Fine Tuning Depth Of Field
To give the illustration more depth and make it look more natural, I use a blur filter for the foreground and background elements. With this filter, these elements blur and slip out of focus. Depending on how far or close these elements are, I also adjust the strength of the filter. And there you have it, you have drawn a manga character!
Use A Hard Brush Rather Than A Soft Airbrush
Good drawings have both soft and hard shadows in place, but if you’re not sure what and where they should go, choose the hard edge. Drawings look much better with flat cell shading rather than mellow soft airbrush shading for everything. I always use a hard brush first and then blend selected edges into soft ones if necessary.
In this step I’ve added some shading to all of the colour layers. Much like artists who use ambient occlusion, this shading doesnt define any light source. Rather, it adds some depth to the character and makes her look more interesting. Let me show you how I do it in the next step.

Drawing Anime Body & Pose
Poses, figures, bodies in anime and manga has always been and will still defy laws of proportions and rules of the human figure.
If you think anime movies like Afro Samurai and feel the shapes of the characters body movements, the flow of hands and legs, you quickly see that they genuinely defy natural proportions of the human figure.
However, that being said, the characters still feel and look like real humans, and that is because they always follow rules of muscles and proportions. Even though anime characters usually somewhat distorts the human figure, they still have the correct dimensions if you exclude the head .

The first recommendation I would make is to find a good art program like Firealpaca, Medibang, Ibis Paint X, Photoshop, Procreate, and more! However, do keep in mind that different art programs have different layouts, tools, and prices. Photoshop, Procreate, Clipstudio, and Paint Tool SAI are all amazing drawing programs but all cost real money. Some free alternatives are Firealpaca, Krita, Medibang, and Ibis Paint X, but Firealpaca and Krita are only on desktops, and Medibang and Ibis Paint X are mobile! Also, a little side note: for the bottom art, I used Medibang!

Use The Transparent Watercolor Brush As A Blender
For me, a much more powerful tool than the Blending brush or any other paint brush is the Transparent Watercolor default brush in Clip Studio Paint. You can see the settings I use in the screenshot, but I change them as I paint. If you set Amount of Paint to a low value, it blends the colours together, depending on the direction of your strokes and the pressure you put on your pen, and it doesn’t matter what colour you’ve chosen for your brush. If you set that value to a high number, it’ll blend the colour of your brush with the existing colours. This tool has so much versatility, and surprisingly the results doesn’t even look like watercolours

Materials For Manga Drawing
Drawing digitally is of course not very cheap in the beginning, but it has the advantage that you dont have to pay attention if your pens and colors are all filled up or if you have enough paper left. While drawing you can also correct most mistakes more easily. However, it takes practice to get used to using a drawing tablet, so be patient with yourself. I would recommend using:
- The drawing program Clip Studio Paint or its predecessor Manga Studio 5.0 Ex
- The Wacom Cintiq Tablet and Pen
Represent Light Or Shadow:
Strong strokes in certain areas of your figure will create the feeling that light does not reach this point .
Also by varying the thickness of the lines on one side of the figure, you might suggest shading .
For light, we use fine lines or open spaces. Keep in mind, the thinner the line, the more intense the light feels .

How To Start Drawing In A Manga Style
Aspiring manga artists can learn by trying to replicate particular comics or cartoons that inspire them. The first step is to allow yourself this period of complete lack of originality, says author and manga instructor Mark Crilley. Consider yourself like the apprentice learning from a master. Writer and illustrator Mildred Louis began that way too. I started drawing by basically copying anime, she says.
As you learn the skills, consider yourself like the apprentice learning from a master.
Not only will you sharpen your eye, but youll get your hand accustomed to the pen or stylus. Your muscles are not trained yet, and so much of drawing is muscle memory, comics artist Ethan Young says.
However, copying is very different from plagiarism. While replicating other work as a drawing exercise is valuable, dont pass it off as your own.
Section 22 Drawing Faces
Now that you have your characters head with all of the needed facial features, its probably a good time to add some ears and hair .
Ears are relatively simple unless youre showing them really up close. For this tutorial, theyll be pretty basic. Typically, ears should go from about the top of the eyes to the bottom of the nose. Its usually a good idea to look at a picture of an ear for reference during this part just so you can get a more solid idea of the shape. Obviously the earlobe will be thicker than the tip of the ear, but its entirely up to you when deciding how big they should be or what shape looks best.
Manga hair this is where you can really use your imagination. Short, long, curly, straight, spiked, bangs, tied back. The options are almost endless. Lets keep it simple, though.
Very lightly, draw a rough outline of the hair. Dont worry about parts or points or anything like that yet. Just focus on where you want the hairline to sit and how it should lay around the ears. From here you can start experimenting with length, bangs, and more of the fine details. Unlike realistic hair that is made up of millions of individual strands, manga hair is drawn in several sections or clumps. Once the shape of the hair is how you like it, you can start adding some finer lines throughout the different sections of hair to indicate the way it flows and where shadows will lie.
