Enjoy Anime The Same Day That It Airs In Japan

Are Fans Hurting Simulcast Anime?

Anime fans have a way to watch Japanese anime at the exact same time that its aired in Japan. Instead of waiting months for a new series to be released to DVD, you can get your anime fix by keeping up with a new episode every week via a streaming site. These weekly episodes are known as simultaneous broadcasts, shortened to simulcasts because they allow fans to watch anime online as it happens. In addition to the simulcast, Funimation offers the SimulDub. What is that? Read on!

Crunchyroll Vs Funimation: Comparison Of Dubs

While anime cant teach you the way actual Japanese people speak, it can be a good way to practice and pick up phrases if you are interested in learning the language. But for those who like their anime dubbed, Funimation is the clear winner.

Crunchyroll might have some dubs and voiceovers, but this is only for a specific list of works with Blue Exorcist, Durarara!! and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is among the most well-known ones.

In their FAQ page on November 2020 they did mention that theyre working on providing more dubs soon, but the majority of their works are still in Japanese with English subtitles.

Funimation, on the other hand, specializes in dubs. Their library includes hundreds of anime titles with an English voiceover which are often available very promptly after the release of an anime episode. As is the case with most creative industries, Covid has slowed down their dubbing activities somewhat, by they remain the go-to for those who want to watch anime in English as soon as they come out.

Simulcasting To Provide Stereo Sound For Tv Broadcasts

Before stereo TV sound transmission was possible, simulcasting on TV and radio was a method of effectively transmitting “stereo” sound to music TV broadcasts. The band Grateful Dead and their concert “Great Canadian Train Ride” in 1970 was the first TV broadcast of a live concert with FM simulcast. In the 1970s WPXI in Pittsburgh broadcast a live Boz Scaggs performance which had the audio simultaneously broadcast on two FM radio stations to create a quadrophonic sound, the first of its kind. The first such transmission in the United Kingdom was on 14 November 1972, when the BBC broadcast a live classical concert from the Royal Albert Hall on both BBC2 and Radio 3. The first pop/rock simulcast was almost two years later, a recording of Van Morrison‘s London Rainbow Concert simultaneously on BBC2 TV and Radio 2 on 27 May 1974.

The first CABLE TV concert simulcast was Frank Zappa‘s Halloween show , live from NYC’s Palladium and shown on MTV with the audio-only portion simulcast over FM’s new “Starfleet Radio” network. Engineered by Mark G. Pinske with the UMRK mobile recording truck. A later, notable application for simulcasting in this context was the Live Aid telethon concert that was broadcast around the world on July 13, 1985. Most destinations where this concert was broadcast had the concert simulcast by at least one TV network and at least one of the local FM stations.

Winter 2021 Anime Simulcast Guide

There may be “simulcast” and “uncut” versions, in either language, depending on license availability. Simulcast is the visual version broadcast over the air in Japan and may have censored scenes, and/or artwork that was somewhat inferior and rushed to meet the broadcast schedule. Uncut is the version released on disk/blu-ray, so it will be un censored, and/or have somewhat more refined and cleaned up artwork. In a lot of cases unless you went frame by frame, you’ll probably never notice, but in the case of some mature titles, the differences will be less obscured from view.

Experience Anime Your Way

Not every fan likes anime for the same reasons, and theres no wrong way to enjoy anime. Shows with English audio give English audiences a different experience than watching the same show with Japanese audio. Neither is better or worse than the other, just different. Subtitles arent going anywhere in the anime industry. Some fans will always be sub fans, and thats just a matter of preference. However, to bring anime to a wider audience, we want to be able to create an experience for the fans who want to get lost in the artwork and story without reading subtitles.

Whats The Future Of Anime Streaming

The biggest change going forward in streaming isnt going to be in the services, but in how they license shows. Or, rather, how these companies invest in shows.

Historically, companies looking to stream or release a home video version of a series outside Japan had to acquire a license from the shows production committee. These production committees are companies created just for the show and made up of all of its stakeholders. Those stakeholders include not just the animation studio in charge of production, but could also include the channel / service that will air the show, the toy companies thatll produce the shows merchandise, music companies that might acquire or make the songs for the opening and ending themes, book publishing companies if the show is based on an existing novel or manga, etc.

Streaming services arent licensing shows anymore, they are investing in them

This sort of internal corporate synergy is likely going to become the norm, which will stratify shows in much the same way as the rest of the streaming wars: exclusives on Disney+, Warner Bros. content only being on HBO Max, and so on. This could lead to more competition and investment in the shows companies license, which in turn could hopefully improve the pay and working conditions of animators and other production staff who are already overworked and underpaid. For consumers, there is more easily accessible anime being made than ever before but only if you have the money.

What Can Simulcast Mean

The term simulcast was first recorded around the middle of the 20th century. At this time, most of the world either had terrestrial television or was in the process of getting it. Simulcast is a portmanteau of the words simultaneous and broadcast, and thats exactly what it means a simultaneous broadcast if its used as a noun, or to broadcast simultaneously if its used as a verb.

What makes the word tricky is that you can use it to describe a few different processes. For example, you can say a signal is simulcast if you broadcast it from multiple towers at the same time, in order to get wider coverage. The number of channels youre broadcasting to stays the same.

Then theres simulcasting when you broadcast a regular program with an additional audio channel, via secondary audio programming, or SAP. In these cases, viewers can pick one of two audio tracks to have over their video. The broadcaster creates two audio channels with content in two different languages and lets the audience decide which one to listen to. In the United States, this way of simulcasting is mostly used to broadcast English- and Spanish-language audio tracks at the same time.

Someone who live streams video content on websites like Twitch, , , or might be familiar with the term multistreaming. It means streaming to more than one of these platforms, websites, or networks at the same time. Its the simulcasting of the live streaming world.

What About Viewers Who Prefer To Hear The Original Whenever Possible If You Hardly Ever Use Dubs And Prefer The Original Japanese Note That Theres A Difference In The Way Crunchyroll And Funimation Display The English Translated Text: While Crunchyroll Uses Normal Subtitles Without The Background That Are Customizable And Generally Not Distracting Funimation Uses Closed Captions Instead

Those who use the Funimation app might be particularly irritated about this, since the captions’ distracting, dark background cant be removed within the app. Visuals are very important in anime, so being unable to see a stripe of the screen due to a dark background can be annoying.

    Winner of the round: Crunchyroll

    Crunchyroll Vs Funimation: Catalog

Depending on what youre looking for, both Funimation and Crunchyroll have a good variety of anime, with some exclusives. But some might argue that when it comes to the streaming services catalogs, Funimations focus on dubs might work against them. After all, Crunchyroll boasts over 1200 shows, while Funimation has much less.

Another major difference is that Crunchyroll isnt limited to anime. They have a range of live-action TV shows such as the Death Note live-action, as well as J-dramas.

Of course, Funimation doesnt leave live-action fans entirely without options and it is still a good place to watch classic anime such as Cowboy Bebop, given that Crunchyroll tends to focus on newer, trendier titles. Moreover, Funimation tends to have more information about each of their anime, which is a nice perk.

Still, in many spaces where anime fans discuss and exchange opinions, such as Reddit, Crunchyroll is often listed as the preferred streaming service due to its diverse and abundant content. Besides, Crunchyroll also has a manga and apparel store, making it the ideal place for fans of Japanese culture as long as they dont need dubs, so it definitely wins this round.

    Winer of the round: Crunchyroll

Why Should You Sub to Funimation? Simulcast and Simuldub

In the beginning, English-dubbed anime would take close to 12-months to complete. Now, we have an integrated studio running 18 hours a day throughout the year working to create the best English dubs in the world. We schedule recordings in packed clusters so we can cut down the number of days spent recording, but keep the amount of hours the actors have in the booth the same. What used to take a full year, now only takes 10-20 days which has allowed a crazy growth in volume. Our SimulDub seasons used to support 2 shows, but now we have closer to 20 in the lineup!
