How To Shade Anime Hair Step By Step

This tutorial teaches the basics of anime and manga style hair shading with step by step examples of twelve different hairstyles.

Above you can see a preview of the different hairstyles shown in this tutorial. Even if you are only interested in some of them it may be a good idea to read over the entire tutorial as certain hairstyles have more detailed explanations on shading particular parts of the hair. Its set up this way to avoid some repetition.

Adding Highlights And Finishing Touches

Finally, lets add highlights. Highlights are essential, as they give eyes a spark of life.

You can also remove highlights to imply a lack of energy.

When adding highlights, add a new layer above the line art. By drawing a highlight over the line art, the entire eye will have more depth.

This time, I added highlights to the top left.

Thats it!

Highlights change depending on the direction of the light in the scene and direction the character is facing. Try out a few angles to see what angle works best for you.

Infuse Nib With Mixing Chamber And Blend Towards Darkest Areas

  • Infuse nib with the Mixing Chamber for around 5 seconds
  • Blend towards the shadows
  • Slow, smooth technique for natural blending

The next step is to begin blending the colors and for that, you’re going to need to use the Mixing Chamber to dilute the color. It all depends on which area of the skin you’re focusing on first. In this example, you’re going to want to fuse the;Sand tone in the Mixing Chamber for around three seconds and color towards his nose while shading towards the top of his head.

To color this section, you need to focus on short strokes rather than long. This is because each area of Aang’s face is going to be different and a different color will be used. By using short strokes, you’re able to focus on a particular area to perfect it. By using longer strokes, you might end up using a color on an area of the skin which isn’t supposed to be there or which doesn’t look realistic.

Short, side-to-side strokes will help achieve the realism. Don’t rush it.

It’s important to note that each part of the skin you’re coloring is going to need a different infusion time when placing the nib in the Mixing Chamber. For example, Emma’s work on Aang’s nose might need a longer fuse time;than the other areas;because you don’t want it overly dark.

You wouldn’t need to go above this ideally, as most of the colors in the Skin Tones pack are already quite light. This way,;you’ll be getting a seamless and consistent color flow between both light and dark tones.

How Anime Hair Is Draw

Anime hair is generally drawn in large clumps with a lot of it based on real hairstyles.

When drawing hair it can be helpful to break it down into the front, sides, and back/top sections as shown in the red, green and blue above. This is also how to hair will be broken down in this tutorial.

For examples like the one above of all of the hairstyle used in this tutorial as well as general instructions on drawing anime hair see:

Begin Adding The Pigmentation Colors

  • Go back to add more depth

See the difference? Once the blending is complete, go back and add little bits here and there that you think need adding to make the skin have depth. The picture below shows a much clearer take on the different colors used on the skin.

Look at the subtle pink-ish brown tones around his eyes and his nose. Along with uses of brown inside of the ear. They’re not typically the colors you’d associate with creating realistic skin but it’s clear to see that it works.;

Even if you think you don’t need it, subtly adding it makes the skin look more realistic and natural, as opposed to just using one color gradient. The use of yellow underneath his eyes also makes them look more real compared to when Emma first started. She’s even made it look like he has freckles, all with just five pens!

It’s a lot to take in and it might be difficult keeping up with just images. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Watch a timelapse below of the talented Emma Watson showing you how she went about making the skin tone on Aang looking as impressive as it does. No magic involved. Just five Chameleon Pens!;Check out Emma’s Instagram here.

How Anime Hair Is Shaded

BASIC SKIN COLORING TUTORIAL – CLEAN ANIME STYLE

Generally anime and manga hair is shaded without gradients and has hard transition between its light and dark areas. This makes the shading process much faster but at the same time a little tricky as it can be difficult to figure out where the boundary between light and dark should be placed.

Where the actual shading is placed depends on the lighting conditions the artist wishes to show.

Anime characters are generally shaded in two ways:

  • Generalized shading where there character or object are well lit from most sides
  • Shading with strong one directional light source
  • This particular tutorial will focus on the more generic shading as its very common and can be used in most scenes. Please note however that even in the well lit lighting setup the strongest light will generally comes from somewhere above . This means that shadows will tend to form towards the bottom parts of the hair.

Dont however confuse this with a one directional light source form above which would be more like shining a flashlight down on someone in a dark room.

For examples of shading in one directional lighting see:

Finally also keep in mind that anime/manga style shading does not need to be perfectly accurate or overly realistic. The goal is to have just enough basis in reality so that it looks believable.

    Laying Down Base Colors

Using fill tools, fill in the inside of the eye.

As this is just the base, dont worry about shades. Focus on making sure that there are no gaps between the line art and the fill color. Use the eraser tool if the paint goes outside the line, and use the pen tool if there are small gaps.

Once youre done, go to the next step.

    Put Highlights On The Skin

Once you’ve painted some shadows, it’s time to add some highlights.

The place to put the highlight is the part with the bulge such as the forehead and cheek.

Let’s put a light skin color on such places.

I think this order is similar to makeup.

It may be easy to apply skin color if you first apply the base and then imagine the foundation.

The recommended brushes for painting are airbrushes and watercolor brushes.

You can use those brushes to create soft shades.

    Choose The Right Paper

Even though Ohuhu provide you with a blank swatch for your colors, I like making my own larger swatch on the paper Ill be using. In this case, Ive created a swatch on the Ohuhu Spiral-Bound Marker Pad. These pads are bleed-proof and acid-free, so they work well with these markers without bleeding through. Whenever youre using alcohol-based markers, its best to use bleed-proof paper because regular paper will absorb more of the marker, making it harder to blend your colors, using more of your ink, and leaving you with a bigger chance of ink leaking through the page or bleeding out the lines.

The Ohuhu marker pads come in various sizes and include a plastic bleedproof sheet to stop any bleeding behind the page, although I didnt have any issues with markers bleeding through anyway. Its a nice safety net though!

When it comes to the actual coloring pages, I wanted to be able to print my line art first, so Im using X-Press It Blending Card I purchased from Amazon a while ago. Depending on your printer, you may be able to tear out the Ohuhu marker pads with the perforated edges and print on them. There are other bleed-proof paper alternative that might also work for you. Either way, I recommend paper thats intended for alcohol markers instead of regular printer paper, for the reasons I mentioned above.

How To Color An Anime Character Step By Step

This beginner friendly tutorial explains how to color a character in the anime style with detailed step by step examples and explanations.

The coloring style used in anime is known as Cel Shading. Cel shading is a technique generally used in animations and manga/comic book style art as well as 3d renderings where there are no gradients used between the shaded and normal areas.

To keep this tutorial beginner friendly it will focus on applying the bare minimum shading generally used in anime in most normal lighting conditions.

You can also apply the tips in this tutorial to drawing other anime characters. You can simply add more steps if you want to color a more complex character.

For help with picking a color combination for your character you can see:

Color Lighter Areas Of The Skin With A Different Tone

    • Pick a lighter skin tone to add dimension
    • Color away from the darkest areas to ease blending

After finishing the darkest areas, Emma has quickly moved on to the rest of Aang’s face as he waits patiently to come to life. You don’t need to think about infusing the nib with the Mixing Chamber just yet – I know, that’s the best part – and forget about blending techniques for a moment.

Instead, look around at the rest of the areas of the skin. Other than the darkest areas, the skin is still the color of the paper. So, Emma has gone with the;Nude and Sand pens to add more dimension to the face. This is a pretty easy part, as you already have the visual goal of which are the darkest areas. So, you know where to hit the blend when it comes time to do that.

Start at the lightest areas and color towards the darkest areas. That way, you’ll be adding the midtones and make your job of blending much easier. If you have a much bigger gap between the lightest and darkest color, the blending might not look as smooth as you want. By having smaller space between the two tones, you’re able to carefully blend towards the saturated color while maintaining the realism of the skin.

Look at him. He’s almost come to life.
