How To Draw An Anime Girls Head And Face

This tutorial explains how to draw a an anime or manga girls head head and face from the front and side views.

Before you begin drawing its a good idea to outline the defining features of the anime style.

Most female anime characters tend to have big eyes, a small mouth, nose and chin and a fairly round face. The lips are usually either very lightly defined or not drawn at all. The hair is usually drawn in clumps instead of individual strands and often tends to have a somewhat spiky look.

If drawing using pencil and paper be sure to make very light lines for the initial parts of the tutorial as you will need to erase some parts later.

Female And Male Facial Differences

Because the cartoon style simplifies facial features, the difference between females and males can get blurry. That’s why feminine features get exaggerated:

  • The eyes are big, round, and low in the face.
  • The nose is small and not too visible.
  • The eyebrows are thin and high.
  • The lips are big.
  • The neck is thin.
  • The face is oval.

This is a general recipe for a cartoon female. However, it’s not necessary to stick to all these elements. On the contrary, drawing every female this way will inevitably lead to the same-face syndromea popular issue where every character looks like the same one, just in different clothes and with different hairstyles.

The easiest way to solve it is to mix the feminine features with masculine onesafter all, that’s how it works in the real world. Some facial features are called feminine not because they only appear in females, but because that’s what’s traditionally associated with females. Different cultures may have different ideas of feminine facial features, so you’re not doing anything wrong by adding masculine lips to a female character.

When drawing the front view of the nose you can show it as two vertical lines. The little gap between these will indicate the tip. Make a shorter line for the bottom part of the nose and a longer one above it.

[ Minnoao ] How to draw a female anime face

No matter what angle you choose to draw your anime characters face, some basic guidelines help. A well known, professional anime/manga artist, Lizbeth R. Jimenez My Mangaka Life explained the useful guidelines for sketching the perfect anime face.

These guidelines allow you to draw the whole face in a symmetrical pattern. Moreover, when you use the guidelines to draw, you can draw any anime face irrespective of age and gender.

Also, the guidelines help you with almost all the face shapes. So without further ado, lets discuss what these guidelines are. Whether you are drawing a male or female anime face, start by drawing a circle followed by an oval down the circle. The oval will be for shaping the jawline.

The next step is to draw a vertical line in the centre of the face down the chin. This is the trick for getting the symmetrical face sides Use the half, half, and half rule, i.e., to draw three horizontal lines, each one for eyes, nose, and mouth.

Another trick to get the eyes right is to draw two ovals and an imaginary third eye to get the right distance. To draw the mouth, keep in mind that each lip corner comes under the middle of the eye.

Now connect the lines together so it looks natural or realistic

Erase the head part so it’s not seen and it’ll look like the person has more or thicker hair

Do the same on the other side

At the end of my bangs I curved my bang inwards

I drew a bun so my person has a casual bun

I made roots at the top as a guide so I know where the hair will fall

Shade/color in the hair

Do the same for a bun

I don’t the shape of my head so I’m gonna erase the chin part

When I’m done with the hair I’m gonna work on the face I started for the brows. The brows help me find and place the eyes, and I think that your brows frame your face

Now do the eyes basically draw a big circle in the left corner and then a small black circle at the south west of the circle. Then shade in the side of it to your preference.

Anime is a popular style of Japanese animation used in cartoons. This characteristic art style emerged in the 1960s, both in cartoon anime and the related comic book manga. Its popularity increased markedly during the 1990s and still continues to grow.

Anime characters typically have large, expressive eyes, and extreme emotions are commonly displayed. Loss, death, unrequited love, and betrayal are popular themes, especially in series aimed at adults rather than children. As such, sad characters such as the one in this drawing guide are a staple in many anime.

Today, over 400 studios produce anime, and others have adopted the style outside of Japan. More than half of the world’s animated television shows are considered anime.

Part 3 Of 3: Cleaning Up And Finishing The Drawing

  • 1Erase the guidelines to clean up your drawing. Use either the eraser on your pencil or a block eraser to lift up any guide lines that arent a part of the characters face or head. Carefully work around any of the facial features youve drawn so you dont erase their lines too much. Continue erasing the rest of the guides on your drawing until all thats left is the face.XResearch source
  • If you drew your guide lines too dark, then they may not fully erase off of the paper.
  • Use a thin eraser to get in detailed areas, like the eyes or ears.
  • 2Give your character a fun hairstyle. Anime and manga characters can have a variety of hairstyles, so choose one that you think will look best on your character. Avoid drawing every single strand of hair and instead sketch the basic shape of the style onto your character. Work lightly in pencil so you can erase and make changes if you need to. Once you have a roughed-in shape for the hairstyle, erase any parts of the head that the hair covers so its not visible.XResearch source
  • Anime or manga hair is usually broken up into clumps that end in a point. Look at hairstyles of various characters to get ideas of how to style your characters hair.
  • Tip: Practice drawing different hairstyles on a piece of tracing paper over your drawing so you dont have to erase your character if you dont like the style you drew.

  • You dont have to add any additional details to your character if you dont want to.
  • Adding In Facial Features

    Firstly, add the ears. From top to bottom they should go from the eye line to the nose line. Add in the nose, which can be of any shape but it must just touch the bottom of your horizontal nose line.;

NOTE: To help with how big to make the eyes, the eye guideline from ear to ear should be roughly five eyes wide. This means that your eyes should have an eyes length that separates them in the middle.

The eyebrows require simple curved lines above the eyes and the placement doesnt really matter too much, they just need to follow the placement of the eyes. You can experiment with different shapes and placement to portray various different emotions.

Lastly, draw the mouth line halfway between the bottom of the nose guideline and the bottom of the lip line.

That’s the proportions sorted, now let’s make it Manga…

    Make Light Line Drawings First

Draw using light lines first and then trace over them with darker lines once you are sure that everything is in the right place. This be especially helpful for large or more complex drawings.

Light lines are easier to erase if you make a mistake and easier to make .

Even if drawing digitally its still a good idea to first make a sketch and go over it with cleaner lines afterwards.

Tracing your own lines will also work as another exercise to help steady your hand.

Try and draw with as few lines as possible. If you make a mistake with your first line its fine to add more lines until you land the correct one but dont scribble or draw extra lines just for the sake of it. If you make too many mistakes erase that part of your drawing start over.

Drawing Anime Head Using Three Division Method

There is more than one way to draw anime faces. One such method is to divide the head into three parts illustrated by Robert Marzullo. This method can be used to demonstrate the face from any angle. Furthermore, this technique can be used to draw a pencil as well as digital anime art.

Just like most of the methods, the three-part method also uses a rough circle. The trick to get the perfect anime face anatomy is to divide it into three parts, both horizontally and vertically. While drawing the anime character using this technique, keep one thing that you dont have to be perfect.

Extend the middle vertical line down the circle. By doing this, you will get three sections one for eyes, one for nose & mouth, and the last one for the jawline. The top line will also act as the hairline for the head.

Outline the head and cheekbones, attaching them to the jawline. You can also divide the bottom section into three sub-sections as well for the lower facial features. With some slight changes, you can easily draw the male/female anime face from any angle.
