How To Draw Anime Eyes 4 Different Styles

How to Draw ANIME EYES: Female and Male in Pencil – Drawing Tutorial (step by step)

Many of the art tutorials you see online that teach you to draw anime or manga eyes are shown with paper and pencil, so its a breath of fresh air to see a digital tutorial too.

The artist shows you four different styles of anime eyes for you to try and draw. Moe-moe, kind, cool, and emotionless is the four different styles you can learn from this art tutorial.

The video has a voice-over, so its easy to follow the artist and draw along.

How To Draw Anime Eyes

Here’s a new tutorial on how to draw anime eyes! Use the structure of real eyes as references for your Manga-style designs – artist Raquel Arellano gives a rundown in text and video on variations in anime eyes and how to add of color to make them pop.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to draw anime-style eyes.

I will explain the different shapes and styles, how to apply basic colors, how some expressions work, and finally, how to draw anime-style eyes as a part of an illustration. You can also follow this step-by-step video tutorial :

Top And Bottom Lash Lines

I started with the basic model of the head. It’s not that realistic to show a perfectly symmetrical face, since we so rarely see people that way. So I made the head slightly turned. If you get in the habit of introducing asymmetry, your work will look more life-like.

So, first, I got the lower line based on where the circle representing the skull meets with the lower curved V line representing the jaw. This point, the top of your jaw, is the bottom of your ear. And your eyes are level with your ears. Then, you get to decide where to put the top lines. Drawing a line across makes the eyes come out at the same height, so they look proportionate to each other.

I drew the dark bottom and top lash lines. In manga style, the top line is longer, and they usually don’t connect. That’s the kind of eyes I’m drawing for this tutorial. However, if you want a connected eye or a specific eye shape, you can draw that shape at this step.

The purpose of this step is to define the boundaries of the shape of the eyes. I drew only a basic indication of the lashes, we’ll worry about lash details later.

What Was The Most Expensive Anime Ever Made

According to the Guinness World Records the most expensive Anime ever created had a budget of 20 Million US Dollars. You can find the official entry on the Guinness world records page here.

The Name of the Anime is Steamboy by Katsuhiro Otomos. It was released in 2004 and was over 10 years in development.

However, according to Wikipedia the Anime-Movie The Tale of the Princess Kaguya made by Studio Ghibli had a Budget of 49.3 Million US Dollars. With is more than double the Budget of Steamboy. You can find the Wikipedia article here.

So these are the two most expensive Animes I could personally find. But as you can see, the prices for creating high-quality Animations are very high!

Achieving Other Anime Features

How To Draw Anime Eyes Step By Step
  • 1Change your eye color with contacts. Large “circle lenses” can achieve a more dramatic effect than makeup, especially if colored with an unnatural color. Always get your eyes measured by an optometrist first, and purchase the contacts from a reliable source. Poorly made or poorly fitting contacts can cause serious eye damage.
  • For an especially dramatic effect, try “sclera lenses,” which cover almost the entire visible eye.
  • Always put on contacts before applying mascara.
  • 2Use a light lipstick or lip gloss. Dark or bold lipstick will make your lips appear fuller and larger, which will detract attention from your eyes. On many face types, over-accentuated lips and eyes together can be overwhelming or chaotic. Consider a light pink lipstick or clear gloss instead.
  • You can, however, make an exaggerated heart-shaped bow on top of your lips, if you are imitating an anime character with this feature.
  • 3Add a pink blush. The innocent look of most female anime characters can be reinforced with a light pink blush on the cheekbones. For a uniquely anime look, cross the blush over the bridge of the nose from cheekbone to cheekbone.
  • 4Alter the look with colored eyeliner. Brightly colored purple, blue, green, or other eyeliners can achieve an even less realistic look. You may wish to use this instead of black eyeliner if you are imitating cyberpunk anime, or other unusual styles.
  • Wiping a gluestick over your natural eyebrows will flatten them out to make this more convincing.

Is Anime Expensive To Make The Costs Of Making An Anime

When you look at an Anime you, most of the time, will probably think, that it isn´t as expensive as other Animations like 3D rendered Animations or very detailed other 2D Animations. And while that may be true it still isn´t cheap to make an Anime.

So how much does one Anime Episode cost to make? The average cost of a simple 60-second 2D Animation is around 6000 $. A whole Episode can cost between 100.000 $ to 300.000 $. So a 12 Episode long Season can cost up to 3.6 million US Dollars. And this is only the production and does not factor in the marketing costs!

Use A Light Gloss Or Lipstick

One thing that you should do is to go for a light gloss or a light lipstick. When you go for dark or bold lipstick, this can create problems as your lips will gain the attention that you need for your eyes. On some face types, over-accentuated lips and eyes can be quite chaotic. You need to consider pink lipstick or a clear gloss if you want your eyes to get attention.

    Sketching Male Anime Eyes

How to draw Anime eyes – 4 different styles [Voice-over Tutorial]
  • 1Sketch the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a horizontal line with a slight curve. Then, draw a line with a slight upward curve coming down off one end of the first line at a 45-degree angle. Make this line about 1/3 the length of the first line you drew. At this point, the upper lash line will have a C-shape, and youll be able to see the outer corner of the eye. To draw the lower lash line, draw a short, horizontal line with a slight curve centered under the upper lash line.XResearch source
  • Male anime eyes are usually smaller and narrower than female anime eyes. The curves on the upper and lower lash lines should be slight so the eye doesnt look too round.
  • Draw the eyes about 1/8th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if youre drawing one.
  • 2Draw an oval between the lash lines. Center the oval and make the top and bottom overlap with the lash lines so only part of the oval is visible. Make the width of the widest part of the oval about the same as the length of the lower lash line.XResearch source
  • This will be the iris.
  • 3Add a small circle near the top of the oval. Draw the circle on the left or right side of the oval, near the top. It doesnt matter which side, but place the circle on the same side in the second eye if you’re drawing one. Make the circle about 1/10th the size of the iris.XResearch source
  • Youll leave this circle white later on so it looks like light is reflecting off of the eye.
  • Leave the small circles you drew white.

How To Draw Anime Eyes Female

There are so many ways  to vary how you do your female manga or anime eyes. The shape of the eyeball in this drawing is an oval, instead of a circle.

The upper eyelid was drawn with more eyelashes. And there was an additional line added above that for the eyelid fold.

Also, the lower eyelid was drawn slightly away from the eyeball. The eye itself was drawn using four highlights, and green was used for the color. Again, three shades of green were used.

Notice how on this drawing, the highlights were outlined using a thin black marker. And the darker greens were added around the highlights.

There are many other variations as well. And as you practice drawing you anime eyes, youll start to develop your own style.

    Go For The False Eyelashes

In case you are unsatisfied with your current created look, you need to go for the best fake eyelashes. You can use demi lashes or you can cut the full length lashes shorter and cut them for a better experience. You can apply the lashes a little back. This way, you can create a larger eye.

In case you are uncomfortable with false lashes, you can go for the curling of your lashes. Now, curling your lashes can help you in a good way. You can still get a dramatic and full-length beautiful effect.

How To Draw Manga Eyes Eight Different Ways

While the video does not have a voice-over, it does have text from which you can follow the drawing process. What I like about the video is that the artist shows you step-by-step how to draw manga eyes.

You will get to see how the artist creates eight different manga eyes, and while we can debate whether there is enough variation to justify the eight different styles, its still cool to see the drawing process nevertheless.

The end results are amazing, though, and what is nice about the process is that you can see the coloring of the eyes too. Something that many art tutorials seem to lack.

    Drawing Female Anime Eyes

    How to Draw Anime Eyes
  • 1Draw the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a downward curving line for the upper lash line. Add a curved tail at one end , going down and back toward the other end of the line, so the upper lash line is C-shaped. Make the line about 1/3rd the length of the first curved line you drew. Then, make the upper lash line thick and bold with your pencil. For the lower lash line, draw a short, upward curving line centered under the first lash line you drew.XResearch source
  • Female anime eyes are usually bigger and rounder than male anime eyes.
  • Make the eyes about 1/6th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if youre drawing one. That way, theyll look big and exaggerated.
  • 2Sketch an oval between the lash lines. Make the top and bottom of the oval overlap with the lash lines so the top and bottom are hidden. Make the width at the widest part of the oval the same as the length of the lower lash line. This will be the iris of the eye.XResearch source
  • 3Draw a small circle near the top of the oval. Place the circle off to one side. Later on, youll leave this circle white, and it will look like light reflecting off of the eye.XResearch source
  • Make the circle about 1/10th the size of the oval.
  • It doesn’t matter which side you place the circle on, but it should be on the same side on both eyes if you’re drawing 2.
  • When youre done with your drawing, this circle will look like light reflecting off of the eye too.
  • Remember not to shade in the white circles.

Something very and manga eyes are the small circles added to represent light reflection and glare. These are typically drawn covering a portion of the pupil and iris, and are left uncolored.

Now you should be left with something that looks like an eye. Finish up by adding appropriate shading, and then add whatever color youd like to the iris.

But wait, theres something missing here. Eyebrows!

Since this is a female character, eyebrows are typically done by drawing a thicker arched line above the eye, contouring to the overall shape of the top lid. Again, here is where you as an artist get to be creative with the type of emotion you want to display. Depending on angle and thickness, you can portray various emotions. Play around with some positioning to see what works best for you.

    How To Color Anime Eyes

Here you can see the results from using different colors and blending modes. I used the Overlay mode for purple, Vivid Light for yellow, and Pin Light for the blue tones and the pink details. They blend great with the grey layer.

The key is to know where you want to place the grey gradients, the darker areas, and the highlights. Please go back to chapter 4. Styles and greyscale when in doubt.

Try different colors and see which ones are best for the effect youre trying to achieve. In this illustration, I chose two complimentary colors: purple and yellow with pink and blue tints.

    Grayscale coloring steps:

In 1, I simply started with the previously created grayscale drawing.

In steps 2 and 3, choose any color you fancy purple, with some blue in my case and try a blending mode that blends well with the greyscale.

In steps 4 and 5, I add some yellow using the Vivid light blending mode.

In step 6, I usually soften the dots a bit,  by using the eraser or decreasing the layer opacity.

Finally, in step 7, I just add the finishing touches to emphasize volumes and textures.

    Expressions For Anime Eyes

In real life and in the manga/anime world, eyes are one of the most important features to express emotion. Remember that a series of facial muscles tighten or relax, depending on the expression you want to achieve.Lets take a look at the eyelids, the inner eye, and the eyebrows.

The emotions intended in these examples are easy to understand.

In example 1, the eyebrow is a bit tense, but the eye is relaxed and shining. This conveys a worried state or maybe missing someone or something.

In example 2, the eyebrow is arched vertically, and the eye is closed, so we can deduce that the character is happy.

In the next example , there is no shine to the eye, the iris is completely white, and the pupil is reduced significantly. This shows that the character is aggressive. Note that the eyebrow is arched in the opposite direction of the happy one in example 2, which also signifies anger.

Let us check all these expressions to deduce their meaning: 4 is suspicion, 5 is worry, 6 is neutral or observing, 7 is shock, 8 is sadness, and 9 is shock or madness, depending on the situation.

    Female Anime Eye Specifics

Anime eyes are almost always drawn bigger and wider than real eyes. This is especially so for female characters who often have larger and wider eyes than their male counterparts.

One thing that really sets female anime eyes apart from male are more prominent eyelashes . This is not always the case but it does tend to be so.

For different styles of anime eyes you can check:

Highlights From At Least 2 Light Sources

Pin by Jen Hart on draw. (With images)

White or bright circles or ovals appearing in stylized anime eyes are representative of highlights on the surface of the eye.

Note here that usually one highlight is dominant and is depicted larger, and the second subordinate and depicted smaller. Neither appear as a bounce light or reflective light, rather, each is a highlight representative of another light source nearby.

Adoption rate: in many examples in anime. There are also many examples where only one highlight appears, or where a light is cast from multiple sources and many highlights appear.

If you are confused about terms describing how light interacts with a surface, or need a refresher on terms like bounce light or highlight, follow this link to an article I wrote on this topic, glossary of often-confusing art terms is at the bottom of that article).

The chart below indicates how in many examples, the smaller highlight is directly across the surface of the iris from the larger highlight, in some cases, it is placed across and down the surface of the iris.

Learn How To Draw Anime Eyes In 9 Simple Steps

In this tutorial, Ill show you how to draw anime eyes to help you build a solid foundation in manga art style. Drawing expressive and believable eyes for your anime or manga characters is essential in creating an authentic and appealing look.

Gather your tools whether its paper, pencils, and erasers, or digital tools like Procreate and an iPad Pro  and lets get drawing!

Before we start drawing anime eyes, we need to have a plan of action. This involves two stages of drawing: a rough stage and a clean-up stage. In the rough stage, we draw loose, messy, and free, building strong foundations on our paper.

    • All Levels

Learn How to Draw People and Character Designs Professionally, Drawing for Animation, Comics, Cartoons, Games and More! | By Scott Harris

In the clean-up stage, we focus on making the foundations look clean and professional. If youre working on paper, draw your rough stage as lightly as you can. If youre working digitally, use two layers within your art software, one for rough and one for clean-up. You can always lighten the rough layer using the opacity slider later.

Here we can see an elementary diagram showing the 3D form differences between a real eye based on a sphere and an anime eye which is essentially like a flat sticker.

Keep this flat structure in mind when drawing anime eyes from the side view of the character, where the shape effectively compresses.

How To Create An Anime Eye

So i’m learning how to sculpt using this 3d model as a reference:

I have the basic shape of the head, now i want to create the eyes for this character.I think the shape is a cylinder , but i don’t know how to create the eye itself.

So i tried using the knife project tool on a cylinder, but i don’t get the same results.

For me the shape is a cylinder because it doesn’t look like a sphere.

So how i can create the eye?

    • $\begingroup$another question i have if he is using a mirror modifier, or if it’s a sphere for both eyes? Also how does he bend the circle of the eye?$\endgroup$ fracedoAug 2 ’18 at 20:03
    • $\begingroup$cut sphere for both eyes. Mirror modifier simply copies the split sphere from 1 side to the other. bend circle of the eye?$\endgroup$ Noob SaibotAug 2 ’18 at 20:08
    • $\begingroup$So he is using two spheres one for each eye right? What i mean about the bending is that the circle that he use to texture the eyes follow the shape of the sphere, i don’t know how to create that circle. imgur.com/MH2eFkK$\endgroup$ fracedoAug 2 ’18 at 20:23
    • $\begingroup$yeah, pretty much. They are split though because if the whole sphere for the eye was visible, it would show through the head because its very large. You can split a duplicate of the sphere and scale down for the iris.$\endgroup$

How To Draw Male Anime Eyes

How to Draw Anime Boy Eyes [10 Ways] [No Timelapse]

The Eye we dre above looked more like a Female eye, but why? And how can you draw a Male Anime Eye?

What makes an eye look male? The answer is pretty easy. It is slimmer, more angular, doesn´t have big light reflections and the iris is smaller.

Here is the sketch of an Eye, I made, keeping the differences from above in mind.

Not let´s add some details but we are keeping the eyelashes to a minimum and the reflections are very small. The lines are also way more angular.

Only these very subtle differences made a huge difference. You can obviously push the differences more by making the eye even slimmer and the iris rounder and smaller. Or you could also make the eyebrow bushier.

First Of Is The Concept Phase

In this Phase, the Animators will draw concepts to the characters.

They will do little test Animations and work out how the characters move. Then they will start to conceptualize the backgrounds, lighting, and style of Animation.

In this phase, they will also settle on an overall mood and color to match the story. This phase is the most creative and also the one phase where most Projects just straight out die.
