Fill Sections With Circular Motions
The third technique, in stark contrast to the first and the second, involves filling sections with circular motions ?? instead of lines. By holding the pencil away from the tip at a lower angle to the paper, progress slowly even as you fill each and every section with circular motions to create even tones by hiding the strokes to create an overall shading effect. You will need to be a tad more patient with this technique compared to the first two but the end result in this case is also fuller and satisfying. Then again, the choice of technique largely depends on you ?.
Many artists use the first technique to portray nostalgic scenes back in time and hence contrast it from the scenes in the present. To add a more 3D depth to your drawing, you could resort to the second or the third technique depending on your ease.

Save Time Using Clip Studio Paint’s Smart Bucket Tool
Before I knew Clip Studio Paint, I used to waste countless hours drawing flat layers manually. Luckily, you dont have to make that mistake! The software’s Smart Bucket tool is very good at recognising line-art and with one click I can fill in most of the areas. If you play with its settings it can identify lines that have gaps in them, or even textured lines. To make sure all the pixels in my character are selected, I colour the background first on a separate layer. Then I switch off the line-art and colour the reverse on another layer.

Choose An Interesting Angle
The most difficult angle to work with when drawing a portrait is the frontal view. It needs careful symmetry, balance and well-measured proportions, and when you put all of this together it looks a little boring. I always struggle to make frontal poses look interesting, and end up trying to second-guess myself. Even if I push through the process, the result doesn’t look very attractive. However, if you choose a slightly more dynamic angle then you’ll be off to a good start!

Draw The Paths Of The Debris
Break up some of the larger curves of the outline from the previous step into smaller bumps . Next draw in the paths of the flying debris as shown int the example above.
These should basically be a series of different curves. Try keep the spacing of these fairly random to make them look more natural.

Lightly Draw A Simple Outline Of A Cloud
The purpose of this outline is to show you where to shade sky, so the lines dont need to be detailed. They dont even need to be complete. As you can see in this illustration, the lines are neither dark nor continuous.
Make sure not to draw too darkly. You want a guideline that lasts only long enough to shade the sky. Ive made this drawing a little darker than I ordinarily would so it shows up in an illustration, but the lighter you draw, the better.

Add The Facial Features
Draw two circles on the center guideline but leave a small opening at the bottom of each these will be your eyes. When youre drawing anime, the eyes are one of the most important features and are usually much bigger than the other facial features. Sketch in an arch over the top of each circle and a curved line around the far side of each to frame the eyes.
From here you can also add in a small V shape on the center guideline for the nose, a slightly curved line for a smiling mouth, and a couple of short and light pencil strokes underneath the eyes for a blushing effect.
Adding the facial features starts to bring your character to life.

Add More Shade To The Nose
Add more shade to the nose using a 4B pencil. Try to blend the shades together using the pencil itself. the transition of the tones of pencil shall be as smooth as possible.
Check the below figures that indicate each intermediate step in the shading process.
In the last picture, notice that I added more shades and the top of the nose is shaped.

Adding Shadows To The Hair
To add shadows to the hair, make long strokes with your Pencil tool that follow the flow of Alices hair. As you can see in the example above, you dont have to worry about being too messy when doing this well be going back in with our Eraser tool to rub out any areas we dont need. And, because youre using this gray color, its very easy to see the lines you need to rub out afterwards.Of course, you dont have to use a gray color when learning how to draw anime and manga if you dont want to you may prefer to use a vivid green for example. Any color is fine, so long as it shows up well against your other layers well be altering this later to create realistic-looking shadows in your painting. Feel free to change your brush size for larger areas and keep zooming in and out of your composition to give you a good overall view of how everything is looking. Once youve cleaned up your shading areas in the hair, youre ready to move on and lay in some shadows for Alices clothing.
Add The Final Touches
Your anime drawing is almost complete! Sketch two vertical lines directly under the face for the neck, making these as close together as youd like depending on how skinny or wide the neck should be.
Finish up the facial features before adding in the final touches.
Anime hair will be the biggest difference in your drawing, depending on if youre working on an anime girl drawing or an anime boy drawing.
For boy hair, draw a small dot about one inch from the top of the face circle. From here, youll draw curved lines down to create a floppy hairstyle thats common for male characters. Youll frame these out by looping the lines up on the other side of your first lines to create shapes that look like a palm tree.
Hair on anime characters is typically messy so dont worry about it looking perfect.
For girl characters, youll start with those same curved lines that you would on a boy character, but keep these to only one or two lines. Youll then draw bigger curved lines around the outside of the face to create longer hair. Shade the outer edges of the hair to make it stand out and add any additional lines youd like to give it some more shape.
Once your drawing is complete, erase the guidelines before coloring or going over in ink.
Once youve added in the hair, you can erase your original guidelines and your drawing is finished!

Use Coloured Reflections In Your Art
Here’s a cool technique to bring your illustrations to life: add reflected colours in the shadow areas or on the edges where different colours meet. Colours often reflect each other in nature. If the character is placed in an environment with strong red elements for example, red is likely to reflect in some darker colours . The same goes for the blue of the sky or green from the grass. In illustration it can be exaggerated manga artists often use skin hue around the face on clothes and hair to make the character’s skin look soft, almost appearing to glow.
