Anime Expressions: Happy/excited And Content

Excitement, happiness, laughter are all interrelated emotions and represented very closely in Anime art. Laughter and general feeling of happiness is usually accompanied by an open mouth, closed eyes that follow the roundness of the eyebrows and some indicator of emotional spike on the cheeks usually a form of crosshatching is employed, or change of color to show blushing.

Happy and content feelings are similarly represented, mostly with the lips closed. Lips are drawn in an arc curving up communicating that the character is pleased or content.

One of the ways to draw a content or happy face when drawing Anime expressions is to create a careful half-smile with the lips closed, and draw the eyes open not too wide, as well as have the eyebrows follow the shape of the eye.

To show laughter or joy, we can further manipulate the facial features. Remember, we are working with the eyebrows, the eyes, the nose, the lips and the shape of the cheeks/jaw in orchestrating our emotions on Anime characters. In the example right above, the eyes are closet shut, the jaw is open and the nose stay stationary). The teeth are showing.

In the example above, a female character is drawn in a similar way: the eyes are closed, and the teeth are on display. Feelings of joy are largely expressed by the eyebrows and the corners of the mouth. Also, notice the tilt of the head, she is kicking her head back, as people often do when they are laughing or smiling.

Movement Of The Eye And Eyebrow

People often call the eyes the windows to the soul. It is true, eyes are extremely an expressive feature of the face. Just eyes by themselves can tell you if a person is smiling, scared, or angry! There are many groups of muscles surrounding the eye. The eyelids can be pulled wide to show whole the iris, or area around eyes can be contracted to squint eyes and create wrinkles. The eyebrows on their own have separate groups of muscles to pull the outer and inner ends that is why eyebrows can curve up and down and create a wave shape! Additional special muscles can pull both eyebrows together above the bridge of the nose.

Observe the image above. Those are just a few examples of possible eye expressions associated with emotions. J1, J2, and J3 show expressions of joy. The eyebrow is neutral or slightly pulled up. Most importantly, the outer eye corners are squinted and elevated by the cheeks when we smile. The squint makes a real difference between an honest or faked smile.

A1, A2, and A3 are expressions of anger or disgust. The muscles above the bridge of the nose do heavy work here. They pull the eyebrows down and together, creating many wrinkles between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose.

F1, F2, and F3 express shock and fear. This is the only expression when you want to show the full iris not overlapped by eyelids. Different eyebrow shapes make wide-open eyes express different emotions, from surprised to horrified.

How To Draw Sad Or Crying Faces

When drawing sad faces, I like to make sure that the eyebrows curve upwards.

For eyes, I like to show in some way that are tears in them, whether that be by adding tears to the edge of the eyes or making the eyes appear swirly.

As for the mouth, I like to draw them a bit uneven with a trembling hand to express that the mouth is quivering.

Its a bit difficult to explain in words so I have included down below some examples of how I draw sad faces.

Elements Of Expression In Drawing An Anime Face

#howtodrawanime, how to draw anime

Before we get into specific expressions and how to draw them, it is important to discuss exactly what we will be working with. When developing a new expression for your Anime characters, realize that you are working with specific elements. Here they are:

Neon Genesis Evangelion

This means as we evaluate expressions, pay attention to the eyes and the lips first. How were they drawn to express happiness, anger, sadness, excitement, surprise, and so on? Try identifying them separately. First, segment the features and look at them separately and also look at them in that order: eyes and lips, eyebrows, nose, then the silhouette of the face.

Further, when we set out to redraw some expressions, or design expressions of our own, try this approach of designing elements in a sequence:

  • first, have a plan for the expression you want to draw. The faces drawn with the least intent, end up with the most ambiguous results regarding expressions. Try writing down what expression you are drawing next to the drawing first.
  • Start with the design of the eyes and lips
  • Identify the design of the eyebrows that will best fit the eye design already in place
  • Check to see if nose and silhouette of the head will be impacted with the design you created, if so, draw it as such.

How To Draw Happy Smiling Faces

Eyes on happy faces can be draw open or winking.

Add a little sparkle or more light in the eyes to express more joy or excitement.

Eyebrows can be drawn raised, arched/straight unless the character is grinning. For grinning faces, the eyebrows will slant downwards.

I also like to add blush lines to happy faces.

Mouths can be drawn so many different ways, so I have included examples below of several happy, smiling faces to draw.

Drawing A Relaxed Male Side View Face

For a relaxed face draw the eyebrow in its natural state with the eye closed. Draw the mouth slightly shorter and with almost no curve.

Its important to note that for the closed/relaxed state of the eye you should draw it all the way down to where the bottom eyelid was when it was open.

In this particular example you can see that the main change in this expression is the eye.

Male And Female Anime Faces

How to Draw a Face! 2 Anime, Manga Expressions! Fun2draw | Online Anime Manga Tutorials

Although manga style faces are pretty feminine to begin with, there are certain ways to make the face look more masculine:

  • The eyebrows are placed low above the eyes.
  • The eyebrows may be thicker and less curved.
  • The eyes are narrower.
  • The eyelashes are minimal and less prominent.
  • The pupil is small and circular.
  • The lips are even less pronounced.
  • The jawline is more pronounced.
  • The neck is thicker.
  • The nose is more pronounced.

Of course, not all of these methods must be applied. Sometimes, the sex difference is shown only by the clothes and the hairstyle!

Drawing Anime Mouth Mouth Partially Open

different facial expressions, pink background, drawing ...

There are certain instances that show up very often in anime and manga, where the character is speaking, or smiling or showing distaste in a situation, and the characters mouth is half-open. A similar drawing of a mouth is used in all of these varying situations.

In these instances, artists can show lots of emotion through the corners of the mouth, but no teeth are visible at all.

In the above examples, the dip created by the area between the lower lip and the chin is indicated by a single mark. If you place your index finger on your lower lip, and slide it down slowly to your chin, halfway through you will notice that your finger moves inward before moving outward towards the end of the chin. This dip in anatomy is represented here with one mark.

Try to study from the examples below,;and try to identify what kind of character this expression could belong to. Can you draw in the rest of the face of the character just by looking at the mouth drawing? This could be a good exercise in invention of facial features.

In the example above, lets identify the tilt of the head and location of the mouth. In the example on the right, we can see that the head is tilted slightly to the left. We can infer this just from the drawing of the mouth.

It also appears that indication mark for the dip above the chin is more prevalent in male than female anime characters. The male faces seem to be represented to be more angular, providing the mark indicating the dip shows a change in the plane.

How to Draw Manga Facial Expressions (Joy, Embarrassment)

Anime has a very distinguishable style. When drawing anime, there are a few rules to follow. Most importantly, the exaggerated features:

  • Eyes. The eyes are always large and take up almost half of the characters face. Whats more, they usually contain black circles in the middle with coloured outside rings. The colours can also be exaggerated, some eyes, for example, can be purple.
  • Hair. The anime hair is usually in a very strange, unnatural shape. The characters hairstyles are always exaggerated and, once again, the colours can vastly vary.
  • Facial expressions. Facial expressions are conveyed in an interesting way. For example, teardrops in the eyes is a sign of embarrassment. Facial expressions are strongly exaggerated, making the characters very expressive.

How To Draw A Happy Face

To draw a happy face, focus on the upward curve of the mouth and eyes.;

Step 1: The Mouth

When we smile, the corners of the mouth and the line between the lips turn upward, so this is the first step when drawing faces with a happy expression. You can then add the lips and decide whether you prefer a closed mouth for a subtle and peaceful smile, or if you want to make a more expressive smile by drawing the mouth slightly open.;

When drawing a happy face you can start with the smile, as it is the main focal point of this facial expression.

Step 2: The Eyes

When we smile, the cheekbones go upward, making the eyes squint slightly . Do this in your drawing by making the lower lids arch up a little and adding wrinkles in the outer corner of the eyes to emphasize the gesture. The top lid will generally cover more of the iris than the bottom eyelid.;

To draw smiling eyes, make the lower lid arch slightly upward.

Step 3: The Nose and Cheekbones

Sometimes smiling makes your nose scrunch up. Emphasize the outlines of the nostrils and make the septum curve go downward slightly. For the apple of the cheek, add lines from the corner of the nose toward the corner of the mouth, but avoid joining them if you dont want your character to look older.;

Step 4: Eyebrows and Details

Practicing how to draw mouth expressions can help you depict a wide range of smiles and intensity of emotions.;
