Ever since he was a child, Takashi Natsume has been able to see yokai, an ability he inherited from his grandmother. The teenager also received something else from his grandparent: a book containing the names of different spirits. This gives the notepad’s owner authority over these yokai, making Natsume a target for all sorts of entities.

This premise seems made for a supernatural action series, but Natsume’s Book of Friends takes things in another direction. Rather than vicious battles, Natsume only wants to return each name, freeing the yokai from the book’s control. This journey is a generally peaceful one.

Shadows House Season 2

Shadows House is a difficult show to categorize. Season 1’s first few episodes paint a deceptive picture of a fantasy slice of life that follows the unusual everyday lives of Kate, a shadow, and Emilico, her living doll. However, after that point, the anime pivots its direction by introducing a horror-esque threat and then diving into the quite fantastic Debut arc. Firmly leaving behind any traces of its slice of life origins, Shadows House completed its transformation into a creepy mystery anime set within a fascinating society filled with intrigue and danger.

Season 2 has persisted down this road, dedicating time to exploring the shadows’ powers and the eponymous house’s hierarchy. Emilico and Kate’s relationship is one of the strongest of Summer 2022, and they are hardly Shadows House‘s only memorable characters. As the story reveals more about the house’s social structure and past, Kate’s goal to change things should continue to solidify. In the meantime, fans can look forward to charming character interactions and the occasional gripping fight sequence.

Cardcaptor Sakura : The Sealed Card

The most highly-rated movie on Crunchyroll is Cardcaptor Sakura: The Sealed Card that was released in Winter 2000. The story focuses on Sakura struggling with coming to terms with Syaoran’s confession, getting prepared for her school play, and capturing The Nothing Clow Card to stop it from making Tomoeda’s landmarks from disappearing. The movie is a must-watch for fans of the series and was at once considered the finale, but it’s still a pleasure to watch to this day.

The Princess And The Pilot

Japanese Title
Studio Madhouse

A clever combination of military war anime and light romance stories, The Princes and the Pilot might sound like a typical mismatched couple story, but itâs far more intricate than that. Mercenary Charles Karino is one of the best pilots in the kingdom a flying ace who faces discrimination in the kingdom over his mixed racial heritage. Charles finds himself in an interesting predicament when he is assigned the task of protecting the kingdomâs princess after her mansion is bombed by the enemy.

Itâs a real fairy tale of a story, but the aesthetic variations and intricate characters help it to stand out from the crowd. Those who appreciate either of its root genres will find something to love in this film.

If someone is craving a traditional harem anime, The Quintessential Quintuplets is arguably among the genre’s greatest representatives. The story sets up its key participants straight away as Futaro Uesugi accepts a job tutoring five sisters who are all struggling at school. Rather than instantly throwing out potential romances, The Quintessential Quintuplets devotes most of its early episodes to establishing each character as an individual with distinct dreams, quirks, and insecurities. Consequently, the story becomes about six people growing and maturing together rather than just a standard “who will win” dynamic, although the latter is still part of the experience.

The Quintessential Quintuplets is funny, heartwarming, and occasionally quite sad. While they do not get equal time with Futaro Uesugi, the sisters’ relationships with each other are also central to the narrative, allowing for each of them to shine regardless of whether they are genuine love interests.

Road To Ninja: Naruto The Movie

Japanese Title
Studio Studio Pierrot

Crunchyroll has quite a few Naruto movies, ranging from 2004’s forgettable Clash in the Land of Snow to 2014’s excellent The Last: Naruto the Movie. The latter is a contender for the best feature in the franchise, but 2012’s Road to Ninja just edges it out.

Most shonen spin-off anime movies tend to take a standard arc and squeeze it into a quick 90-minute sit, resulting in a fun but often inconsequential experience. Although not entirely an exception, Road to Ninja shakes things up by exploring a unique concept for the series: what if Naruto did not grow up as an orphan?

A Certain Magical Index The Movie: The Miracle Of Endymion

Japanese Title
Studio J.C.Staff

Kazuma Kamachi’s A Certain Magical Index light novels have been adapted into multiple anime seasons, to mixed results. In many ways, The Miracle of Endymion captures the strengths and weaknesses that define the series. On the one hand, the characters are lovable and the animation is good conversely, the plot is muddled and rushed.

Despite these criticisms, The Miracle of Endymion is a solid fanservice-heavy side story that builds up nicely towards a grand final act. This movie is unlikely to convert non-Index fans, but it should hit the mark for those who are already invested in Toma’s story and just want to spend more time with these characters. In the world of filler movies, this release is far from bad.
