Tip : Figure Out The Flow Of Your Clothes

Tips for Drawing Poses | My Pose Drawing Process

Your characters clothes should be affected by the movement of the character themselves and if theres any wind that you want to be occurring. When the body is stretched to one side, the flow of the clothes will most likely go towards the side that is squished.

However, this can change if theres supposed to be stronger wind coming from another direction, such as the character running or if its just windy in the area theyre in. Keep in mind as well that wind and gravity will also affect the characters hair, and will usually flow in the same direction as the clothing if its longer!

There we have it! Remember to keep these tips in mind the next time you draw an anime pose, so that youll never have to worry about stiff posing again! Feel free to take these tips and apply them to your own art style as well, exaggerate even further if you have a more cartoony style, or reel back a bit if your style is a little more realistic. Shoulder And Hip Lines

As symmetrical as we humans are built, I could not say the same about our poses. Humans like to stand up, sit down, and run in all kinds of forms. Our shoulders and waist are constantly twisting, turning, and leaning so why don’t we take that into consideration? Creating two lines that represent the angle of our shoulders and torsos, and angling them differently from each other can create asymmetical posing which will result in much more humanity and life within our character. It’s rare for us to have our shoulders and hips to be angled the same. Imagine you had lines that go through your shoulders and hips. If you monitor yourself moving, you will find out that these two lines are rarely parallel.

Tip : Focus On Your Line Of Action

Your line of action is also known as gesture. While both of these poses are of the figure just standing there, the one on the right has far more visual interest because their line of action is more curved and fluid. The figure on the left has an almost mirrored pose, while the figure on the right has far more movement throughout their body. Keep this in mind while illustrating your poses!

Tools For Drawing Manga Characters

There is no reason to prefer paper over digital when drawing anime or manga. You can get prepared paper storyboards or templates for Photoshop or CorelDraw. If you are drawing digitally, make sure you have a good tablet – a higher-end Wacom, for example, though you dont have to go for their professional line if you are just starting out.

As a beginner, you will need:

  • Paper.
  • Pencil. Its better to go for softer pencils that are easy to erase.
  • Eraser. A kneadable eraser is best; try an electric eraser if you tend to make heavy lines.

Thats it. As you advance, you will want to invest in good ink , brushes or ink pens, and Copic markers . If you are digital, a good series of greyscale tools ;can be useful if you want to draw traditional manga comic books.

How To Draw Less Stiff Poses

Sword poses

For greater realism, poses shouldnt be stiff.

Learning to draw a natural pose takes some observation and practice. To be able to draw fluid, less stiff poses, its important to understand natural ranges of human movement. If any part of the anatomy youre drawing just looks off, as if it is too stiff, theres a high chance youre drawing a pose that isnt physically possible.

Drawing from observation is a good way to learn about these natural ranges. If youre only drawing from cartoon models or other artists drawings, you wont so easily learn where the limits lie.

Another way of preventing stiffness is by carefully observing muscular and skeletal structure. Thats one reason why its important to learn the basics of anatomy drawing before diving into more complex poses.
