Make Light Line Drawings First
Draw with light lines first, then trace over with darker lines once you are sure everything is in place. This is particularly useful for large or more complex drawings.
Clear lines are easier to erase when you make a mistake and easier to do .
Even if youre drawing digitally, its a good idea to sketch first and then go over it with lighter lines.
Drawing your own lines is also another exercise to stabilize your hand.
Try to draw with as few lines as possible. If you make a mistake with your first line, you can add more lines until you get the correct one. However, dont scribble or draw extra lines just to accomplish this. If you make too many mistakes, erase that part of your drawing and start over.
Learn How To Shade Anime Drawings
Shading can make two-dimensional objects look three dimensional. Proper shading will need some study and thought.
Youll have to see where the light reflects off of different objects in different lighting conditions. Environment, time of day, light source, and whether all affect how shading will look.
Like with perspective drawing, practice this by drawing simple objects and practicing shading techniques. Youll begin to get an almost intuitive sense of how shading works.

Materials You Will Need To Draw Manga
Obviously, choosing to do your drawings on a digital platform is not the most affordable, especially in the beginning. That said, once you have made the initial purchase of a graphics tablet and the appropriate software, you will not need any other tools! In particular, there will be no purchasing of costly art supplies! You will also have the awesome advantage of being able to correct any silly errors or mistakes much more easily than if you were using a pen and paper.
Of course, using a drawing tablet takes practice, just like regular drawing does! So be patient and keep practicing.
How To Draw An Anime Body
The first thing youll need to do is outline the characters body proportions. You can make your character as tall or short as you need them to be. The character in this tutorial is going to be about six and a half heads tall.
When drawing the arms, make sure they fall horizontally at the bodys midpoint. The distance between the shoulder and the elbow should be the same length as the area between the elbow and the hand joint.
Remember, the legs should be half the length of the characters body. Ensure that the area from the bodys midpoint to the knee is equal to the distance between the length of the knee to the bottom of the foot.
Once youre done with the proportions, you can start drawing from the head as you work your way down to the rest of the body. Dont focus on the small details; you can start with a light and draw them later on.

Face Proportions For An Anime Character
The base character drawing proportions used in this tutorial are shown in the illustration above. If youve seen some of the other tutorials here on AnimeOutline you may already be aware of these.
If not the proportions are as follows:
- Eyes draw a horizontal line directly through the middle of the head and draw the eyes below that line
- Ears make a second horizontal line between the halfway line and the chin and draw the ears between those two lines
- Nose above the line used for the bottom of the ears
- Mouth draw a line between the bottom of ears/nose line to get the position of the bottom lip and draw the mouth just slightly above that
You can draw the eyebrows and eyelids slightly above the eyes.
Please keep in mind that the size and position of the facial features in the examples below will change based on character type and facial expressions.
Also be aware that these are only suggested proportions for making a character look anime. Different anime styles can still have different proportions.

Learn How To Color Anime Drawings
Effective use of color is quite simple, really: simply apply what you know about the color wheel.
Warm colors, cool colors, contrasting colorsexperiment with them to get the effects you want. Warm colors convey heat, danger, and passion. They tend to be very dramatic.
Cool colors are calmer and often used for water or ice. However, depending on whats around them, the feeling can change.
Contrasting colors, for instance, always draw the eye. Always be mindful of anyone who might be viewing your art and what mood or action you want to convey.

Add The Facial Features
Draw two circles on the center guideline but leave a small opening at the bottom of each; these will be your eyes. When youre drawing anime, the eyes are one of the most important features and are usually much bigger than the other facial features. Sketch in an arch over the top of each circle and a curved line around the far side of each to frame the eyes.;
From here you can also add in a small V shape on the center guideline for the nose, a slightly curved line for a smiling mouth, and a couple of short and light pencil strokes underneath the eyes for a blushing effect.
Adding the facial features starts to bring your character to life.
