Anime Expo 201: Viz Media Announces Nier: Automata And Junji Ito Novel Collections
Anime Expo 2018 just wrapped up over the weekend, and it brought us an exciting update on NieR: Automata: Short Story Long.
Viz Media announced it will be translating the short story collection into English, so fans can enjoy the characters both in book and video game form.
NieR: Automata: Short Story Long will be coming out in English in 2019, and it will include the classic The Flame of Prometheus along with A Much Too Silent Sea, original tales of Automata II, and more. This collection will be written by Jun Eishima and Yoko Taro.
Alongside this update, Viz Media also announced a Junji Ito story collection. Fans of Itos work in the horror genre of manga would get 13 tales in the new hardcover collection, which is schedules for publication next year.
With Banana Fish now an anime, Viz Media decided to reprint the entire manga series. Banana Fish by Akimi Yoshida consists of 19 volumes, and its about a New York teenage gang leader.
Viz Media ended its series of Anime Expo 2018 announcements with news of acquiring Megalobox. Itâs an anime series about boxing that commemorates the 50th anniversary of Ashita no Joes manga. On Twitter, Viz Media showed off the official English trailer for the series.

Writing And Character Design
The stories of the original game’s characters were written by Yoko, Shiba and Iwasaki, while the main game script was written by Sawako Natori, who would go on to co-write the main scenarios for future Drakengard games. Yoko designed the darker elements to both contrast and actively compete with the likes of and . Yoko conceived the “insane” characters around the premise that people who killed hundreds of people in pursuit of their goals and took satisfaction from it were naturally insane. During the production of Nier, his focus changed to writing a story where everyone believed they were in the right whatever their actions. Through the series, Yoko has also been attempting to answer the question of why people are driven to kill. Although some of the dark narrative themes were kept for Drakengard 2, many of the other narrative elements were made more mainstream.Drakengard 3 was intended to return to a dark aesthetic, but also to include moments of humor and tie in with Nier.

participated in a Saturday panel at PAX East in which they answered questions about the possible continuation of the series.
Responding to a social media question about whether the staff are planning to continue the NieR: Automata series, Saito commented that the NieR series, but “not really” NieR: Automata, has “about 50%” chance of continuing. He later clarified that it would depend on whether Yoko Taro would want to do another game.
Yoko Taro said, “I don’t really like creating sequels; especially because I feel that the storyline of NieR: Automata is complete in itself, I don’t really want to continue that storyline.” He joked that, instead, he could turn the Android characters into bugs and make a bug fighting game next.
Near the end of the panel, also thanked fans for their support and said, “With this, we might be able to open another door in the NieR universe.” He mentioned he does not know how long it will take, but he wants everyone to look forward to it.

This Nier: Automata Anime Clip Will Make You Wish For A Real Anime Series
Yoko Taros NieR: Automata grasped the heart of many thanks to its masterful gameplay, its eerie story, and the unstoppable charisma of its protagonist YoRHa 2B.
Could it work as an anime series? Nagoya-based animator Shiika Sadamasa seems to think so, and in fact he took upon himself to create a proof of concept.
The video below is brief, but it certainly shows that 2B would be as charming in 2D form as she is in her original 3D appearance.
Sadamasa-san also posted a few work-in-progress pictures and animated GIFs , and its quite impressive to see the level of detail gone into each key frame.
If this doesnt make you want a NieR: Automata anime series, I dont know what will.

No. Nier Automata work so well because they are games.
However they are full of supplementary material like novels, concerts, stage plays, even manga. I don’t see why an anime would be such a bad idea. Obviously it doesn’t have to adapt the whole story.
Something like Final Fantasy Brotherhood episodes that supplement the main story, like the Memory Cage & Memory Thorn, Pearl Harbour Descent, even the creation of YoRHa would be wonderful
The anime short was already posted but this news article perked my interest. The possibility of even a fan made anime for Automata would be wonderful! We have all the voices from 2B, 9S, A2 ingame that could be used in a fan made anime. Or maybe Square can actually be persuaded to do a real anime movie of Nier like they did for FFVII. Even FGO got made into an anime series based on popularity so couldn’t Automata do the same? 2B would look great! 🙂
Anime would be hard to bring the essence of Nier automata into audience. At least not work so well as video game. But the pre sequel story of A2 may be very suitable for it.
BTW, the visual novel Umineko and its anime adaptation have a somewhat similar format to Nier and Automata.
The “same” story is repeated several times. It always starts the same way, but with each iteration there are additional characters, new information, and progressively crazier plot branches.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba stands its own on this list because of the relationship at the core of the series: that of Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko. Much like the protagonist in NieR Replicant ver.1.22, Tanjiro is looking to cure his sister of a mysterious ailment he seeks to prevent.
And Tanjiro will do everything he can to protect Nezukoand vice versa. In NieR Replicant ver.1.22, theres a similar dynamic. Both protagonists are young and inexperienced at first, but as they grow and their stories progress, they become more powerful and confident in themselves.
Not to mention, both of these series have strong villains, and both protagonists are absolutely skilled with swords. If you enjoy the bombastic boss fights of NieR, then Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is your obvious next watch.

Versions And Additional Content
The game released in Japan on February 23, 2017. A limited Black Box Collector’s Edition was created, featuring the game, a figurine of 2B, a special release of the Nier: Automata live concert, an artbook, a download code for a special item, and a prequel novella. The novella, which retells the events of Nier from the perspectives of characters Devola and Popola, was written by Jun Eishima, a regular collaborator for supplementary material related to the Drakengard series, in collaboration with Yoko. In addition, Square Enix collaborated with Japanese rock band Amazarashi to produce a new single, “Inochi ni Fusawashii”, inspired by the game’s world. Amazarashi’s lead singer Hiromu Akita was a fan of Nier, facilitating the promotion. The music video for “Inochi ni Fusawashii” was supervised by Yoko.
In the West, the PS4 version released in North America on March 7, and in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand on March 10. In addition to the standard version, there was a Day One edition that featured reversible cover art featuring artwork by Yoshida, and a version of the Black Box Collector’s Edition featuring the Day One edition with added accessory content, the 2B figurine, an artbook, and a 13-track soundtrack including tracks from both Nier and the earlier Drakengard games.
