How To Draw Sharp Masculine Anime Eyes

[TUTORIAL] How To Color Anime Eyes!

Step 1:

Create the shape of the eye. Create a sharp point for the outer eye and keep the lines streamlined. Taper the lines as it nears the inner eye.

Step 2:

Create the iris by drawing a half circle just below the eyelash line. Add a U shape in the middle of the circle to serve as the eyes pupil.

Step 3:

Step 4:

Add short lines around the U shape. Vary the length of the lines as you go along. This is an optional choice you can leave this part out if youd like.

Step 5:

Fill in half of the iris as well and the U shape. While doing so avoid the highlight parts.

Step 6:

Drag the color down and feather out the fill you just did to create a smooth transition.

Step 7:

The final step is to add a curved line just above the eyelash line for the eyelids.

Starting To Create And Color The Eye

Anime eyes are generally very simple, just a mere reflection of the realistic ones we have on our faces but this DOESN’T make them any less deep or important. You can simply cut down complicated shapes into more soft and simple ones for example, most anime eyes are totally lacking the Tear Duct, or the lower eyelio.

Start by adding the base color of your liking, and then in a multiply layer start adding shadows with a gentle brush create gentle strokes starting from the top corner of the iris.

With the same method, create more and more depth to the top corner of the iris, by adding darker and darker shadows I left a palette of the colors I used in the top left corner of the piece, if you want to use them. After that, procede to create the central pupil, in which I created a gentle and soft shadow all around it. After this, “embrace” it with two , soft lines .

You might not notice the difference from the two pieces but I’m using this picture to make you understand and learn an IMPORTANT thing: don’t always stay on the same color spectrum: I used a dark purple to add a more interesting look to the eye. If you use only blue is gonna end up being boring and less deep.

Whats The Difference Between Anime And Manga

The difference between manga and anime is that manga is seen in comics and graphic novels. And anime is seen on movies and shows. The characteristics of the two are basically the same. How they are presented is the only real difference.

The two are used interchangeably by the general public. Referring to these types of drawings as anime seems to be the most popular though.

Here you can see the results from using different colors and blending modes. I used the Overlay mode for purple, Vivid Light for yellow, and Pin Light for the blue tones and the pink details. They blend great with the grey layer.

The key is to know where you want to place the grey gradients, the darker areas, and the highlights. Please go back to chapter 4. Styles and greyscale when in doubt.

Try different colors and see which ones are best for the effect youre trying to achieve. In this illustration, I chose two complimentary colors: purple and yellow with pink and blue tints.

Grayscale coloring steps:

In 1, I simply started with the previously created grayscale drawing.

In steps 2 and 3, choose any color you fancy purple, with some blue in my case and try a blending mode that blends well with the greyscale.

In steps 4 and 5, I add some yellow using the Vivid light blending mode.

In step 6, I usually soften the dots a bit, by using the eraser or decreasing the layer opacity.

Finally, in step 7, I just add the finishing touches to emphasize volumes and textures.

Drawing Different Anime Eye Expressions

The factors that determine the expression of the eyes are:

  • The position and shape of the eyebrows
  • The position of the pupils
  • The position of the eyelids

One major difference between drawing realistic eye expressions is that in anime and manga the size of the pupil can be changed to create a more dramatic expression .

Below is a breakdown of each expression.

Need To Download Painter

Something very and manga eyes are the small circles added to represent light reflection and glare. These are typically drawn covering a portion of the pupil and iris, and are left uncolored.

Now you should be left with something that looks like an eye. Finish up by adding appropriate shading, and then add whatever color youd like to the iris.

But wait, theres something missing here. Eyebrows!

Since this is a female character, eyebrows are typically done by drawing a thicker arched line above the eye, contouring to the overall shape of the top lid. Again, here is where you as an artist get to be creative with the type of emotion you want to display. Depending on angle and thickness, you can portray various emotions. Play around with some positioning to see what works best for you.

Placing Anime Male Eyes On The Head

Anime Eye Tutorial! | How to Shade Anime Eyes | IbisPaint x

For placing anime eyes on the head draw a horizontal line through the middle of the head and draw the eyes below that line. Real eyes would be drawn directly on that line or even above it but anime eyes tend to be drawn lower down.

If you are drawing squinted eyes you may want to draw them a little further down from the halfway line as the top of the eyes will be covered by the eyelids.

These placement guidelines can also change based on style. If you are going for a very realistic look you may want to place the eyes further up as you would with real eyes.

Female Anime Eye Specifics

Anime eyes are almost always drawn bigger and wider than real eyes. This is especially so for female characters who often have larger and wider eyes than their male counterparts.

One thing that really sets female anime eyes apart from male are more prominent eyelashes . This is not always the case but it does tend to be so.

Learn How To Draw Anime Eyes In 9 Simple Steps

In this tutorial, Ill show you how to draw anime eyes to help you build a solid foundation in manga art style. Drawing expressive and believable eyes for your anime or manga characters is essential in creating an authentic and appealing look.

Gather your tools whether its paper, pencils, and erasers, or digital tools like Procreate and an iPad Pro and lets get drawing!

Before we start drawing anime eyes, we need to have a plan of action. This involves two stages of drawing: a rough stage and a clean-up stage. In the rough stage, we draw loose, messy, and free, building strong foundations on our paper.

  • All Levels

In the clean-up stage, we focus on making the foundations look clean and professional. If youre working on paper, draw your rough stage as lightly as you can. If youre working digitally, use two layers within your art software, one for rough and one for clean-up. You can always lighten the rough layer using the opacity slider later.

Here we can see an elementary diagram showing the 3D form differences between a real eye based on a sphere and an anime eye which is essentially like a flat sticker.

Keep this flat structure in mind when drawing anime eyes from the side view of the character, where the shape effectively compresses.

Draw Your Own Anime Eyes Step

Lets now implement the common visual elements of drawing anime eyes by actually drawing one. Step by step.

No, you dont have to draw a hundred of them like I did, just draw one, get a feel for it, then decide what you want to draw next!

To me thats the great part of drawing, once a fresh canvas is in front of you, you get to decide what to do next! You feel like a ruler of your own domain or at least you should feel that way, or rather, you will feel that way once your skill level is where you are happy with it.

Okay, without further ado, lets draw anime eyes. So far we have learned eight basic parts of the eye as discussed in detail above, these are:

Look & Learn How To Draw Anime Eyes

Ever since discovering anime, I have been fascinated by this Japanese art genre. Their characters are adorable no matter if theyre good guys or not. One of the main characteristics is the unusually large eyes they have. I spent a while perfecting my technique for drawing them and Id like to share it here. With just a few simple steps, you can capture the charm of the anime eyes and start creating your own unique characters.

For this mini-tutorial, Ive used Arteza colored pencils and a white gel pen. Colored pencils offer handling and vibrancy to cause your eyes to really stand out. The white gel pen is the ideal tool for adding bright highlights that bring the eyes to life!

Drawing Standard Anime Eyelashes

These are the more common eyelashes with some variation of them seen in most anime and manga where just a few of the individual lashes are shown.

Same as the previous example start by drawing the outline shape of the eyelashes without any of the individual lashes.

Again fill the outline of the eyelashes with black.

Eyelashes generally fan out around the eye so keep this in mind when drawing. Even though you dont need to show the full transition you should still keep the few eyelashes that are shown pointing in generally the right direction for that part of the eye.

As the eyelashes are so small and simple you can shade and draw them at the same time. Add larger eyelashes to the outer top corners of the eyes and smaller ones to the inner corners and bottom eyelids.

Again you can see what the eyes can look like with these types of eyelashes once fully drawn.

How To Make Eyes Look Unique

So here is a problem a lot of artists run in to after some time. I struggled with this as well, when I was starting out to draw. How can I make my characters all look unique? Or better yet, how can I make their eyes all look unique?

Well, the answer is probably way easier than you may think. Just change little but defining thinks of how you draw their eyes. For example, slightly tilt the eyes in a direction to make them look a little dimwitted or to make them look sharper. Make the eyes extremely round or insanely slim. Give them no reflections in their eyes to make them almost appear dead or evil. Or give them a lot of reflections to make them look innocent or happy.

Just play around with these little defining changes and you will be surprised how many different eyes you will be able to draw! Just take a look at these Sketches I did.

Layer : Add In Shadows

Next, duplicate the blending for the newly created layer. With a light purple color, paint in shadows below the eyelids and the pupils. For the interior of the eyes, if you add in shadows with the same color as the eyes painted in layer 1, the shadows will clearly stand out.

Use the eraser to erase a circular portion in the center of the pupils, and blend it with the blurring brush.

Bottom Lit Anime Face Shading

When the light is coming from the bottom pretty much the entire face will be lit up with the shadows being cast as follows:

  • Chin a small shaded area at the top of the chin as the chin usually tends to stick out a bit and that bump will cast a tiny shadow
  • Upper Lip the upper lip will cast a very small shadow as it sticks out just a little bit blocking some of the light
  • Nose upper area as the nose will block some of the light going upwards casting a shadow
  • Cheeks as the cheekbones also tend to stick out a little they will create some shadows
  • Forehead will pretty much be entirely dark as it curves away from the bottom light source

Expressions For Anime Eyes

In real life and in the manga/anime world, eyes are one of the most important features to express emotion. Remember that a series of facial muscles tighten or relax, depending on the expression you want to achieve.Lets take a look at the eyelids, the inner eye, and the eyebrows.

The emotions intended in these examples are easy to understand.

In example 1, the eyebrow is a bit tense, but the eye is relaxed and shining. This conveys a worried state or maybe missing someone or something.

In example 2, the eyebrow is arched vertically, and the eye is closed, so we can deduce that the character is happy.

In the next example , there is no shine to the eye, the iris is completely white, and the pupil is reduced significantly. This shows that the character is aggressive. Note that the eyebrow is arched in the opposite direction of the happy one in example 2, which also signifies anger.

Let us check all these expressions to deduce their meaning: 4 is suspicion, 5 is worry, 6 is neutral or observing, 7 is shock, 8 is sadness, and 9 is shock or madness, depending on the situation.
