How Big Should Anime Eyes Be

How to Draw Semi Realistic Anime: Portrait Process Explained in Voiceover Dtiys Speedpaint Tutorial

One defining feature of anime eyes is that they are usually much bigger and wider than real eyes so that is how we will draw them. The eyes should be far enough apart that you can fit a third eye in between. For a normal expression draw the iris slightly covered by the top eyelid while just touching the bottom eyelid.

How Do You Color Anime Eyes

Laying down base colors Using fill tools, fill in the inside of the eye. As this is just the base, dont worry about shades. Focus on making sure that there are no gaps between the line art and the fill color. Use the eraser tool if the paint goes outside the line, and use the pen tool if there are small gaps.

Is Spongebob Considered Anime

Since its appearance on Nickelodeon in 1999, the series is going strong with absolutely no signs of stopping. So its no wonder that the show piqued interest enough in the mainstream for it to become an anime as well. But unlike official adaptations, the SpongeBob SquarePants anime series comes from an ardent fan.

How Do You Draw Semi Realism Eyes

How to draw semi-realistic eyes Make a basic outline. Add details. Create a layer under the sketch and fill in with colors. Low opacity of the sketch layer. Add blush under the eye and create an under eyes crease. Put highlights at the corner and under the brow. Use Multiply mode to add shadows on the white of the eye.

Drawing Standard Anime Eyelashes

Semi realistic anime

These are the more common eyelashes with some variation of them seen in most anime and manga where just a few of the individual lashes are shown.

Same as the previous example start by drawing the outline shape of the eyelashes without any of the individual lashes.

Again fill the outline of the eyelashes with black.

Eyelashes generally fan out around the eye so keep this in mind when drawing. Even though you dont need to show the full transition you should still keep the few eyelashes that are shown pointing in generally the right direction for that part of the eye.

As the eyelashes are so small and simple you can shade and draw them at the same time. Add larger eyelashes to the outer top corners of the eyes and smaller ones to the inner corners and bottom eyelids.

Again you can see what the eyes can look like with these types of eyelashes once fully drawn.

How To Digitally Draw: Semi Realistic Anime Hair

Hair is something that artists either love or hate to draw. Some artists love to illustrate the bouncy wefts of cute curls or the ebb and flow of long, straight hair. Other artists find hair to be an absolute nightmare — how do you draw hair so it looks natural and full of life and not like the straw in a haystack? Here are a few tips when it comes to digitally illustrating semi-realistic anime hair!

Not into reading? Dont worry check out instructor Alyssa Wongsos video on How to Paint Semi-Realistic Anime Hair!

Fill In Your Flat Colours First

Before you start to add shadows and highlights, you should fill in a whole flat layer of colour! Digital art allows you to separate different sections of colour into different layers for ease of organization and editing!

Heres a tip: You can change your line art layer type to multiply so that they blend in well with whatever colour your hair ends up being!

Stage 2 Initial Matte Painting

Next you should import an image of a real tree. It is better to use a high-resolution image so all the details especially the trees bark are seen just great.

Once you have imported the pic, activate the Clip to Layer Below option on this layer and place the tree in the way the barks direction and size look natural regarding your drawn shape.

Finishing The Drawing By Applying Shading

How to Draw Semi Realistic Anime Hair (LINELESS)

To finish the drawing you can add some very basic shading.

For very generalized shading with no one clear light source shade the areas most likely to have shadows. These shadows will usually be:

  • Cast by the hair on the forehead area
  • Around the eyelids
  • Upper area of the neck
  • Inner/Background area of the hair

For shading an anime characters face in different lighting conditions see:

Be sure to leave the area of the highlights in the hair white as well as a small highlight area on the lips.

For examples of various kinds of hair highlight see:

Add In Your Highlights

You can use your lasso tool to select certain sections of your hair to fill in the highlights. You can hold shift to select multiple things at once! Using a lighter colour, fill in your selections to create the highlights in your hair!

Heres a tip: You can slightly erase the highlights that are farther away from the light source. Because theyre not as close, they wont be as intense!

Tied/braided Hair Should Be Pulled Back

When drawing tied or braided hair, All the hair starting from your hairline should be pulled back towards where its tied. You dont need to draw every strand, but a few lines to indicate the direction its being pulled towards is enough.

Heres a tip: A braid can be drawn as a bunch of hearts going down a vertical line, with added detail afterwards!

Basic Nose 3/4 View Drawing

For the 3/4 view you can keep the vertical placement of the nose the same as for the front view. The vertical placement of the nose will be the middle of the face. You can roughly estimate where this will be by projecting a line down from the curve of the forehead to the bottom of the chin.

As you are really only drawing the end of the nose position it some distance away from this line so that the empty space leaves enough room to fit the full thing .

You can give a hint of the nose with just two curved lines as shown in the example above. Alternatively you can also only draw the top curve or even just a dot/dash similar to the front view.

For drawing the head in 3/4 view see:

Basic Nose Side View Drawing

Draw anime, manga, semi realistic drawing by Tserush

For the side view again be sure to keep the vertical placement of the nose as described earlier and as shown in the above illustration. A common mistake beginners make is misplacing facial features when drawing the same character from different views.

Its hard to have a clear placement guide for the horizontal positioning of the nose in the side view as this can be effected by the face type, nose length and style. Generally however you will want to draw it sticking out past the forehead.

Make the actual shape of the nose somewhat like a vertical check mark with a short bottom curve, a pointy tip and a long upper curve.

Stage 6 The Magic Of Light

Create a Color Dodge layer and pick some nice and sunny color of some slightly faded yellow, orange or even red shades. Since we are still drawing a fantasy tree, a strong and blurry lighting effect will make it look mystically and majestically. Using a big soft airbrush lay the light on the current main light on the Color Dodge layer weve created. We dont need the selection at this step, the tree should nearly glow with this effect.

Now create two more layers below the Color Dodge one. They should be with Multiply and Add preferences – as on the pic. Take this brush once more and repeat the same texturing process we did in the third stage – the only difference is that there are Add and Multiply layers now instead of the two Multiply back then. We do this to cover the second pic of the tree with the same texture below a bit to make it look more artistic.

Drawing Simple Anime Eyelashes

The most basic types of anime eyelashes are pretty much a solid shapes without any of the individual lashes. Usually these consist of the top and bottom but in some very simplified styles only the top eyelashes may be shown.

Drawing these eyelashes is fairly simple. Start with the outline of their overall shape.

Make the top eyelashes much thicker than the bottom. Be careful not to make the bottom eyelashes too thick or your character may look like they have bags under their eyes or a black eye.

Fill the eyelashes in with black once done with the line drawing.

Above you can see what these types of eyelashes can look like with the eye fully drawing.

    Shaded 3/4 View Drawing

For the 3/4 view you can again place the nose as described in the first example. Positional it horizontally between the halfway point of the head and the bottom of the chin with the vertical placement based on a line projected from the forehead to the chin.

Shade the the bottom part of the nose with a shadow that is wider at the base of the nose and narrower at the tip. Draw the upper part of the nose with a simple curve and keep the tip pointy.

Unlike the basic nose example you can make the the upper curve slightly larger and more defined so that it does not get lost compared to the large shaded area.

Please note that this nose shading applies to general/common lighting conditions. If you want to shade the nose/face in more unusual lighting see:

Draw In The Simple Shapes First

When drawing hair, dont start by drawing every single strand. That can make your hair feel stringy and unkempt, or it can make it look like scarecrow hair! Instead, draw your hair in large simple chunks, and add detail later.

Heres a tip : The hair should NOT be drawn directly onto the cranium! Hair has volume and doesnt lay flat against the head unless its wet or very oily.

How To Draw Anime Eyelashes Step By Step

This tutorial shows how to draw different types of anime and manga eyelashes from the very simple to the semi-realistic styles.

Eyes are probably the most defining part of the anime style and eyelashes are a very important part of them. This tutorial shows several examples of anime eyelashes and gives some quick tips on drawing them.

    Shaded Side View Drawing

For the side view of the shaded nose you can actually draw it without any shading . As the shadow is used to help define the nose there is no need for it in a view where the silhouette of the nose is already well defined.

In general the shaded style of anime/manga noses may be more appropriate if you want to create somewhat serious looking artwork but still retain the anime or manga look. Its also sometimes used when showing closeups of characters faces.

Focus Detail Mainly Around The Hairlines/part

You usually dont want detail to be absolutely everywhere when drawing hair. This can make it feel very busy. Instead, focus most of the detail around where the hair is growing from, and feel free to leave the larger areas without any drawn strands.

Heres a tip: When working digitally, you can check if something you draw is skewed by flipping the canvas horizontally! With traditional work, you can hold your page up to a mirror to get the same effect!

Why Art Teachers Dislike Anime Art:

Anime/Manga-style art is usually not very realistic. It stretches limbs, enlarges eyes, diminishes noses and mouths, tweaks human proportions, and does a lot of things for comedic or dramatic effect that arent very realistic. Art class is about learning to draw based on sight.
