Is Mo Dao Zu Shi on Netflix?
Unfortunately, Mo Dao Zu Shi is not available on Netflix at the time of writing but this doesn’t mean that the popular streaming platform will leave fans of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji hanging. The live-action series, known as The Untamed, is available to stream on Netflix with English subtitles. And, without meaning to sound biased, it’s excellent.

But now, Chinese animation is gaining popularity with many of its donghua series. While Donghua is a term used to define all kinds of animation, not just particularly Chinese, but it is generally used to refer to Chinese animation series.
And one such donghua series called Mo Dao Zu Shi has rapidly risen in popularity among the masses and rightfully so! It is packed with action and beautiful animation combining supernatural and fantastic elements together!

The Plot Of Mo Dao Zu Shi
The story revolves around Wei Wuxian, who is most known for his fearsome take on cultivation. Cultivation is a Chinese form for achieving a form of godhood or higher essence, although it doesn’t quite go as normal with Wei. Years before, he was summoned into the body of the destitute and abandoned Mo Xuanyu, who allows Wei to use his body as a form of vengeance against his tormentors.
Together, they embark on a journey to unlock the mystery behind a severed arm found at Wo’s house, which in turn connects to the initial death of Wei himself. Thus, they become known for their taking of the Wo Path — a “demonic” form of cultivation that deviates from the norm. Like many feudal Chinese fantasy stories that have recently become popular in foreign countries, the series also counts as a boys love or yaoi equivalent title, although the live-action adaptation downplays this aspect significantly.

Where To Watch The Mo Dao Zu Shi Anime/donghua
Easily the most popular version of Mo Dao Zu Shiis the animated series, or donghua. Unfortunately, at this time, none of the major streaming platforms in the West host the series. However, this is likely to change in the future, especially given the success of somewhat similar donghua such as Heaven Official’s Blessing being on Netflix.
Another way to enjoy the story is the live-action adaptation called The Untamed. This 50-episode drama ran throughout 2019 and was quite popular, although as mentioned, many of the book’s homoerotic themes are excised. Thankfully, it’s much easier to watch, as it’s available to stream through Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and the Rakuten streaming service Viki. Chinese media is becoming a much bigger force internationally, so it won’t stay the only such show on this service. Had it not been for the marvellous animation, the phenomenal storytelling and amazing characters, the music and sound design would probably be the best thing about the donghua. Whether it be Wei Wuxians haunting flute, Lang Wangjis Zither or the general background music, the show does not miss a beat in adding to the depth and intricacy of the MDZS world. Even general sound effects played at various times and moods of the show add greatly to the atmospheric nature of the show and elevate it to something beyond just being a good animated show.
What Is Mo Dao Zu Shi About
In a fictional Xianxia world, humans strive to achieve the state of immortality known as Xian. It requires discipline and dedication beyond the scope of ordinary people, and the cultivators show remarkable resistance to temptations in order to achieve it. However, Xian is not the only way to gain powers, but there is also one forbidden demonic path that can grant dark energy. So, when Wei Wuxian ventures beyond traditional cultivation and creates Mo Dao, his ascension into the world comes with chaos and destruction.
However, his reign of terror does not last long, and he is eventually killed by one of his allies. Several years following that day, he is again reincarnated and meets his former classmate Lan Wangji. The duo sets out on a journey to unravel the mysteries and the puzzling conundrums of the world, unbeknownst to the fact that the path they have chosen will lead them to Wei Wuxians murder thirteen years ago.

In China, Mo Dao Zu Shi is available for streaming on Tencents official website, on which it has already garnered billions of viewers since its release. The action-adventure donghua is accessible for international viewers on Tencents overseas streaming platform WeTV, where the third and final season of the show is available under the title of The Founder of Diabolism. You can also head to Tencents official YouTube channel to watch several episodes of the show.

The original novel is definitely the most sexually explicit. MXTX does not shy away from giving the lovebirds what they deserve. The main storyline reaches its finale in chapter 113, and another 13 extra chapters are added, which might satisfy your yaoi hunger.
The next most faithful adaptation is the audio drama which follows the novel to a T. So, of course, it also includes all the explicit content.
Although the manhua has shown some light affectionate scenes, I am not sure how far it will be able to portray the depth of it. It is currently ongoing, so that adds another layer of difficulty.
Both the donghua and live-action adaptations are heavily censored. Still, you should watch them for Wei Wuxians brighter than the sun smile and Lan Wangjis quiet yearning.

Hulu has a wide catalog of animated series but it does not have this one yet either.

Crunchyroll is like a heaven for the weebs but this platform does not have this series available yet either.
In China, this series is available on Tencents official website. So it is available for the audience abroad on their streaming channel WeTV. Their official YouTube channel also has several episodes of this action series.

The source material for it all is the original Mo Dao Zu Shi novel, which was written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. Published online from 2015 until the following year, the series was eventually released in print format. Thankfully for those interested in the series and Chinese cultivation fantasy in general, it has in fact been localized by Seven Seas Entertainment.
It’s fairly easy to come by as well, with online retailers like Right Stuf Anime carrying the three volumes. It can also be purchased in physical stores like Books-a-Million, Walmart, Target and Barnes & Noble, although they’re just now releasing recently. In the case of the latter retailer, readers can also enjoy the book digitally via Nook.
