  • They Learn New Things Often

While there are Chinese and Korean anime-like shows, a typical anime is Japanese. Anime fans come from all corners of the globe, so for anyone not Japanese, anime can actually be rather educational.

You learn a little bit about Japanese culture regardless of what anime you are watching, and if you watch the subbed versions of anime , you can also learn phrases and single words in Japanese.

    They Explore Meaningful Concepts Regularly

Despite the rather unrealistic nature of most anime, many shows teach viewers a lesson or explore at least one major thematic issue central to human existence. For example, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood explores the themes of kinship, death and corruption. Sword Art Online explores how we construct our perceptions of reality and what makes one reality the true one.

Death March To The Parallel World Rhapsody

    • Japanese title: Death March kara Hajimaru Isekai Kyousoukyoku

Rather than a player, Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody teleports a programmer into a world inspired by the video games he worked on. This change only impacts the anime’s backstory because the end result is another overpowered protagonist who has a habit of collecting women as party members.

These types of series are a dime-a-dozen in the isekai genre, and with good reason. They are the ultimate escapist fantasies and typically revolve around central characters designed to serve as surrogates for viewers. Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody is an example of a stereotypical isekai anime.

    Theyre Comfortable With Being Weird

Unless you also watch anime, you probably think anime nerds are a little bit weird.

Thats okay, we kind of understand because very few of us were born watching anime. Most of us also thought it was weird at one point or another so, in a way, we can sympathize with you.

Anime nerds are used to being called weird and many of us are actually much more comfortable with ourselves because of it.

Haganai: I Dont Have Many Friends

The main theme is all in the title. But besides that:

    • Bullying is also a highlight of Haganai.
    • The awkwardness of making friends, meeting new people and loneliness.
    • Being mis-judged based on how you look, and how you deal with that personally.

Theres also a couple more meaningful elements expressed throughout Haganai.

And thats what makes this school/slice of life series stand out among others.

In An Old House In Paris That Was Covered In Vines

    Which Anime Character Are You?

I had to pick a stopping point, so the Old House In Paris is it. I own one of these houses and have many of the dolls and furnishings. The book was a favorite from childhood. The movies jadore! I love that spunky sprite Madeline. So when I came across this dollhouse sitting in a consignment store, I was stunned. They do not sell these in the United States, so I had not seen or heard of them. And Im an adult and have long stopped watching Madelines adventures.

But because I had started reading the books to my daughter, I couldnt resist bringing this dollhouse into my home with as many of Madelines friends as I could find on Ebay! I think I might enjoy it more than my kid, and I do get excited when I find an item here or there. The doorbell works. The lantern lights up. I can get plenty of accessories. And I even have Miss Clavel. And one day Ill get Genevieve the dog! .FOR MY GRANDCHILDREN.of course!

Hunter X Hunter Greed Island Arc

Hunter x Hunter is not an isekai anime, but it does make a detour into a game for a single saga. The Greed Island arc is named after a game designed by Ging Freecss, Gon’s father, and it is limited to only Nen users. Hunters are physically taken into the game’s deadly world, with the ultimate goal being to collect 100 restricted cards.

Greed Island is not generally regarded as one of Hunter x Hunter‘s strongest storylines, mainly because it is sidelined by two of the anime’s greatest arcs and feels somewhat like a side-quest. That said, it does progress Gon’s plot to find Ging, works as a training arc for the two leads, and provides a break from the anime’s often dark tone.

The 2000s: Computers And A Bubble

Can You Guess What Happens Next In These Crazy Anime Scenes? (BEASTARS, Kakegurui & More!)

Since the mid-1930s, anime had been almost exclusively animated on cels. During the 90s, CGI became increasingly commonplace as a supplemental technique. The ease with which computers could manipulate images even won over traditional-animation purist Miyazaki, who used CGI on 1997s Mononoke-Hime to animate demonic tendrils and a few other effects after his staff demonstrated how seamlessly they could blend the animation in.

The first completely computer animated anime, A.LI.CE., arrived in 1999. Being still relatively early CGI, it didnt look like anime, and by this point in time the anime look we associate with the genre was very clearly defined. As more and more studios began making use of the new digital technology, most of them chose methods that blended well with hand-drawn cels. As computer processing capacity increased and prices went down, studios replaced cels altogether with digital ink and paint. In this method, after each frame is drawn it is scanned into a computer, then colored and composited digitally instead of being transferred to a cel and colored and composited by hand.

Being able to use a computer to quickly handle tedious work was, unsurprisingly, popular, and most studios had made the switch as soon as 2005. The last hold-out was Eiken with Sazae-san, the longest-running animated show in the world. If it aint broke , why fix it? But even Sazae-san eventually bowed to modern convenience and made the digital switch in 2013.

Watamote is a slice of life anime focused on a lonely introverted girl.

    Why this show is meaningful:

    • Not having any friends is tough as a teenager with anxiety.
    • Not being able to socialize with others makes your life lonely and awkward.
    • A lack of self confidence makes life 100X more problematic and difficult.
    • Despite these elements of Watamote, the importance of never giving up is key.

These are the main themes running throughout Watamote.

I cant help but feel for Tomoko Kuroki. Because there are people like her in real life.

    Plus as an

series filled with sadness, immorality, and strong themes.

More reasons why this anime reflects real life:

    • Child abuse. Yes, this is a real and horrible thing thats show in Elfen Lied.
    • Running away from home. This is a result of the last point.
    • Abuse towards animals. Again, this is horrible and wicked down to the core.
    • Some people are born into cruel circumstances, for no fault of their own.
    • Though the experiences in Elfen Lied are superficial, its still real and relatable.

Despite the immense gore and colorful language in Elfen Lied, the underlying theme is authentic.

    An Anime History Book

Fans may know anime is an important part of pop culture, and they may know animation techniques are constantly evolving, but if they want to know the historical process behind the phenomenon, consider giving them “Anime: A History.”

“Interpreting Anime” is another fascinating piece of scholarship which performs close readings and cultural analysis of different anime through various lenses, such as film, queer, political, and postmodern theory. A major thematic thread running through the work is anime’s ability to pull people into imagined, fantastical storylines, yet still hold a mirror to the viewers’ real world. All the while, the book analyzes how anime’s reflective quality compares to that across other storytelling mediums.

Either of these books are must-haves for anyone who loves history, theory and of course anime.

    How Long Can It Last

Anime Series Re:ZERO â Starting Life In Another World ...

This will go on until you die. So technically, this might not even be considered much different than living your life normally except for the fact that youd be trying to live like your favorite anime protagonist instead of whatever average person you are now. I know this sounds like bringing the fantasy into reality but if something terrible hasnt happened yet, then theres nothing stopping you from doing what you want. Have fun with it! There is only one thing that I need to tell you to be careful of. If something terrible does happen, then it would be the same as another person dying and then spending their life pretending to be that other person or putting that persons face on themselves because now they are dead.

It might not be much different if your character dies for good so you have to make sure that your character isnt going to die anytime soon. If there is no way for them to die, then there really is no limit as long as you dont mind how weird others think you look or act. Youll find yourself changing back into your old self after awhile but until then, enjoy living like an anime protagonist!

    Grimgar: Ashes And Illusions

    • Japanese title: Hai to Gensou no Grimgar

Most isekai anime lack tension since they feature practically invulnerable main characters, even if they are set in worlds with permadeath. Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions remedies this by pushing a collective to the forefront rather than an individual.

    RELATED: Longest Visual Novels
