Netflix Outside Japan: How Many Shows On Netflix Have Japanese Subtitles

As you may know, the shows available on Netflix differ by country. If you subscribe to Netflix in Japan, pretty much every single show will have Japanese subs included. This is not the case if you subscribe from another country like the United States.

However, even if you are subscribing outside of Japan, Netflix still has a decent number of shows with Japanese subs. According to one thread on the;Duolingo forums, Netflix has 46 anime series and 13 movies with Japanese subtitles:

I compiled this list from two separate A-Z searches. One for TV Shows, and the other for Movies. I checked all 100 shows, and 40 movies, listed. At present, there are 46 Anime Series, and 13 Movies of Animes, with Japanese subtitles on Netflix.

As the shows on Netflix are always changing, these numbers are likely different now. However, despite some small variation, the general numbers of shows should be the same. And several dozen shows should give you plenty of content to supplement your Japanese studies with.

One advantage of using Netflix is that many of us have Netflix subscriptions already. This means you can login and look through the available options at zero cost. Dont have a Netflix subscription? No problem. They offer a free trial that gives you a free month.

However, if you are a hardcore learner, a few dozen shows might not be enough. To get even more shows with subtitles on Netflix, you will need to sign up for a Netflix Japan account.

American animators are super lucky. Most people agree that anime not only looks better but has better story telling and is much deeper and meaningful than American cartoons. Obviously anime not only has become more popular than American cartoon but has dominated conventions as well. Despite of the fact that anime is more popular and overall better entertainment than American cartoons, Japanese animators are paid shit. Read the article The Dark Side of Japan Anime Industry.

Americans have it real good. Many people complain about America but at least, even the art field, we do so much better. Japanese animators are not respected. The pay is so low that some animators commit suicide and animation studios donât care. If you are an anime fan then you have probably heard of this. As a matter of fact, I, Andy Matrix, the owner of this website, had a dream of being an animator after high school. However, that dream was crushed after I saw the reality of how animators are treated, not so much in America but in Japan.

You already know how much it takes to make at least one episode of a low budget cartoon show in America as well as the popular shows. In Japan, one anime episode would cost $180,000 to $250,000. That is just one episode. An animator makes $1200 per month and sometimes less. Again go check out the article on the dark side of the anime industry. An animator in Japan makes the same amount or less as a McDonalds employee would.

How To Pitch And Sell An Animated Series: Part 1

Youve spent months, possibly even years, developing your idea for a series, but now comes the big moment: you have to convince broadcasters, distributors, and producers about the viability of your idea.

In the international marketplace, pitching your project at a market or co-production forum is often essential to getting a project launched. During my years of attending and pitching at European markets like Cartoon Springboard and Annecy, Ive scribbled down many dos and donts about how to pitch at these events.

In this multi-part mini-comic thatll run on Cartoon Brew over the next few weeks, Ill be sharing pitching tips and tricks. We begin today with tips on setting up, which will be followed by other sections such as communicating clearly and building trust.

It should be noted that pitching practices vary all over the world, so not every pitch tip will apply to every pitching situation. For example, in the United States, most animated series are not pitched at production forums in the presence of distributors and broadcasters. It is important to do your research beforehand and understand to whom youll be pitching your project and in what format. While these tips are based on experiences at European markets specifically, you will find that many of the tips will be applicable to other pitching situations as well.

Enter The Production Committee

Anime production is an extremely labor-intensive proposition, employing the services of up to 2,000 people per episode around the world. Most of the grunt work is now done in third world countries across Asia, and the use of digital technology has reduced costs across the board. Anime production is now as efficient as it’s ever been.

That said, a single anime episode costs about US$100,000-300,000 per episode, according to various producers we’ve talked to. That might seem like a lot, but in reality it’s pretty cheap, about on par with an American deep-cable TV show. But multiplied across 13 episodes, that nonetheless turns into a total budget of US$2-4 million.

That’s a lot of money. Few companies are rich enough to invest that much in a single show. If it tanked and they lost all that money, most would never be able to recover.

It used to be, back in the 80s when Japan was flush with money, a company would just decide to make a one- or two-part . They’d throw a few hundred thousand dollars at an animation production company, and the production company would haphazardly churn out an OAV. They’d release it on video, a few thousand rental shops across Japan would buy copies, and the show would turn a tidy profit. Or if a longer series seemed possible, the TV networks would pay most of the cost, and support the show with commercials.

TOKYO Business has never been better for Japanese anime. And that is exactly why Tetsuya Akutsu is thinking about calling it quits.

When Mr. Akutsu became an animator eight years ago, the global anime market including TV shows, movies and merchandise was a little more than half of what it would be by 2019, when it hit an estimated $24 billion. The pandemic boom in video streaming has further accelerated demand at home and abroad, as people binge-watch kid-friendly fare like Pokémon and cyberpunk extravaganzas like Ghost in the Shell.

But little of the windfall has reached Mr. Akutsu. Though working nearly every waking hour, he takes home just $1,400 to $3,800 a month as a top animator and an occasional director on some of Japans most popular anime franchises.

And he is one of the lucky ones: Thousands of lower-rung illustrators do grueling piecework for as little as $200 a month. Rather than rewarding them, the industrys explosive growth has only widened the gap between the profits they help generate and their paltry wages, leaving many to wonder whether they can afford to continue following their passion.

I want to work in the anime industry for the rest of my life, Mr. Akutsu, 29, said during a telephone interview. But as he prepares to start a family, he feels intense financial pressure to leave. I know its impossible to get married and to raise a child.

Plan For Printing Before You Draw The Actual Manga

Before you start drawing the actual manga there are a few things you should be aware of.

If you actually plan on getting your manga professionally printed you should do some research on the standard print sizes for such material. If you are just drawing your manga for practice and will print it at home you can do whatever your home printer can handle. With that said it might still be better to try and do one in a size standardized for the industry even if its just for practice.

It is important to also be aware that the standard sizes for a manga in a country like Japan may be different to what is standard for a comic book in other countries. Be careful to actually get the size that is available for you to print in.

If you want your manga printed you should also be aware of the live area, bleed and trim.

  • How Much It Cost To Make A Cartoon Show

A Beginners Guide to Making Anime

So we are going to talk about the cost of series episodes versus animated movies like the ones Disney used to make.

The number I am going to give you here apply to all companies such as Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and other animation studios.

To create a cartoon show you need a script, character design , a storyboard, animation and finally the voice actors. So the budget applies to all these things necessary to make the show come to life. The average cost for a cartoon show like Steven Universe, American Dragon, Cat Dog, Cow and Chicken, Hey Arnold , The Fairy Odd Parents, its $300,000 to $600,000 per episode.

The smaller the budget, the smaller the team that works on it and of course, the bigger the budget the bigger the team. So lets say, for the production of Hey Arnold, if the show is given $400,000 per episode then that budget is spread through the production team. Now of course with a budget of $400K the team is going to be much smaller. So regularly you will have a lead animator and then you will have 3 other animators working on the show. The average salary for animators is $60,000. So with three people that is $180,000 pent. Now the voice actors are paid handsomely . Most voice actors make $80,000 to $100,000 per year. A voice actor easily makes $10,000 per episode of a cartoon. Lets also not forget the sound effect editor, the story board artist and the people who color everything.
