Today, media in the style of anime are created all over the world. Some people only categorize Japanese productions as anime, while others refer to any animations that use this visual style as anime, regardless of where they were produced.
The word anime has an interesting backstory. The Japanese animshiyon is a loanword from the English animation, which eventually made its way back to English as anime. Essentially, Japanese borrowed a word from English, and then English borrowed it back.

Sanji Takes Up Smoking
Sanji’s iconic look of the suit jacket and slacks is most often punctuated by a cigarette lazily dangling from between his lips. It’s almost a signature to the character with how often he lights up during and after the various trials of the crew.
Sanji took up smoking, initially, to be more mature, as revealed in chapter 68 of the manga. This happens shortly after Zeff and Sanji start the Baratie. Naturally, this was censored in the anime.
Carla’s Death Is More Graphic In The Manga
Most would think the anime would be more graphic than the manga. In the case of Carla’s death in Attack on Titan, it was the manga that went the extra mile. In the anime, the titan kills Carla before eating her. Its large hands block the killing action and we do not see the whole unfortunate process.
In the manga, though, we see it squeeze poor Carla to death and watch it eat with Carla’s legs dangling out of its mouth and everything. Yikes.

Kaworu And Shinji’s Relationship
One of the biggest plot arcs in Neon Genesis Evangelion happens near the end of the series. In both version, Kowaru is introduced as a new student admitted to Shinji’s school. Kowaru is strange and uncannily similar to Rei in many ways, although much more reflective and chatty. Kowaru and Shinji quickly become friends as the Third Child seems intrigued by Kowaru’s peculiarity.

As it turns out, though, Kowaru is revealed to be the final angel, forcing Shinji to kill his newfound friend before the Adamite can destroy Central Dogma. In the comic, however, Kowaru is introduced much earlier and shown murdering a kitten. In fact, Shinji doesn’t even like Kowaru at first and actively keeps away his distance. Eventually, the two do become friends and the rest plays out the same as the TV show.
Does It Matter Which Series Someone Starts With
Both series are excellent, so much so that comparing them is somewhat of a nitpick. Both are beautifully animated by studio Bones and share the same voice casts. Both plots are highly engrossing and give the audience a ton of food for thought in between gorgeously animated fight scenes. So does it matter which series a person starts with? Not really, but that ultimately comes down to personal preference. Just like Al and Ed searching for the Philosophers Stone, audiences are bound to enjoy and grow from the journey regardless.

Ymir’s Backstory Is Revealed Earlier In The Anime
For those that did not read the manga, Ymir’s backstory was very confusing. We did not yet know anything about the society beyond the walls. We did not know that people were turned into titans for punishment in that society. Despite not having any exposition for the society Ymir came from, the anime went ahead and had Ymir’s story get told.
In the manga, her backstory was not revealed for a long time. Fans have theorized that this is so Ymir’s love for Historia would make more sense in the show.

In the anime during Annie and Eren’s epic final titan fight, Eren slowly gets the upper hand on her until she crystallizes. In the manga, though, this is not quite how the fight goes. Instead, Annie utterly rules the fight and Eren does not get any taste of victory. It’s not until Mikasa steps in and then the entire Survey Corp tries to take Annie out when Annie crystallizes.
So while this fight was different, the first one between titan Eren and Annie remained pretty similar between the manga and anime. It may have changed just to show Eren developing as a fighter.
Popular Manhwa Titles And Themes
Some of the biggest manhwa at the moment include titles such as Solo Leveling, Tower of God, The God of High School and Noblesse. Most of these and other popular manhwa would be classified as shonen if they were manga, focusing on action and adventure as well as young, predominately male protagonists. Concepts such as traveling through different realms and fighting interdimensional demons and monsters are also common, as are the heroes powering up and becoming stronger to face these inhuman threats.
There’s notably a lot less genre classification in manhwa, with books that would be deemed shonen, seinen or shojo being independent of such sobriquets. This can make the books on occasion seem more experimental than their Japanese counterparts, especially since the art styles in many of the adventure titles don’t match stereotypical shonen art. The many romance titles are even glossier in comparison, having art styles that match romance mobile games targeted more toward adult women than young girls. Adventures based around MMORPGs are also common, not unlike that of the isekai craze in Japanese manga and anime.
Those who’ve become fond of supernatural manga such as Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and other titles will definitely enjoy Solo Leveling and Tower of God, and with manhwa and Korean media in general becoming increasingly popular in the West, even more titles are sure to hit book stores in the coming months.

Manga Can Be More Original
Manga is considered by some to be more artistically original than anime, much the same as books are to films. This is because most mangaka write only original content and many start by self-publishing. In fact, self-published works, or doujinshi, are incredibly popular. Unlike manga, lots of anime are based pre-existing stories. This is because it’s cheaper to adapt an existing work than it is to create a completely original storyline. Additionally, adaptations are assumed to be a safer investment as the original work will already have a following.
