This approach is not originally mine. I got this from a guy in the show called Art Attack years ago. As I recall, his name is Neil Buchanan, and he speaks in a heavy English accent . To his fans, the guy is now a rock star, and he stopped hosting the show years ago.

Anyway, when doing human figures, he suggested doing the eggs and sausages method. Basically, you will draw a series of eggs and sausage shapes as a rough draft. The sausages are for limbs like arms and legs. The eggs are for the torso and head. The great thing about this approach is that you could do awkward poses with it.

Now I did my own twist as I found out that I could control the pose better by starting with the wire figure. And when you are sure on the pose, it could save me from erasures. I mean it is easier to clean lines than circles when you are not happy with the pose.

Start by drawing lines. Three similar ones and a really long one

Now, youre going to draw all the sketches of each part of the body.

Starting at the head: make a circle with a triangle at the bottom.

For the torso: make a rectangle, followed by sausages for the arms . And another two structures for the fists.

Make a rectangle for the hips, and sausages for legs, followed by shapes for the feet. Mark the main joints.

Once finished, follow all the main lines for the Lineart. Try to give movement. After all, its a moving action.

After finished, erase your sketch. Add details such as bone structures and shadows for better results.

Draw The Facial Features

Eyes below the horizontal halfway point of the head
Nose halfway between the top of the eyes and the bottom of the chin
Mouth halfway between chin and bottom of nose for bottom lip with top lip slightly above
Ears between the top of the eyes an the bottom of the nose

Its important to note that the proportions given above are based on the center line for all of the facial features . The reason to be aware of this is that the parts of the face that are closer to the viewer should be drawn slightly larger than the parts that are away. This is due to perspective.

Also keep in mind that the far eye, eyebrow, and side of the lips should be drawn vertically shorter than their closer counterparts. This is both due to them being smaller because of perspective and because of the curve of the head. The far eye, eyebrow and side of the lips will curve away from the viewer and should be drawn vertically compressed. The more the face is turned from the viewer the more compressed you should draw the far side facial features.

Draw the ear about as tall as a quarter of the face positioned between the top of the eyes and the bottom of the nose.

Drawing An Anime Head And Face

1Draw an oval and divide it into 4 sections. This will be the basic outline of your anime characters head. The proportions dont have to be exact, but make the oval narrower at the bottom since that will be the chin. Once youve drawn the oval, draw a horizontal line through the center of it. Then, draw a vertical line through the center of it that intersects with the horizontal line. Later, you’ll use these lines as guides to draw the facial features.XResearch source

If you want your character to have a wider face, widen the bottom of the oval so its just slightly narrower than the top. Or, if you want your character to have a slender face, make the bottom of the oval even narrower than the top. There’s no single head shape used for all anime characters, so you can experiment until you find one you like.
