Toei Animation’s Slam Dunk film will release later this year in Japan.

Toei Animation, the studio behind Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Slam Dunk, has confirmed that another Slam Dunk project is in the works. The studio will be creating a brand new Anime movie titled “The First Slam Dunk“.

Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk is a popular sports manga series that ran from October 1990 to June 1996, during this time, Inoue released 276 individual manga chapters that were collected into 31 volumes. With over 170 million copies sold, Slam Dunk is one of the best-selling manga series of all time. Toei Animation aired the Slam Dunk anime adaptation from October 1993 to March 1996.

Back in January of last year, the mangaka Takehiko Inoue announced that he is writing and directing the upcoming Slam Dunk anime film. Of course, it was exciting to hear that Inoue is deeply involved with the project however, the author or Toei didn’t reveal much about the film’s plot or cast. Also, fans have been eagerly waiting to see an official trailer for the film. Well, the wait is finally over as Toei Animation has released the first official PV teaser for The First Slam Dunk. The teaser gives fans their first look at Takenori Akagi, Hananichi Sakuragi, Kaede Rukawa, and Hisashi Mitsui.

Slam Dunk is an anime series adapted from the manga of the same title by Takehiko Inoue. The series tells the story of a teenager called Hanamichi Sakuragi who falls in love with a girl named Haruko Akagi, and decides to enter the Shohoku High School Basketball Team in order to attract her, as she is already in love with another Shohoku player, Kaede Rukawa. As Sakuragi starts learning how to play basketball, he begins to take a liking to the sport.

Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Nobutaka Nishizawa, the series aired on TV Asahi from October 16, 1993 to March 23, 1996. Toei compiled the episodes into a series of seventeen DVDs which were released in Japan from December 10, 2004 to May 21, 2005. Toei once again collected the series in three DVD boxes during 2008. All three boxes have a total of seventeen discs.

    The Japanese was written and illustrated by .     The series was originally published in ‘s since the issue 40 from 1990 until the issue 27 from 1996. The 276 individual chapters were originally collected in 31 editions under Shueisha’s Jump Comics imprint, with the first volume being published on February 8, 1991 and volume 31 on October 3, 1996.
