How to Draw Manga/Anime Clothes and Folds

Youre still going to go through some of the steps we covered when drawing anime clothes for female characters.

  • If we were to draw formal or office wear, the first thing youll need to do is create a rough sketch of the clothes. Use light lines to sketch the shirt and the trousers.
  • Add noticeable details to the sketch using light lines. At this stage, youre going to draw the collar, necktie, and add a belt to the outfit.
  • Afterward, use dark lines to trace the sketch while adding other important details. You can add the cuffs, seams, pockets, and pleats. Remember to add some folds as well.
  • If you opted to use guidelines during the first stage, make sure you get rid of them before you add some shadows to the clothing. However, you can proceed to the next step if you didnt use any guidelines.
  • Now that youve cleaned up the drawing, youll need to outline the contours inside the collar, the shirt, the inner part of the sleeves, a little around the pockets, and slightly around the middle area of the pants.
  • In this final stage, youre going to use uniform hatching to fill in the contours and add shadows to the outfit.
  • Always keep these two things in mind when drawing anime clothing:

    • Male bodies are straight and angular, while female bodies have an hourglass type of shape.
    • The clothes you draw will have different folds and wrinkles depending on the body shape of the character.

However, it can be difficult to move past the basics of clothes that lie flat on the person’s body – and it’s made more difficult when drawing girls, as their bodies tend to have a curvature to them and makes the fabric rest differently. You can’t stick to drawing flat dresses forever, so it’s best to learn how to draw clothing on anime girls.

    What Makes Clothes Anime

Its weird, but I think theres a certain style in place when drawing anime clothes. Like, the clothes are based on reality and all, but theres this small twist in them. Its hard to explain, so I do my best here.

When you think about anime characters and what type of clothing they use, its a bit different than what is thought to be normal. If you think about Dragon Ball Z, the clothes are very anime looking. Right!

And if you think about Akira, Code Geass, or My Hero Academia, theres this certain fantasy flavor in them. They look like they could be real, but you just know that they are anime clothes.

So how do you create these? How do you actually draw them?

    So lets tackle that then.

Below is an example image of an anime character I designed. As you can see, the character has this ballerina-like pose. And when we have this kind of pose, a suitable outfit is something very gentle, fragile, and elegant.

    When I draw the clothing, I keep in mind the flow of the pose and the flow of the hair. I try to bring as much dynamism to the clothes as possible.;

I like to keep the flow there, and I think THAT is the thing that makes anime clothes look like anime clothes.

    The clothing is infused with the characters. It is part of their character. They are one with the outfit, and it looks like the clothing moves with the character. Think Kill La Kill!;

Clothing that lives! I think that is the very essence of drawing anime clothing the right way.

    Drawing Folds In Clothing Step

This first step the line-art drawing, the underdrawing of the fabric/clothing and folds you plan to draw is the most important in this process. Here we need to think about how the underlying form impacts the shape of the clothing and folds.

We also need to sketch out placement of the main folds, so they are easy to return to later when you ready to render them.

I added a simple local color to this drawing.

Continuing to observe from step 1, I rendered out the shadows, trying my best to make sure they make sense for the form underneath the clothing.

We will cover each individual type of fold in a bit in this tutorial! For now, I want to go over some examples to give you an idea of the process.

Here, the highlights are added to make folds stand out. The focus is on planes that are hit by most light.

Its tough finding the perfect outfit. Even more so if the clothing is drawn awkwardly. Make it look smoother by learning how to add wrinkles and folds!

Clothing is unusual. It likes to fold in places that you dont expect, and is generally unpredictable, because every single thing you do seems to change the wrinkles in some way.

But lets break it down to its simpler foundations and make it easier, shall we?

As a general rule of thumb, unless the outfit is body-tight or way too small on the person, CLOTHING SHOULD NOT STICK ONTO THE PERSON. Its probably seen most often in people who like to use bases, but sometimes people will draw clothing really tightlyfor purposes probably better left unsaid.

Anime, surprisingly, uses minimal in terms in wrinkles and folds, simply because its a waste on their animation budget. Add the necessities for the situation, and youre good to go. Most of the detail appears in manga , which have more time and/or dedication put into it, thus can really add in wrinkles.

There is a such thing as too much, though, so; the important thing is to add when necessary, but not overdoing it.

Where to add in wrinkles and folds depends on many factors:

Type of fabric the cloth was made of. The thicker the fabric is, like wool, the less obvious the wrinkles will be, and vice versa; thin material like cotton will be prone to; have lots of wrinkles.

Identifying Points Of Tension In Folds For Drawing

Sometimes, instead of looking for points of tension in the folds fabric or clothing for your drawing, it helps to take the reverse approach. Look at your reference and think to yourself, what has to happen for the fabric to be stretched or pushed in the way that it is? Asking this question will lead you to the points of tension you are looking for.

Another way to find points of tension is to follow the folds back to their root. Folds will usually fan out of a point of tension. These points usually occur on bend knees, inside bent elbows, at shoulders, at glutes, at the pelvis, at the chest , at armpits, and often are created by the costume itself, by a belt, or suspenders.

Some more words on points of tension in clothing. Do not forget about motion when drawing folds. If you are drawing a dynamic figure, remember to question the path of motion in the context of points of tension.

For example, with arms being raised up, when wearing a dress shirt, clear points of tension are created at the armpit and the elbow. Try it and look in the mirror, you should see folds radiate and fan out from those areas. This means that these points can change depending on the action, and the garment itself how loose or tight it is on the body.

    Drawing An Anime Leather Jacket

To draw an anime style leather jacket on the body start by drawing its overall shape and major features such as where the zipper line and collar.

Leather is fairly rigid and even a tight jacket will somewhat conceal the shape of the body. The shoulder areas where the sleeves are stitched to the jacket will stick out be pointy while the chest area will be squeezed in. Draw accordingly.

In this example the major folds will be at the shoulder and on the inside of the elbow . There will also be some light folds at the level of the upper stomach area because the body is very slightly bent to one side.

Draw the lighter folds and the smaller parts like the details of the zipper and the pockets after you draw the major features.

    How To Color Anime Clothes

Here are my best tips on how to color anime clothes:

    • The transparent fabric should be colored lightly and so that the light shines through the fabric. Keep the shadows light and transparent.
    • The heavy fabric should have strong and dark shadows
    • A rubber texture should have clear light spots and a strong contrast between dark and light.
    • Change the darkness of the shading according to the material of the clothing
    • No color restrictions, use any color you like, just make sure it complements the personality of the character

In my example drawing, the character is elegant, maybe even royalty, so the coloring has to match that personality but also the design of the outfit.

    Drawing Cute Anime Clothes

    Whereas male clothing can be seen as rigid, I would say those drawing cute clothes is at the other end of the spectrum.;

Cute clothes can be seen as gentle, fragile even, or just plain cute. What makes things cute is color choices, the way the clothes are held, and the facial expression the character is having.

Ribbons, backpacks, jackets, and accessories that represent cute things emphasize the feeling of cute clothing.

Funny skirts or skirts that look like animals tend to be cute. But what also needs to be thought out is the way the clothes are presented and something that affects this a lot is the characters pose.
