Howl’s Moving Castle – Official Trailer
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the book, Sophie is described as having reddish blonde hair, but in the anime film she has brown hair. At the end, even after getting her youth back, she still has gray hair, though Howl describes it as looking like starlight.
  • Howl constantly dyes his hair in the book, but is said to have “mud brown” colored hair. In the film, his natural hair color is apparently black.
  • Ms. Angorian and Mrs. Fairfax are totally left out, and Martha is combined with Lettie, by leaving out their deception. Ben Sullivan and Mrs. Pentstemmon are also totally left out, though aspects of both of them went into Madame Suleiman.
  • Gaston/Percival is also functionally left out, though a dog does show up at one point.
  • The explanation of why Sophie shifts back and forth at points was left out, rendering it confusing as to why this happens to her in the film.
  • Adaptational Nationality: The movie drops an entire subplot from the book about Howl’s origins, and makes him a native of Ingary.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Some of Howl’s more prevalent flaws in the books such as his womanizing behavior and chronic irresponsibility are omitted or downplayed. His anti-war attitude is original to the movie, as book Howl had no problem supplying the King of Ingary with magical devices for his troops, although no war actually occurs in the book.
  • : A lot of Miyazaki’s favorite staples were added to the film. Even one of his favourite actresses, Lauren Bacall, has a role in the dub.

Different: Fairy Tales Are A Bit More Of A Theme

In the original book, characters seem to be aware that they’re living in a fairy tale and assume the classic tropes applied to them, like the youngest child being the most successful, are true and set in stone. Sophie initially feels cheated by destiny, as she’s both the eldest daughter and her youngest sister is her stepmother’s daughter, meaning she’s destined to fulfill the role of a wicked stepsister. Of course, the course of the story shows that this isn’t necessarily true.

This is heavily downplayed in the anime adaptation, where the only hint that Sophie is a stepchild is that her mother and sister look more like each other than they do her. It doesn’t help that her sisters were conflated into a single character.

Why Are Ghibli Dubs So Good

But Ghibli’s primary creative force Hayao Miyazaki himself notably prefers dubbed versions of his movies, largely because removing subtitles allows viewers to focus on the art. … If you want to watch with subtitles, go ahead! They’re great, and the translations often preserve the spirit of the original writing.

In both versions of Howls Moving Castle, Sophie learns that Howl has given Calcifer his heart, which lets Calcifer survive, and lets Howl access Calcifers magic. And in both versions, this contract is taking a toll on Howl, and Sophie must figure out how to break it.

In the book, Howls curse comes in the form of a poem specifically John Donnes Song: Go and catch a falling star. Part of the fun is the play of the language and how the characters interpret the poem literally, trying to find mandrake roots and literally catching falling stars. Jones also plays with the poems meaning. The original context involves finding an honest woman, who then proves to be unfaithful. In the novel, it becomes clear that the dishonest figure is actually duplicitous Howl, who lies and makes up personas to get out of responsibilities. His arc is focused on shedding his hedonistic pursuits and becoming an honest man.

    Nausica: Valley Of The Wind

For fans of Howls Moving Castle, it is strongly recommended to watch other Studio Ghibli fantasy movies, especially Nausicaä: Valley of the Wind . The classic fantasy film, which is known as the early masterpiece of Hayao Miyazaki, was created in 1984 by an old animation studio Topcraft, the predecessor of Studio Ghibli. It is based on the original manga series written by him between 1982 and 1994.

Nausicaä: Valley of the Wind is set in the world where 1000 years pass after the war Seven Days of Fire. There is also a major conflict between a civilized human society and nature in the anime while Howls Moving Castle depicts the raging war. The large war results in poisonous forests hazardous to human beings.A 16-year-old girl Nausicaä, who is the princess of the Valley of the Wind, exerts herself to ensure coexistence with both humans and nature including the toxic forests.

    Description: Howl’s Moving Castle

Howl’s Moving Castle tells the story of Sophie, a young girl who lives in an era where Wizards and Witches co-exist and are fighting in the middle of a destructive war. Her life is changed one night when she is turned into an old woman by the Witch of the Waste.

She meets the mysterious and legendary wizard named Howl, who travels around in a giant crawling castle with his assistant Markl, a living scarecrow named Turnip Head and the fire demon Calcifer. She joins Howl in his journeys and attempts to find the way to undo the curse that was placed on her.

However, she discovers that nothing is as it seems and Sophie may not be the only one who needs saving….

The book and the movie differ in that there is no war going on at all in the book. This was most likely added to the anime to make it more exciting. In the book, Howl just happens to be a powerful wizard trying to get rid of the curse upon him and Calcifer that the Witch of the Waste made.

    The Symbolism And Themes

Miyazaki is known to not separate his personal opinions from his films, and HMC is no different. There is big anti-war sentiment in the film, and its not hard to side with Howl as he tries with all his might to avoid serving for his magical master in the ongoing war. He eventually stops running away, for the sake of Sophie. Although, its made clear that he despises the violence and hatred that comes with war. Though, the symbolism is not always alluding to ideas and opinions. The mystical and alluring moving castle is a not-so-subtle representation of Howl himself. A beautifully chaotic, disorganized yet enchanting beast. The magic portals that whisk the characters away with a turn of the doorknob also represent aspects of Howl. There is so much to learn about each of characters, and in places where you might not expect it.

    Rise Of The Guardians

Howl’s Moving Castle – Celebrate Studio Ghibli – Official Trailer

Director Peter Ramsey reinvents holiday fairytales with “Rise of the Guardians,” his 2012 directorial debut. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny they’re all fair game in this fun and colorful animated film, which is based on a series of books by William Joyce.

The Guardians are an Avengers-type group dedicated to protecting hope, dreams, wonder, and other important ideas. The group is comprised of North , a heavily tattooed Russian Santa Claus, Bunny , an Australian Easter bunny, Tooth , the humming-bird-like tooth fairy, and the Sandman, the mute guardian of Dreams. They enlist Jack Frost , a young winter spirit who’s a bit depressed that no one believes in him, to help them defend the world against the Nightmare King Pitch Black . Jack needs to find his place among the legendary creatures who recruit him, and build up his confidence to become his own myth.

The film is fast-paced, and while it’s first and foremost a children’s movie, anyone who’s grown up believing in these figures will enjoy the characters’ quirky reinventions.

Movies Like Howl’s Moving Castle That Are Definitely Worth Watching

Studio Ghibli and its founder and main director, Hayao Miyazaki, are known for producing whimsical animated films, and 2004’s “Howl’s Moving Castle” is one of their best. The film follows Sophie, a young hat maker who has a chance encounter with the wizard Howl, a mysterious and enchanting figure. This draws the attention of the Witch of the Waste, who fancies Howl. She curses Sophie, who turns into a 90-year-old crone.

Leaving everything behind to try and break the enchantment, Sophie tracks down Howl’s moving castle, which is literally a monstrous castle roaming the countryside on chicken-looking mechanical legs. Their adventures only get weirder from there. While Howl is a charming character, he is revealed to be very immature and selfish, and prone to mood swings and fits. Sophie has her own growing up to do, as she learns to assert herself and her boundaries vis-à-vis Howl’s unreasonable behavior. The kingdom where they are from is stuck in a meaningless war, which acts as a motivator to their respective coming-of-ages. The movie showcases Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki’s usual colorful and detailed animation, as well as intriguing characters and profound, serious themes.

Same: Howl’s Hair Keeps Changing Color

Anime is known for characters with unusual hair, whether it’s the color or the style. A viewer could be forgiven for thinking the film came up with Howl’s changing hair colors, an idea that seems somewhat redundant since Sophie goes through a similar issue.

But this also appeared in the original book. In both versions, Howl is described as blond when he first meets Sophie. Said to be naturally mud-colored, Sophie’s machinations accidentally cause Howl’s hair to become a pinkish ginger color, much to the wizard’s dismay.

Different: Howl Was From Wales In The Real World

As mentioned, likely as a reference to the titular Wizard of Oz, Howl isn’t originally from the fantasy land the story takes place in. In fact, he is ultimately revealed to be from real-world Wales in the 1970s.

Sophie notices the differences between the real world and her world, but takes the modern technology and customs in stride, clearly expecting unusual circumstances from the world Howl comes from. This idea was more or less dropped from the film version, though.

    Old Age And Compassion

    Howl

Miyazaki stated that an attractive aspect of the story of Howl’s Moving Castle was the relatively positive light it shed on growing old. When Sophie becomes old as a result of the witch’s spell, she also feels more able to speak her mind. According to Miyazaki, old women are only infrequently allowed to dominate the screen as in Howl’s Moving Castle, which made it a risky concept. Elizabeth Parsons stated that the film disrupts the stereotype of “aged unattractiveness,” when the artificially aged Sophie manages to rescue two attractive men and to unintentionally end the war in her country. Sophie’s actions are those usually associated with grandmothers, such as being kind and nurturing to those around her, and engaging in housework however, these actions are depicted as being powerful and heroic. Sophie is one of several strong female protagonists in Miyazaki’s films. According to Parsons, this gives the film a feminist aspect as well. Additionally, even though Sophie manages to make her presence in the castle legitimate by claiming to be a cleaning lady, the film goes on to show that the housework is equitably distributed, strengthening its feminist aspect.

Like with the other Studio Ghibli movies, the film was co-produced with other companies, which were Tokuma Shoten, the Nippon Television Network, Dentsu, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Mitsubishi and Toho.

    Flight And Critique Of Modernity

Like several other Miyazaki films,Howl’s Moving Castle reflects the director’s love of flying. Sequences in the film include both several aircraft of inventive design, as well as Howl transforming into a bird. Miyazaki examines flight as a theme most directly in the later film The Wind Rises. Miyazaki stated that he was attracted to military aircraft as a child, but that he grew to detest them because of the destructive purpose for which they are created. Thus Howl’s Moving Castle contains images both of aircraft shown as harmless and beautiful, and large military craft depicted as ugly and destructive. Cavallaro writes that Miyazaki wants to “portray flight as an object of admiration and awe,” but that he is not ” to its abuse by unscrupulous strategists and rulers.”

Same: Sophie Keeps Going Back And Forth With Her Curse

The Witch of the Waste curses Sophie into an old woman in both versions of the story, but she seems to occasionally regain her lost youth at random intervals. The circumstances are somewhat different between the book and its adaptation.

In the book, Sophie has supernatural powers herself and has been unknowingly affecting the curse. She is ultimately restored to normal at the end of the book, highlighted by her hair regaining its previous color. The film is much more ambiguous about how the curse works. For example, Sophie’s stepmother doesn’t seem to notice her stepdaughter has been aged decades overnight.
