Drawing Anime Hands Start With A General Shape Work General To Specific

How To Draw Manga: Fast Hand Action Motion

In both method we will cover below to draw anime hands, the glove/mitten method and the simple form construction method, we will start with a very basic shape for the palm of the hand.

It is a boxy and concave shape. Check the diagram above, then try to make different hand gestures and observe your own hands as well, and observe how this shape changes from one gesture to the next.

Drawing Crossed Anime Arms

To draw crossed anime arms like in the example above its a good idea to think of the drawing as see through.

Being able to look at the arms as see through allows you to know if the visible parts of the arms are correctly placed. For example the fingers on the left arm.

You dont need to draw every hidden detail like the individual fingers in the previous example. Instead do sketch like the above example to help you estimate their general size and position.

After confirm that it all looks right simply erase the parts that are supposed to be hidden, add the smaller details and go over your sketch with darker more solid lines.

Importance Of Proper Poses

Even if you are a reasonable good artist an improperly drawn stance can greatly detract from your drawing and the message your are trying to convey to the viewer.

For example in the two punch drawings above the first one looks like a person holding their arm out while the second looks like they are actually punching.

Its very important to properly convey the action or stance you want to show. Without that an even otherwise well done drawing wont look right.

Drawing Anime Hands A Step

The glove/mitten method stems from the fact that most of us can better imagine and draw a glove or a mitten than a detailed anime hand.

You dont have to worry about drawing in fingers. With this method, you only worry about the general shapes. Controlling general shapes is basis for all good drawing. That is to say, every great drawing starts with the artist having full control of the general shape of what they are drawing.

Start drawing anime hands with a simple boxy shape of a glove or a mitten. With this type of simplification fingers are indicated with one rectangular shape, then the simplified form is drawn over with more detail and by adding divisions of the fingers.

Above is a good example of how the glove/mitten method works.

When you draw the simplified form, think about the general shape of the hand, its proportions, the general gesture. Worry about the details on the second pass.

Above is an example of a very simplified form drawn for the fist. Note that, although the fingers twist down, I was able to draw that in later.

It was easier to draw because the general shape and perspective of the drawing was resolved in the simplified and boxy under-drawing on the left.

Note that all of the drawings of anime hands I made for the tutorial start with the general shape of the palm.

Below are two more examples.

Contrast Straights And Curves

manga draw source

The contrast between straight lines and curved lines is an essential design element. A sketch made up of straight lines would feel too tense, while a drawing using mostly curved lines would lack structure.;

Curves are generally used to suggest the more fleshy part of the figure, whereas straights are more commonly used to imitate stable and solid segments. For example, compare the use of a straight line for a characters back and the soft curve of their stomach.

Understanding Basic Hand Anatomy To Draw Anime Hands

I published a very detailed tutorial that covers drawing and anatomy of the hand. This tutorial can be found at the following link.;

Below, lets cover the very basics we need to understand about the structure of the hand for anime and manga drawing.;

The metacarpals create the palm of the hand, fingers stem from these bones.

Phalanges are the bones of the fingers, notice how each finger has three joints one at the knuckle one in the middle and one closer to the tip.

Notice also that the thumb has only two phalanges.;The third joint is at the metacarpals back at the wrist area. This will become important when you draw the thumb, as it will have only two visible joints compared to the three for the fingers.

Mapping The Face For Anime & Manga

This tutorial explains how you draw face and head from different angles. Might require some previous knowledge on how to draw an anime face. So if you didnt watch the previous video yet. Do start from there.

This video is more advanced and shows you how you can draw the face from any angle if you apply the knowledge creatively. The examples are easy to follow and shows you how to approach when drawing eyes and other features in different angles.

Though Mikey is using traditional methods, the results are just damn impressive. Easy to learn but may be hard to master.

    Combine Expression And Body Language

    How to draw movement

    We should also consider how the character is feeling. Visual clues such as facial expression and body language can help convey the emotions of the character immediately. A character feeling confident may stand with their shoulders back and their head held high. On the other hand, a timid character may be crossing their arms, with their head hung low.

    Understanding How A Mouth Opens

    When drawing a mouth in any style its important to understand how the jaw opens. The jaw does not simply lower down like an elevator but instead swings down more like a door swings on its hinges but unlike a door it also moves slightly forward.

    Excluding the lips the top part of the mouth does not move.

    In this tutorial I will be taking you through the steps of how to animate a character walking in place. Basically you will be creating a walk that loops infinitely, so if you were to incorporate a walk like this into a movie, perhaps the background would be scrolling from right to left behind the character to give the illusion of forward movement.;

    A walking character is one of the most important things to learn as an animator. Animation is all about creating the illusion of movement. One of the things that characters do the most to get around and move is walking! So let’s get to it!;

    How to show movement when drawing manga

    Start by drawing lines. Three similar ones and a really long one

    Now, youre going to draw all the sketches of each part of the body.

    Starting at the head: make a circle with a triangle at the bottom.

    For the torso: make a rectangle, followed by sausages for the arms . And another two structures for the fists.

    Make a rectangle for the hips, and sausages for legs, followed by shapes for the feet. Mark the main joints.

    Once finished, follow all the main lines for the Lineart. Try to give movement. After all, its a moving action.

    After finished, erase your sketch. Add details such as bone structures and shadows for better results.

    Start by drawing lines that will help you with body proportions.

    Now, youre going to draw all the sketches of each part of the body.

    Starting at the head: make a circle with a triangle at the bottom. That will serve as the jawline.

    For the torso: make a rectangle, followed by sausages for the arms. The shapes of the hands will depend on your desired form.

    Make a circle for the hips, and sausages for legs, followed by shapes for the feet.

    Also, mark the main joints to help you with movement and anatomy: shoulders, elbows, and knees.

    Your sketch is finished. Now for the Lineart, try to follow all the main lines and think about fluidity when drawing. Pay attention to the curved lines and straight ones. That really makes a difference.

    After youve finished, erase your sketch. Add details such as bone structures and shadows for better results.

    All shadows depend on where the light is, so they may change according to each drawing and perspective.

    Congratulations Really Nice Work

    Head turns are tricky because you have to keep the head looking consistent throughout or it won’t be a convincing head turn. And the elements of the head have to remain consistent too, such as the nose, eyes,;etc.;

    For the character that I used as an example, I worked super roughhe doesn’t even have ears. Other head turns can be harder with characters that have more detail. As long as you remember to keep the same volume and mass as the head turns, you’ll do just fine. And remember, keep animating!

    “Straight ahead action” means drawing an animated scene frame by frame from beginning to end. “Pose to pose” refers only to the design of key frames which will be filled with the remaining intervals later. Interestingly, the first technique is used only in 2D animations. But the technique of “pose to pose” is still used in storyboards for film and 3D animation.

    Draw The Face Center Line

    Erase the half of the oval that will be facing towards the back of the head . From the forward facing part project a straight line that will represent the center of the face. This line should be on a slight angle towards the back of the head. It should also reach down to at least the point that will be the bottom of the chin.

    Once done you should have a basic construction drawing to help you create the rest of the head and face.

    How To Start Drawing In A Manga Style

    How to Show Movement in Drawings

    Aspiring manga artists can learn by trying to replicate particular comics or cartoons that inspire them. The first step is to allow yourself this period of complete lack of originality, says author and manga instructor Mark Crilley. Consider yourself like the apprentice learning from a master. Writer and illustrator Mildred Louis began that way too. I started drawing by basically copying anime, she says.;

    As you learn the skills, consider yourself like the apprentice learning from a master.

    Not only will you sharpen your eye, but youll get your hand accustomed to the pen or stylus. Your muscles are not trained yet, and so much of drawing is muscle memory, comics artist Ethan Young says.;

    However, copying is very different from plagiarism. While replicating other work as a drawing exercise is valuable, dont pass it off as your own.

    Draw The Small Details Of The Facial Features

    At this stage erase the parts of the head hidden by the hair and add the inner details of the eyes and ears.

    The areas that you will want to define inside/around the eyes are:

    • The pupils same or similar shape as the irises but smaller
    • The highlights in this case a large and a small one in each eye
    • The darker/shaded top areas upper halves of the irises
    • Eyelids just a hint with a pair of lines slightly above the eyes

    For a step by step breakdown of the various parts of the eyes see:

    You can also add the inner details of the ear as shown the example above.

    For more on drawing ears see:

    Once finished with this stage of the drawing you can darken your lines by tracing over them. However leave the lines defining the eye highlights and shadows light as you want those to blend into the color/shading.
