Drama is such a vague concept that hundreds of shows could theoretically slot into the category, however, is the definitive dramatic anime. Just to be clear, the show is not melodramatic or relentlessly sad in fact, it has its fair share of lighthearted moments. That said, the anime’s depiction of depression, bullying, and self-hatred is fantastic.

Rei is a young shogi player with a bright future, however, he is also socially awkward and tends to isolate himself from everyone around him. Over its two seasons, explores Rei on a psychological and emotional level, all the while introducing a myriad of nuanced characters who shape the protagonist’s development without sacrificing their own lives.

Only in Japan, was my first thought when I first saw The Qwaser of Stigmata. It has a unique concept, I love that someone was brave enough to come out with something like this.

Anime Shows That Take Fanservice To A New Level Of Stupid

Is fanservice a bad thing? The obvious answer is no. It has its own time and place for it.

But what about when its taken TOO far? Like when youre watching a meaningful series with a deep story, only for the anime to ruin the moment with pointless fanservice?

Whatever anime came to your mind when reading that sentence hold that thought.

Lets talk about a couple of anime shows I feel take fanservice to the extremes, when its not necessary.

Is This A Zombie

After being a victim of a serial killer, Ayumu has officially died but been brought back to life in no time too. As a surprise, the necromancer who killed him brought him back as a zombie and even though she was attacked by a mysterious girl holding a chainsaw in half. She came back as the magical zombie girl without actually dying.

The series is a mix of romance and ecchi themes mixed with a psychopathic story. This anime is for those only that can handle the necromancer of the show, as it might not be for everyone! Surprisingly, comedy is one of the genres of this show as well.

Only some of the decent guys can possess these particles, and Koichi is one of them. However, these particles need to be obtained by groping girls and using that to work the robot.

All of this is done to fight the penguin empire, which is basically a penguin-shaped robot trying to take on the world.

This series has a lot of romantic ecchi scenes where you will see several raunchy scenes. So for people who like this sort of series, watch Daimidaler!

Shinmai Maou No Testament

Watch Maken

Shinmai Maou no Testament is another amorous and overindulgent anime. Many people compare it to High School DxD, which is an honorable achievement in itself!

Its interesting to know that despite all the suggestive bits in Shinmai Maou no Testament, theres an actual driving force that moves its story and the development of its characters. Even without the fleshly parts, Id still watch this anime. But of course, were here for the fan service, right? Be at ease because this anime never runs out of hot juice!

If you want to maximize the tantalizing experience of watching Shinmai Maou no Testament, I suggest you find a copy without any censors.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime

Isekai has been around for a long time, but the concept truly became mainstream over the last decade. Nowadays, every season tends to have a couple of shows about people being whisked away to other worlds consequently, this subgenre has become oversaturated and overexposed. While there are plenty of underwhelming isekai stories out there, occasionally something like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime comes along that illustrates why this premise has so much potential.

Funnily enough, this show contains many of the common tropes that characterize isekai: an overpowered protagonist and a generic fantasy world influenced by MMOs. However, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slimebuilds beautifully on these foundations, crafting an uplifting story filled with action, comedy, and unforgettable characters. When Satoru passes away, he reawakens in a new world as a slime. Despite starting from the bottom, Satoru learns that he has the power to consume the skills of other monsters, and he quickly grows strong. Going by Rimuru, the protagonist sets out to start a kingdom for monsters.

Rampo Kitan: Game Of Laplace

Life was dull for Kobayashi until the day he was framed for his homeroom teachers murder. After an infamous high school detective clears his name, Kobayashi volunteers to become his assistant. But for every case they close, two more seem to open in its place. With cryptic clues leading the way, the pair find themselves following a trail of bodies that points to a killer known only as Twenty Faces.

In my mind, this is a pretty fantastic addition to the mystery genre of anime. The name of the series was inspired by the late, great Japanese mystery fiction author Tar Hirai, better known as Edogawa Ranpo/Rampo.

The main antagonist here, Twenty Faces, is themselves a play on Rampo’s own creation, The Fiend with Twenty Faces. The “gentleman thief” and “master of disguise” is a longtime adversary of the genius detective Akechi. What begins as an intriguing mystery soon spirals into something much grander and more complicated than the narrative can support, at times.

While it doesn’t quite stick the landing with a satisfying conclusion, this is still a solid mystery anime series with relatively few other-worldly elements thrown in for good measure. Fingers crossed for future seasons!

Legend Of The Galactic Heroes: The New Thesis

Caught in a 150-year-long war, interstellar nations reach the pinnacle of strategic combat at the hands of two genius leaders. Reinhard of the Galactic Empire, and Yang of the Free Planets Alliance lead the charge from opposing fronts. Fighting is their destiny, but in this vast universe torn by political intrigue, their greatest enemy may not be each other.

Though I’m not familiar with the original anime series this modern reboot is based on, “The New Thesis” definitely makes me want to check it out. It’s one of the most mature and thoughtful anime titles in FUNimation’s catalogue. Sure, there are other sci-fi military-themed action series out there, many of which put a focus on character development and extended dialogue scenes between officers, but Legend of the Galactic Heroes puts the emphasis on this rather than including it as an exception. So despite the rather generic title, this is one anime worth watching if you love to get into the nitty-gritty details of military strategy and how the human condition complicates it.

/15 4 Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion

Watch My First Girlfriend Is A Gal Sub & Dub

A popular anime from the ’90s, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is a science-fiction story set in a future where the superpower nation of Britannia has invaded and conquered Japan. The exiled former prince of Britannia operates under the name of Lelouch, and he leads a resistance movement against the people who took over his home, calling it the Black Knights.

The Black Knights frequently challenge the military of Britannia, with both sides using mechas called Knightmare Frames. And if the mecha action alone isn’t enough reason to give Code Geass a shot, the politics and character interactions will surely hook viewers enough to warrant a binge.

Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai

Japanese Title
Number of Episodes on Funimation 13

Do not judge a story by its title, a suggestion exemplified by Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. Based on Hajime Kamoshida’s light novels, this anime follows Sakuta Azusagawa, a teenager who tends to get dragged into supernatural-esque mysteries fueled by “Puberty Syndrome.” This essentially means that somebody’s insecurities begin to manifest in reality for instance, if someone believes that nobody sees them, they would start to disappear.

Split into short arcs centering around a different girl that Sakuta needs to assist, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai tackles themes and struggles that many people might be able to relate to. This is also not a harem, as the story’s beating heart is the relationship between Sakuta and Mai Sakurajima, the eponymous bunny girl.
