can print on paper in your desktop printer? You can print on vinyl too! For making easy, professional-looking stickers there is nothing better.
But what about regular vinyl? Heres why it doesnt work.
If you try printing on regular vinyl, it wont soak into the vinyl. It just pools and runs off the page. It looks horrible!
Instead, you could try painstakingly laying six different colors of vinyl on your transfer tape. The final product can be absolutely stunning, but the process of weeding and layering and transferring can bea bit of a chore.
Or you could just use printable vinyl, it comes with a special coating on one side that can be printed on beautifully.
When you design with printable vinyl, you dont need to cut out the insides of letters or the centers of objects to make them visible. Hear that? No weeding! No transfer tape! Were talking stickers here.

If you already have the large equipment , the rest of the supplies should be less than $200.
Even if you are buying a new vinyl cutter, and a new color printer, you should be able to get started for under $500.
So, what exactly do you need?
Vinyl cutting supplies
Lets run over the list of the supplies youll need to be able to cut vinyl decals and get started with your own shop. Turns out, its not all that different from the tutorial above!
Ill go over the most important ones in more detail below:
Business supplies
- Printer. Even if you arent printing on vinyl, youll still need a printer for printing labels and shipping receipts. You can use a black & white one for that.
- Camera. If you dont have a camera, you can either use your phone or ask a friend to help out.
- Packing and shipping materials: tape, cardboard, envelopes, electronic scale, boxes & packing material, etc. $50-$80

Selecting a vinyl cutting machine
The largest upfront cost for starting a vinyl decal business is the vinyl cutting machine. These machines range from $200 to over $3000, most machines I recommend run from $200-350.

Now comes the fun part of how to get your sticker design to an actual sticker. How to make homemade stickers can be so much fun to do with your kids. Kids have such a great imagination for things such as designs.
Step 1: Create and design your sticker
This is where you can let your imagination run wild when it comes to making a sticker and customizing.
In this step, you should do a lot of planning with regards to what your sticker will look like.
Planning is a key element for how to make homemade stickers.
If you are planning on drawing a sticker, you can use some of the above writing utensils such as markers or pens perhaps colored pencils to draw and create your sticker design.
If youre looking to be more elaborate in regards to custom stickers, there are other tools you can use as well for designing your sticker.
I have found one of the best ways for me to design stickers is by cutting out interesting things I find in magazines.
Whether or not it is a photography magazine or a graphics magazine, sometimes there are very beautiful pictures and design templates that make great stickers.
The options really are limitless.
Say for example you would like to use interesting quotes or sayings that you find in a magazine along with other images or designs.
You could make a sticker large enough to cover and include all of these different items.
You could also draw something and then find quotes. Place the quotes above, below, or next to the image you draw.

Designing Your Stickers
Select images in the left hand bar and search images. The sheets I have made are summer themed so I searched ice cream, summer, beach and then also searched bike and car. I wanted to be able to create a summer beach feel, thus searched all the things I would associate with summer.
When selecting your images, single images work better like the one below. Also check the image is fully connected so it peels in one piece.
If you choose a sticker image that has multiple layers you have 2 options. You can ungroup it and remove parts you dont need, see the right hand corner on the image below. Or you can weld it, however this will make it one solid image. To remove the black glass I ungrouped and discarded the glass.
If you want to cut shapes into a single image for your stickers like the deck chair below, simple layer the image you want to slice. Right click and highlight to select and click slice in the bottom right corner.
To build your images for your Cricut Joy Vinyl Stickers and to ensure you have the right amount, work on the mat between 4.5across x 11 down . This will give you a visual idea of how much more space you have.

Where Should You Sell Your Vinyl Decals
Alright, so where can you actually sell your decals and stickers? Your two main options are selling online and selling locally. I suggest you do both, as they can help reinforce one another. Its easier to get your initial customers through word-of-mouth, which can help your online presence grow and turn into online sales. Also, having an online shop and social media presence will help with local sales as customers will have a way to later examine your work and you will appear more legitimate.
Create Your Customized Sticker Design
Just as mentioned above, you can create your sticker design using drawings and other elements from magazines, newspapers, and other periodicals.
You want to make sure that you cut out all of those items that you want to use for your homemade sticker design.
The next step involves using shipping tape same as above when making a sticker with wax paper.
However this time instead of placing the sticky part facedown, youll be placing it face up for the bottom portion of your sticker.
Next place your sticker elements very carefully onto the sticky side of the packaging tape. Try to be as certain as possible to the placement of those elements. Once they are on the tape it will be near impossible to remove them without damage to the sticker.
Finally take a second piece of shipping tape and place the sticky side on top of your sticker design elements. Make sure that the tape covers all areas of the sticker.
Be sure to trim the outline of the packing tape so there are no jagged edges to the sticker.
Finally, use either tape or adhesive putty to stick your new homemade sticker to walls, laptops, water bottles, or wherever!

The top printable layer of this vinyl is a little more delicate than regular adhesive vinyl. On its own, the stickers will last for about a year and wont be very water-resistant. But if you protect them with a clear vinyl laminate, then they can last for up to 5 years and withstand being washed.
