Stretch Armstrong And The Flex Fighters

10 Best Netflix Anime Series

Creators: Kevin Burke, Victor Cook, Chris Wyatt

Cast: Ogie Banks, Scott Menville, Steven Yeun, Wil Wheaton, Keith David, Nazneen Contractor, Kelly Hu, Felicia Day, Kate Mulgrew, Miguel Ferrer, Walter Koenig

You might not expect the Hasbro stretchy toy “Stretch Armstrong” to make compelling source material for an animated series, but Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters takes the basics of this action figure and turns them into something super. Stretch himself anchors a team of three stretchy superheroes, each with their own particular specialty when it comes to their powers. The show is both familiar in its setting and storytelling while being wholly original with its superhero creations, which is a rare thing these days and an absolute delight. The series also takes advantage of Netflix’s interactive technology, which is put on display in Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout.

The Studio Ghibli Collection

You could make a case for just about every single Studio Ghibli film, or only watching several, or picking the best 3. It doesnt really matter Studio Ghibli films are excellent, and now that theyre on Netflix, you should watch as many as you can.

Everyone has their favourites, like;Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, Tale of the Princess Kaguya;or;Princess Mononoke. Ive always had a soft spot for;Howls Moving Castle, not because I think its better than the other Ghibli films, but just because it hit me at the perfect time.

Anyway, theyre all great. Binge away.

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Best Anime Series on Netflix Right Now (June 2019)

The thing that saves you when a friend dies is having more friends around you to share the pain and remind you that its OK to move on. Anohana is an 11-episode series entirely based around the grief a young friend group experience when they lose one of their own, who reappears like a ghostly figure in their lives and haunts their day-to-day until they can learn to accept the fact that shes gone and that, sometimes, life works out this way. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica was written and produced by master anime deconstructivist Gen Urobuchi with the express intention of upending your expectations. Explicitly marketed as a standard entry in the magical girl anime genre, Madoka Magica famously subverts several of the tropes that define that genre. Without spoiling too much here, the show makes no bones about killing off main characters, withholding exposition from the viewer, or turning the tables on the characters ethics . If youre cool with the cutesy veneer, Madoka Magicas ambitions are obvious and fully realized through its writing and trippily surreal animation.

Kulipari: An Army Of Frogs

Creator: Trevor Pryce

Cast: Charles Adler, Lacey Chabert, Keith David, Josh Keaton, Mark Hamill, Kevin Michael Richardson, Mikey Kelley

Kulipari: An Army of Frogs is one of those original series you might have missed, but it’s a fun new entry into the realm of animated kids shows. This one comes, perhaps surprisingly, from the mind of former NFL star Trevor Pryce and is based on his novel series. The story itself is a great throwback to classic fantasy/action/adventure tales told through anthropomorphic animal pals, and though it does feature battles and a bit of violence, it’s pretty kid-friendly. Kulipari centers on Darel, the son of a famous Kulipari warrior who dreams of joining their ranks despite his lack of talent. But when the Amphibilands is threatened by the powerful alliance of the Scorpions and the mystical Spider Queen, Darel and his pals must step up if they hope to save their friends, family, and home. Kulipari is a cool new entry in the genre and it’s still early on, making now the perfect time to check it out!

Kaze Ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru

First aired: 2018 | Episodes: 23Where to watch it: Crunchyroll;

Any good sports anime will leave you wired with tension, glued to each play and each moment of team bonding. Long-distance track racing however, is not necessarily a sport that makes people dizzy with adrenaline, and so Production I.G., a studio that really knows their sports , takes things down a notch.

Meet Kakeru, a former ace runner ;who lost his friends and his club due to an altercation in high school. Now a university student, he gets invited to a downtrodden dormitory. It turns out that the dorm houses the involuntary members of a running club, all roped in by Haiji Kiyose, who wants them to participate in the Hakone Ekiden, the most prestigious university relay race in all of Japan.;

Its a ridiculous plan, but the series takes you all the way from a group of young men refusing to even entertain the idea to reluctant training and finally, the race. Each of them faces different personal issues, and if theres one reason you likely wont expect from a sports anime, its sobbing like a baby when one of them has a breakthrough. The emotional depth of Run with the Wind is just that great, and its nice to see an anime like this focus on the issues of young men, rather than high school students.

Japanese animation has become a major influence on Western cartoons, contemporary cinema, and even fashion design. The Best Anime To Watch On Netflix

While it may not have the largest anime catalog, Netflix is a great starting point to see what anime has to offer

You’re scrolling through Netflix’s catalog and have come to a horrible realization: You’ve run out of true crime documentaries and you’ve burned through all of Nailed It! three times already. What else is there left to watch? There’s anime, and there’s never been a better time to get into the medium.

These imported animated series from Japan are more made up of more than just beat-em-ups and giant robots, though there are plenty of those, too, and some of them are really darn great. There is actually plenty of variety, if you know what to look for.

While it may not have the largest streaming catalog of anime, Netflix has some great starting points to get a sense of what anime has to offer. In the guide below, you’ll find the robots and the butt-kickers, yes, but you’ll also find quiet, character-driven dramas and rollicking comedies, both of the sports and romantic subgenres. We also tossed in some weird shows that are just very extra, so you can get a full sense of just what anime has to offer. Then, maybe, you won’t wait to watch it as a last resort when you simply can’t watch another docudrama murder show.

Haikyu Journeys Into The Underappreciated World Of Volleyball

Top 10 Netflix Anime Series You Need To Watch

An underlying theme of anime programs involves underdogs. It doesn’t matter if they’re superheroes-in-training or future ninjas, it’s their journey from square one that transforms viewers into fans. A prime example of this is the sports anime;HAIKYU!!

The show’s main focus is Hinata, a;junior high school student enamored by a volleyball competition he sees on TV. Inspired, he joins a local volleyball club. Even though he’s shorter than the average player, he trains hard and becomes a crucial teammate and friend to many others.;HAIKYU!!;is here because of its positive messages about hard work.

The Castle Of Cagliostro

Released in 1979, The Castle of Cagliostro is somewhat different from Hayao Miyazakis more famous works at Studio Ghibli. While he went on to make other adaptations like Howls Moving Castle, Cagliostro is actually part of a wider franchise. It belongs to the anime/manga series about Lupin III, a master thief inspired by the early 20th century literary character Arsène Lupin. His adventures fall somewhere between Sherlock Holmes and comedy heist capers, with The Castle of Cagliostro following Lupin as he tracks down the origin of some counterfeit money. Aggretsuko Features A Red Panda That Sings Thrash Metal

This is definitely;something of an outlier as;Aggretsuko doesn’t exactly look like an anime. This is because the series is animated in Flash. Thus,;it takes on the cutesy style of;Hello Kitty instead of brandishing some of the stylistic choices;fans have come to know from anime. However, don’t let the chibi animals fool you, as;Aggretsuko is anything but cute.

The series follows Retsuko, a red panda who works a job that she hates, with a boss that she hates, and a career path that she hates. Her only relief from her sucky life comes from;singing;speed metal karaoke. The series is fun, relatable, and surprisingly deep.

Miraculous: Tales Of Ladybug & Cat Noir

Creator: Thomas Astruc

Cast: Cristina Valenzuela, Bryce Papenbrook, Keith Silverstein, Mela Lee, Max Mittelman, Carrie Keranen, Selah Victor, Benjamin Diskin

The French CGI action/adventure series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir is an instant eye-grabber thanks to the fantastic designs of Thomas Astruc and the animated stylings of Zagtoon and Method Animation. It’s a story about the titular superheroes, mild-mannered Parisian teenagers who transform into their supersuits in order to keep the city safe from supervillains. Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste somehow remain ignorant of each other’s true identities even as the sparks fly between them either in costume or as plain-clothes school students. Miraculous is a super-stylish series that, to me, is the modern equivalent of Sailor Moon. It’s catchy, it’s high-concept, it’s got a lot of action packed into each episode, and the Parisian, adolescent romance is at the heart of the whole story. This is one of the cooler titles available on Netflix so do yourself a favor and check it out before it becomes the next big thing.
