Analyzing The Proportions Of The Hand
Study the proportions of the fingers.
The fingers and the palm of the hand should be roughly the same length. The tip of the thumb if drawn at a 45 degree angle to the hand should reach to just slightly below the knuckle bone of the index finger.
The fingers consist of 3 parts with the distance from the tip of the fingers to the top joint being the shortest and the distance from the knuckles to the bottom join being the longest.
Always Use A Reference
Its important to use reference images, no matter your illustration skill level. Whether you look at a photo, take pictures of your own hand, or ask a friend to model different hand gestures, have a guide at your side. There will always be something unexpected and different, even if youve drawn them a million times, says Daviscourt.
Drawing Anime Hands Start With A General Shape Work General To Specific
In both method we will cover below to draw anime hands, the glove/mitten method and the simple form construction method, we will start with a very basic shape for the palm of the hand.
It is a boxy and concave shape. Check the diagram above, then try to make different hand gestures and observe your own hands as well, and observe how this shape changes from one gesture to the next.

Differences Between Male And Female Hands And Fingers
Hand styles are affected greatly by gender and age. Considering these factors can make a difference to the hand. The example above shows the difference between a male and female hand.
The distinction between male and female hands can be found in the manner of how it is being drawn. Since both hands have the same constructions method, outlining the hand properly can tell whether a hand belongs to a male or female.
Looking at the illustration above, compare the two hands. On the left, it is most likely to be feminine and belongs to a female. One thing to notice is how the outline forms the hand. On females hand, its quite smaller, fingers thinner pointed, and nails longer. The manner of outlining the female hand is smoother and with less or without too much cornered edges as compared to a male hand. These are some characteristics of a female hand.
Of all the feminine aspects of the female hand, male hands are completely the opposite. The outline has many cornered edges, showing the prominent muscles in the hand . This is most obvious on adult male hands. Some features of male hands include wider fingers, compared to females shorter and not pointed fingernails. Also, on male hands, veins are more likely to be exposed.
Observe and try to experiment on these fingers. Notice the differences between the two, from the shape of the fingers to the fingernails.

Drawing Hands And Fingers
Step 1 ; Start by drawing a vertical rectangle and divide it into 2 equal division horizontally.
Step 2; ; ; Next is to draw a vertical line for the middle finger.
Step 3 ; Having the middle finger as a guideline, create more slightly slanting vertical line for the rest of the fingers. It is always good to look at your own hand as a reference. Try to observe the height or length differences of each finger, the middle are most likely to be longer of all five fingers.
When constructing, it is always better to think square. This helps massing out the guidelines more easier.
Make use of the guidelines as you begin to form the actual hand structure. See the pictures above for reference. Try to observe your own fingers and see how each fingers may vary in size and width. The thumb is the thickest while the pinky is the thinnest.

Finish The Reaching Hand Drawing
To finish the drawing you can add the various lines and wrinkles around along the palm and fingers and go over your drawing with darker lines.
As mentioned the wrinkles will generally be around the joints of the fingers. The two lines in the upper part of the palm are usually around the same area as the knuckles . One mistake beginner artists tend to make is drawing the fingers bending directly from the top of the palm when they actually bend from around these two lines.

Comic book artist Megan Levens uses a six-step process for hand drawing, starting with basic bone structure and building up to details like fingernails and shading.

Step 1: Start with bone structure.
Your first layer should be the bones of the hand, the carpals. Dont worry about making it pretty; this step is about laying the foundation for an anatomically correct hand. Just as the bones are the framework of the body, bones will also be the framework of your drawing. Each finger radiates out at a different angle, notes Levens. They shouldnt all point straight ahead together. Daviscourt also recommends starting from the wrist at this step because the wrist is where the lines of the hand start to intersect visually.
To make your hands look realistic, consider the height differences between your fingers. The middle finger should be the tallest, with the ring finger and index finger on the downward slope of the arch, and the little finger finishing out the line. The thumb is an outlier from the rest and should sit farther apart from the others.

How To Create Anime Hands And Characters

The hands of an anime character won’t seem essential; however, you and your pals will discover if you aren’t getting them right. Anime characters use their arms to communicate expressively and fight viciously. Studying how to draw anime hands can be troublesome, even when the remainder of your Japanese cartoon hero is drawn perfectly. The arms particularly require special attention. The first step in creating an anime hand is to attract the palm and basic construction of the fingers. To begin, draw an upside-down bell. Draw The Fingers & Thumb

The parts of the fingers from the knuckles to the first joint are fairly simple. Draw these fanning out from the hand similar to the previous examples. The next set of sections up from that is facing the viewer at a very sharp angle making them appear very short or almost invisible. You will need to take this into account when drawing if you want to create a believable pose. From there to the tips each section are pretty much fully visible. Draw the tip of the thumb and index finger pointing slightly more inwards than the first set of sections. You can draw the other two fingers at pretty much same angles as their knuckles to first join parts.

Make Outlines Around The Hand
Make an outline around the structure. Increase the fat between each finger joint for chubby looking hands or decrease the fat while making the joints stick out for a skinnier hand. Humans have some webbing in between each finger, so make sure you connect each finger with webs. Make sure they are not too low. They should be;well above the knuckles drawn in step 2. Now that we understand the proportions and how to construct a basic hand, lets practice drawing different hand gestures.
Lets Draw Some Details And Ink In The Outline
For cartoonish clenched fists, we tend to round out the shapes of the fingers more and exaggerate the length of fingers and thumb.
We also show less detail than a realistic clenched fist.
Flesh out how your fist looks. Because its not realistic, you can take some creative liberties here and add a little flare, maybe making it look like you just broke someones nose or knuckles!
For this drawing, I am keeping the fist looking simple.
I am grabbing my favorite marker which is a Posca paint pen and I am drawing the outline of the hand and some simple lines to denote the knuckles.
I now grab another marker I am using a Copic marker as it can apply a nice even color or shading without marker lines and I am marking out the shadows as per below.
Notice how the shadows for the right side and thumb are darker than the back of the hand and in between the fingers and also the shadow on the left side of the fist.
I then use an eraser and remove the pencil lines so all that I can see are the marker lines of my clenched fist cartoon style!

Draw Some Simple Shapes To Define Fingers And Knuckles
Lets add some simple shapes to the box we drew in step one.
This will help us work out how thick our fingers and knuckles should be as well as showing how long each finger is relative to its width.
Here we will also define where the thumb will go, notice where the tip of the thumb ends as most people have thumbs that do not go past the first pointy finger.
Also add a rough line for the palm lines and where the wrist will start. Sketch in a small wrist as well.
Drawing Anime Hands Joint Divisions
We looked at the phalanges in the skeletal structure of the hand;at the beginning of this tutorial. The phalanges define the separations or the joints between different parts of fingers.
Note that each finger has three joints, one starting at the knuckles and two more down the length of the finger. Indicating these joints in the correct place will provide solid structure to your drawing of anime hands.

Way To Draw A Hand Holding Something
Step 1 First step is quite simple, we will start by drawing an outline looking similar to our fist.
Step 2 Draw 5 lines for the fingers, the distance should be equal and the line for the thumb will be;different as shown. Draw small circles to mark the joints.
Step 3 Now we will draw the fingers using the outlines made in the earlier step, and bend the fingers at 2nd circle to mark that we are holding something. Keep in mind to draw some lines the palm also.
Step 4 Remove the outlines and darken the actual lines. Now draw the object above and below the hand to make it look that it is being held.
Step 5 Wow, it looks amazing. Now you can color appropriately or follow the colors we have used.

Finish The Casting Hand Drawing
Add the lines along the palm and the smaller wrinkles along the fingers and thumb. Keep in mind that as the thumb is pulled back some of the wrinkles on it will be smoothed out. To emphasize this you can even leave out some of the wrinkles that would naturally still be visible.
Once you finish adding all of the smaller details of the hand you can go over your drawing with darker more solid lines.
Drawing Fingernails With Nail Polish
For painted nails you would generally want to first draw long nails and then simply fill them with the appropriate color. One thing you may want to do though is leave a tiny highlight inside each nail. This will make them appear shiny .
If you want to draw the anime/manga style nails with the open inner ends you can still fill the shapes of the nails with color but leave the gaps in the outlines.
