Before emoji took over, we had the humble emoticon. Emoticons use keyboard characters to represent facial expressions and emotions, like the classic smiley, :-).
In the case of uwu, the u is supposed to represent eyes and w, the mouth. Learn Every Single Word Of Every Single Episode
This ones kind of a bummer, because it requires a lot of work, but if you want to understand , then you need to understand every word in that anime.
Maybe that sounds redundant, but I think that its something that I had a hard time accepting when I was still a beginner student of Japanese. I was more concerned about enjoying anime than I was about studying anime. As such, I had this lofty dream of magically understanding all of these rad shows just by toggling subtitles and immersing myself in Japanese.
Well, that didnt work so well.
Watching anime does not teach you Japanese. This has nothing to do with subtitle settings or amount of time watched or focus or any of that BS that I used to worry about when I sucked at Japanese.
For example, here are some English words:

Now tell me what each of those words means.
Difficult? Thats strange, because Im pretty sure were reading this article with English subtitles: On.
But none of us learn that way. Were not geniuses. Or, at least, Im certainly not a genius If I were, Id probably have a lot more money. .
The point is, you cant expect yourself to understand Japanese just because you hear or see Japanese words. Foreigners who spend decades in Japan without attaining fluency are a testament to this .
Luckily, there are programs available for splitting up the dialogue, audio, screenshots, and video clips of anime and putting them into flashcards so that we can study them and thereby learn them.

The Bad News About Studying Via Anime
I dont want to bring anyone down, since were talking about turning enjoyable anime into gross and disgusting studying, but I should warn all of you: Studying Japanese via anime is incredibly difficult for low-level students.
I love using my anime flashcards for improving my Japanese, but I already know 95% of the words showing up in those cards.
If you have a low vocabulary level, then this is going to be grueling work. However, maybe its grueling work that you can stick to over a long period of time which is, after all, the real secret to learning languages.
If you try to follow this method, but you find that its too difficult for you, then I recommend trying to increase your vocabulary as much as possible.
The fastest way to increase your comprehension in Japanese is to increase your vocabulary in Japanese.
I talk about this a bunch in the Hacking Japanese Supercourse, where I give a lot of advice on boosting vocabulary, but its also kind of just common sense.
If you keep learning new vocabulary, you will be able to understand more of what is pouring through your awesome, auto-generated flashcards. In other words, youll be able to enjoy your studies more and that means youll be able to study more hours per day and more days per week, which means that youll hit a point where studying Japanese becomes, in essence, effortless.

Ive written about onomatopoeia in the past, but focused mainly on animal and thing-related sounds. Today we are going to look at some of the sounds that humans make and how they are spelled. First of all take a look at this great infographic from Grammar.net and all the examples it has of onomatopoeia.

There are three examples of human sounds in the picture above: giggle, gurgle, and hiccup, but there are so many more examples of human-made onomatopoeia I want to share with you. Below is a more extensive list.

Cosplay In Western Countries
Western cosplay’s origins are based primarily in science fiction and fantasy fandoms. It is also more common for Western cosplayers to recreate characters from live-action series than it is for Japanese cosplayers. Western costumers also include subcultures of hobbyists who participate in Renaissance faires, live action role-playing games, and historical reenactments. Competition at science fiction conventions typically include the masquerade and hall costumes .
The increasing popularity of Japanese animation outside of Asia during the late 2000s led to an increase in American and other Western cosplayers who portray manga and anime characters. Anime conventions have become more numerous in the West in the previous decade, now competing with science fiction, comic book and historical conferences in attendance. At these gatherings, cosplayers, like their Japanese counterparts, meet to show off their work, be photographed, and compete in costume contests. A Few More Insults And Two You Probably Shouldnt Ever Use
Heres a few more insults that I wanted to share with you. No, no, no, WITH you. Not AT you. Whew!
The first one is which can be used for a few different things. The first is that it can be used to mean dammit kind of like that we saw earlier. But it can also be used to call some one a beast or brute if youd like.
Speaking of beasts, that brings us to the next one which is which means monster or goblin. You might hear this one more often in fantasy anime describing the actual monsters. But you also might get called a if you really piss someone off.
You might get called a , no not the food! But rather a coward if you always run away from trouble.
And you might get called which is the Japanese word for pervert. Now, if you like to watch anime and read manga, then youve probably come across the word hentai before as is also the name of a specific genre that is well lets just say its for adults only!!!
Fair Warning: Use These Next Two At Your Own Peril
The first one is and it means plain-looking, or ugly woman. Now, that might not sound so bad at first, but its actually one of the biggest insult that you could throw at a woman. Theres no friendliness with this one. Its just a straight out attack on a girls looks. Be careful as this insult sounds really close to the word which is an English loan word for bus.
The other one is which literally means vagina but is used the same way as the English word pussy. I find it a little ironic that they sometimes add the polite to it to change it to and make it more polite.
I dont know, man. I just dont know ¯\__/¯
I dont think that Ive ever actually heard Japanese people these last two words. But you might come across them sometime. Again, I would stronglysuggest that you avoid using these last two yourself.

What Language Does The Word Anime Come From
