Why Do People Think That Drawing Anime Is Easy

Mini-tutorial: How to Draw Noses! (Manga/Anime)

Anime is a very specific art style, that draws focus to the face to effectively show emotion. So the highest detail is the face. The rest is drawn very simplistically. But simplistic does not mean that it is easy to draw!

Unfortunately, a lot of people think, that because Anime is abstract and simplified in so many areas, that it is easy to draw.

A lot of Anime styles, for example, only draw a simple line in place of the mouth and only draw a little shadow of the nose instead of a realistic nose and more.

But you still have to know where the nose is sitting on a face to draw a believable shadow and the same goes for the mouth.

And even though you arent drawing extremely realistic lightning in Anime drawings you sill have to know how light works, how the color changes when it hits different surfaces and how the shadow is cast in order to make something look believable.

So even though a lot of things are simplified in Anime, it does not mean Anime is easy to draw! You will have to know the same fundamentals and on top of that, you have to learn how to abstractly draw the reality in a believable way.

So in some ways drawing anime is maybe even harder than fine art, where you sometimes only copy reality.

But if you are one of the people who think, that anime is easy to draw then why not try and follow a guide on how to draw some anime eyes and then you can see where you end up and how hard it really is.

Draw Final Lineart Over Your Sketch

In this final stage of our drawing, we will attempt to draw over our sketchy messy lines to complete our drawing of Anime girls face. Three things to focus on as you do this:

  • This is the step where you must try to draw with swift, beautiful lines. To achieve this, try to put down confident pencil strokes that come from the shoulder and the elbow, and less so from the wrist.
  • You must attempt to see not just the detail you are drawing but also the entire drawing of the face at once. Yes, focus on the detail, but try to draw it with the larger context of the face in mind.
  • Finally, attempt to do away with sketchyness of the previous step. In certain areas of the drawing, you will have multiple sketchy lines, you will have to exercise your judgment to find the best path for the line and draw the new, fresh, crisp line only in that one path.

With the above three ideas in mind, lets begin to draw over our sketch.

You should feel confident when drawing your lines. Anime and Manga art relies heavily on beautiful line art, and lines that dont carry some confidence dont appear beautiful to the eye.

If you are struggling with confident lines, try the follow techniques:

Once you try the above, come back to our drawing of the Anime girls face, and try to focus on producing confident, clean lines, akin to the ones you see in your favorite Anime and Manga art.

Male And Female Anime Faces

Although manga style faces are pretty feminine to begin with, there are certain ways to make the face look more masculine:

  • The eyebrows are placed low above the eyes.
  • The eyebrows may be thicker and less curved.
  • The eyes are narrower.
  • The eyelashes are minimal and less prominent.
  • The pupil is small and circular.
  • The lips are even less pronounced.
  • The jawline is more pronounced.
  • The neck is thicker.
  • The nose is more pronounced.

Of course, not all of these methods must be applied. Sometimes, the sex difference is shown only by the clothes and the hairstyle!

Why You May Be Struggling With Drawing Anime

So if you are struggling with drawing Anime, then you should honestly ask yourself this question: Did I learn the fundamentals or did I skip them?

If your answer is I skipped them then you should go back and learn the fundamentals. I know, that they tend to be very technical and might even be boring in some areas, but if you learn them your ability as an artist will improve by a lot.

Like its not even funny how much you will improve after you have learned them! So go back and learn the fundamentals! I did it so you can do it as well!

If your answer is I learned them then you either just need a little more exercise or you are simply too hard to yourself. Don´t compare yourself to all the pros out there!

They have years and years of experience in their field, so obviously you can´t learn how to draw like them in a short time. You still have to practice. But I promise you, if you practice and if you dont give up, you will get there and you will draw like a pro!

Anime is a popular animation and drawing style that originated in Japan. Drawing anime characters can seem overwhelming, especially when youre looking at your favorite anime that was drawn by professionals. Fortunately, anyone can learn how to draw anime characters, and the process is fairly simple if you break it down into small steps.

Draw The Nose Of Anime And Manga Characters In The Usual Way

To draw the nose of anime and manga characters from the side view in the most popular way, you draw a small trailing line check in the vertical direction and no need to draw nostrils.

Do the same for the 3/4 face angle but the check mark is smaller to represent another angle. You can also draw a small curve or a dot to represent the tip but don’t draw the top curve.

With a perspective , draw a ball of the nose on one side, or a vertical line in the middle to represent the nostril. Also depending on the style of story you want to draw, even for simplicity you may not need to draw the character nose

Above are some suggestions when drawing the nose for Anime and Manga characters. However, you can completely create your own nose styles with different styles, different views according to your preferences. However, don’t be too fussy and still follow certain characteristics of the anime style. Good luck!

Add The Facial Features

Draw two circles on the center guideline but leave a small opening at the bottom of each; these will be your eyes. When youre drawing anime, the eyes are one of the most important features and are usually much bigger than the other facial features. Sketch in an arch over the top of each circle and a curved line around the far side of each to frame the eyes.;

From here you can also add in a small V shape on the center guideline for the nose, a slightly curved line for a smiling mouth, and a couple of short and light pencil strokes underneath the eyes for a blushing effect.

Adding the facial features starts to bring your character to life.

Draw Jawline And Hair

How To Draw THE NOSE (CARTOON NOSES Vs ANIME)

Here then, you draw the jawline. At first, it is not very precise. So you can just sketch, trying to find the look of what it potentially may become as the final resultjust feeling how it should go or how it could go.

What we are missing now is the hair, so lets draw some kind of hair for the character. I dont have any specific hairstyle in mind, but Im just drawing something that looks kinda rough or something.

I suggest you draw the hair on another layer so later on, if you feel like something went wrong or you want to change the size of the hair or anything regarding the hair, you can easily change it by just going to the hair layer and modifying that.

Instead of having to erase certain parts in the face or something else, you can just modify the hair layer, and thats it. Easy.

Drawing A 3/4 View In Anime Style

I will now go through my process in drawing the 3/4 head seen at the top of this post! Since this post is on drawing in the 3/4 view, I wont go into detail about drawing the facial features and hair. I will make separate tutorials on them in the future.

Adding guidlines

As usual, I started off with a circle and some guidelines. Draw a curved line vertically around 3/4 to the side of the circle and one more at the other side.

One line will be guiding the centre of the face and another will help us locate where the ear and end of the jaw is.

Draw a horizontal line across the centre of the circle. This is to help locate the rest of the features later on, like eyebrows or eyes.

Adding the chin

At the right side, the jaw ends aroughly where the other curved line and the circle touch.

Adding in features

The eyes sit slightly below the horizontal curve line we made earlier. It is also where theres a slight dip above the cheeks.

And again as usual, the nose is between the eyebrows and bottom of the chin. The mouth is located between the nose and the bottom of the chin but alittle higher. The ear lies between the top of the eyes and the bottom of the nose, it also sits around the curved guide line on the right we made earlier.

Add in the hair

Add in the hair! Make sure theres some volume/space between the hair and the skull! Ill be making hair drawing tutorials in the future.

Draw The Face And Neck

Working on an anime boy drawing is very similar to creating a girl character. Your first steps should be to draw the outline for the face and neck before you can add the fun facial features.

Lightly sketch a freehand circle with a vertical guideline going straight down the middle. Youll want this to extend past the bottom of the circle as far as youd like the chin to be. Then draw a slightly curved line down each side of the circle, sloping in more toward the bottom of the vertical line. Where these meet will be the bottom of the face.

Underneath the face, draw two vertical lines for the neck and a line off each side for the top of the shoulders.

Using guidelines helps to position all of your characters features correctly.

How To Draw A Nose: Learn The Basics From The Anime Or Manga Style

Tripboba.com – When it comes to drawing face parts, well be dealing with a nose. While drawing, it may seem easy.

But, this part is even skipped in some simple cartoon drawings. It can be a real deal if we dont know how to do it properly. Plus, there are just a lot of nose shapes in real life. So, its important to pick the right ones to incorporate into your character drawings.

Dont sweat it, thoughthis time were going to learn the very basics of how to draw a nose using anime and manga styles as the references!

Construction Of Anime Girl Head

anime poses

We need a solid method of construction of the human head before we can understand how to draw an Anime/Magna head or face.

Trust me when I tell you that all, yes all great Manga artists know how to draw a realistic human head. Whats more, they know how to draw it really, really well. Do not skip learning anatomy and construction of the face and try not to dive right into drawing in the Anime style, before understanding the basics of construction.

Luckily, there is an incredibly powerful method for the construction of the face that we can learn and practice developed by Andrew Loomis. I published a detailed tutorial on the Loomis method and you can find it at this link.

Basically, the method evolves drawing a sphere to represent the top portion of the head, then drawing in the jaw and other features based on predetermined landmarks and proportions. It is a great starting point for drawing the face. Check out the tutorial above.

Later on this page, I will walk you step-by-step through how I use the method to draw an Anime girl face.

Draw Nose And Forehead

Next, we start to draw the nose and the forehead. I dont have any exact measures of how or where you start the bridge of the nose and forehead, but you can always correct the lines later on if a feature seems out of place.

Also, draw the eyebrows just to give the character mood or emotion. If you draw the eyebrow a bit downward, it will make the character look angrier, for example, and if you draw it pointing to the up, it will make your character look surprised. So do think about these when drawing the eyebrows.

Then I start to draw the bridge of the nose going slightly outward. Remember, you can always correct the lines, later on, so dont be afraid of making mistakes.

Also, there are no clear rules on what way to draw the bridge of the nose. Usually, however, it should go down and forward rather than up and inward

How To Draw A Nose With Just Lines

Lets start with the basic. With the anime/manga style, you can simply draw a nose by making a dot or a dash! Even though it may be the most basic nose for the front view, you have to consider proper placement of the nose.

First, make a guideline by vertically and horizontally dividing the head in half. For the vertical positioning draw this type of nose directly in the middle of the head. For the horizontal position draw it between the horizontal halfway point and the chin.

Depending on the character you want to draw, you can place the nose slightly higher or lower based on style and the type of character you want to create but generally try and keep it close to the area described above.

Now lets learn how to draw a nose from the side view. Beginners often mistake the placement of the facial features when drawing a character especially from this view, so make sure to stick to the vertical placement of the nose as described earlier.

This view is no doubt harder for beginners to have a clear placement guide for the horizontal positioning of the nose. How the nose drawn is usually affected by the face type, nose length, and style, so always do some research and observations on human facial parts even if youre learning anime/manga drawing style.;

Generally, you will want to draw the nose sticking out past the forehead. Make the actual shape of the nose somewhat like a vertical checkmark with a short bottom curve, a pointy tip, and a long upper curve.;

Start With A Simple Shirt

Anime clothes drawing will vary depending on how youd like your character to be dressed. For beginners, a simple shirt design is the easiest starting point.;

Around the neck of your character, draw sloping lines downwards and around the neck, leaving a small gap in the middle, to create an open-collar shirt.;

Start with the shirt collar before working on the sleeves or details.

Along the arms, add a light line in the middle where the elbow crease would be, with two slightly curved lines around the wrists for the ends of the sleeves. From here, you can draw a line straight down from the open collar to the waist, leaving an upside down V shape at the bottom. Draw two lines from either side of the hips in to meet the bottom of the V shape to form the ends of the shirt. A few dots up the centerline will give you the buttons.

Buttons and crease lines help to make your clothing appear more realistic.
