How To Draw Anime Eyes Male For Beginners

How to Practice Drawing: Tips on how to improve at drawing

Male manga and anime eyes look quite a bit different from female eyes. They are narrower, and lack the extra eyelashes. However, the process is very much the same.

Begin with a circle for the eyeball. Then add in the upper and lower eyelids. For the male anime eyes, draw the eyelids so they overlap your eyeball. This will make them more narrow.

Finish drawing your male anime eye using the same steps that you used for the female eye. Then use your black pen or marker to ink your drawing.

Add an eyebrow as well. And color your eye drawing the same way as described in the female eye drawing process.

Just like with the female anime eyes, the male eyes can be drawn in many different ways as well. Experiment with different ways to draw the male eyes, and see what style you like most.

Experiment with using different colors for your eyes as well. Dont feel like they always have to be blue or green. They can be purple, pink, brown, or any other color you want to use.

The Art Of Shading Anime Drawings

One of the most important parts of anime drawing is shading the anime drawings. You will have to be very careful while shading because shading can make or break your drawing. It helps to make two-dimensional objects look three-dimensional. You can shade anime drawings easy in three different ways and to learn that you will have to spend some time and that will need some practice too.

You can start off by drawing simple objects and practicing basic shading techniques.

So How Can You Get Inspired To Draw

Inspired practice can be cultivated through new experiences and information. I am often inspired when I look at movie concept art or play a game that excites me. I will look at art styles I love, and just soak it all in.

Make sure in those moments you have a sketchbook or a good;drawing tablet handy to capture that inspiration. Moments like these can be created to feed your projects, ideas, and artwork.

Another way to inspire yourself is to learn a new tool or technique that allows you to do something more efficiently on a computer or paper. Sometimes, you just cant help but grab the closest piece of paper and try out the new tricks you have just learned.

And finally, get out of the house and go somewhere inspiring. Getting out into nature, or go to a museum or art show. By stepping out of your regular routine, and actively seeking these experiences, you can cultivate rapid bursts of inspired learning.

Ultimately, when surrounded by things that inspire you, and are in the emotional state where you are fearless, you can carry out those creative intentions and skyrocket your ability to draw in a short burst of time.

That is the power of inspired practice.

Mix Elements From Various Reference Images

Weve already established that you shouldnt copy or trace artwork. Weve also established that using reference images to inspire your art can be beneficial.

But heres the crux: if you get inspiration from just one type of reference image, you might as well just be copying.

Instead, I suggest that you have a look around your favorite manga and anime artists and art pieces to try and find the things that really appeal to you aesthetically.

You might love the way that this one anime artist draws his characters hair. You may be impressed by that one manga artists use of facial expressions.

Maybe the landscape art of this artist is what inspired you to draw manga and anime in the first place

Gather reference images that inspire you from lots of different sources: the ones that inspire you in terms of characters, others in terms of objects, landscapes, clothes;

The art that youll put together from these images will be completely unique to you: itll reflect the things that you enjoy, and it wont look like it has been copied.

The Shaft Angle Or Shafuto Kakudo

The Shaft Angle is a technique in which the animator makes the character tilt their head at a certain angle. This, of course, was pioneered by Studio Shaft, hence the name. You can find it employed in a ton of anime, especially by Studio Shaft titles like Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Make Light Line Drawings First

Draw using light lines first and then trace over them with darker lines once you are sure that everything is in the right place. This be especially helpful for large or more complex drawings.

Light lines are easier to erase if you make a mistake and easier to make .

Even if drawing digitally its still a good idea to first make a sketch and go over it with cleaner lines afterwards.

Tracing your own lines will also work as another exercise to help steady your hand.

Try and draw with as few lines as possible. If you make a mistake with your first line its fine to add more lines until you land the correct one but dont scribble or draw extra lines just for the sake of it. If you make too many mistakes erase that part of your drawing start over.

Use Shapes In Your Character Designs

Whenever Ive run into a brick wall when attempting to design an original outfit for a character, my solution is to duplicate a characters head a few times and then doodle whatever shape that comes to my mind alongside each one. So Ill focus on a single shape a crescent or triangle, say and then design a costume which resembles that shape. This method works with hairstyles, too.

Drawing Anime Mouths Screaming Angry Or Exerting Effort

Many expressions of the mouth in anime are often interchangeable with others. As an example, above are screaming and angry drawings of a mouth as well at mouths showing exertion. It is often hard to pinpoint the expression exactly without other cues or other facial features for context. While this could seem confusing, it actually works well for the artist.

We only need to learn so many expressions to be able to draw them all. Learn to draw the ones above and you can then draw an anime character expressing anger, or one exerting physical force. You will notice, however, that the difference between those two expressions is likely to be shown in other facial features.

There are some similarities we need to be aware of.

Notice how the majority of these have rounded corners and a line indicating a break between the teeth.

Notice also that the line indicating the separation of the upper and lower teeth is zig-zagged. This type of line indicates some overlap of the jaw when the teeth are clenched together.

Start by drawing lines that will help you with body proportions.

Now, youre going to draw all the sketches of each part of the body.

Starting at the head: make a circle with a triangle at the bottom. That will serve as the jawline.

For the torso: make a rectangle, followed by sausages for the arms. The shapes of the hands will depend on your desired form.

Make a circle for the hips, and sausages for legs, followed by shapes for the feet.

Also, mark the main joints to help you with movement and anatomy: shoulders, elbows, and knees.

Your sketch is finished. Now for the Lineart, try to follow all the main lines and think about fluidity when drawing. Pay attention to the curved lines and straight ones. That really makes a difference.

After youve finished, erase your sketch. Add details such as bone structures and shadows for better results.

All shadows depend on where the light is, so they may change according to each drawing and perspective.

Dont Be Afraid To Fail

I know this may hurt, but being an artist is filled with failures and setbacks. Anime is no stranger to those who get frustrated, come up upon certain artistic roadblocks, and more.

Although it would be fantastic to start drawing world-class anime as soon as you pick up a pencil, it will most likely be a difficult journey getting the basics down naturally, and thats okay!

Dont be discouraged by failures or setbacks. Even the most talented and well-known artists struggled tremendously in their earlier days.

Accept And Be Open To Criticism

As an aspiring anime and manga artist, it can be very hard to take any criticism.

You take helpful tips on how to improve your work as a personal attack, and when people say the drawing might look better like this, all you hear is your art will never be good enough.

Unfortunately, this is a barrier that youll have to get over before you can start to really improve your anime art.

All the very best artists have had to hear thousands of criticisms before they heard all the compliments that they are now getting.

Criticism has helped them to pick out areas of improvement and make progress on their art year after year. We know this is hard, but you have to change your attitude toward criticism.

Every time someone mentions a possible improvement to your drawing technique, take it as a positive thing. Not only does this person see potential in you and wants to help you improve, but they can even suggest actionable strategies for you to do so.

Remember, the criticism that you get is not a measure of your qualities as an artist. But the way that you respond to it is.
