Draw The Center Guide Line & The Top Of The Head

Star by drawing a vertical line through the middle of your drawing area. In this case it will be tall enough to accommodate the height of the head, neck, and the top part of the shoulders.

The purpose of this line is to act as a guide that helps make sure that both halves of the head/neck/shoulders are of relatively even width. Later it can also help with spacing and positioning the facial features.

At the top of this line draw a circle that will represent the top of the head.

Drawing Anime Girl Hair Step

Although I do not clearly draw the line of the head like in this example every time, I do identify it in my mind when I draw. So here, in these examples, I identified the line in purple for you.

In this front view, the eye line will always be around the center of the vertical line between the chin and the to top the head. So if you measure, the space between the chin and the eyes, is roughly the same as between the eyes and the top of the head.

Here is the under-drawing sketch for this example. I used procreate and an iPad pro to draw the face on a separate layer. The face is used in all examples here since hair is the focus. For the hair, you can see that I am more focused on the overall shape of the hair and less worried about what the lines look like at this stage.

These lines are just a guide for the final line art in the next step.

In this step I drew over the underdrawing with more precision. It could use more refinement and some shading still but much of the indecisiveness of the sketchy lines of the underdrawing is now left in the past.

Draw The Back/top Of The Hair

Draw the back/top section also split down the middle. The hair should first stick slightly farther up from the head towards its very top, then get a little closer towards it near the upper end of the sides of the head. Finally it should again curve away from the head towards the middle/bottom of the head.

After you finish drawing the hair you can erase the parts of the head/and ears that are covered by it.

In case you are wondering why you needed to fully draw out the head and ears and not just start with the hair there are several reasons for this. One is that seeing the exact size of the head makes it easier to place the facial features . Another is that drawing in such a way helps to avoid many potential mistakes.

Tip : Focus On Your Line Of Action

Your line of action is also known as gesture. While both of these poses are of the figure just standing there, the one on the right has far more visual interest because their line of action is more curved and fluid. The figure on the left has an almost mirrored pose, while the figure on the right has far more movement throughout their body. Keep this in mind while illustrating your poses!

Draw The Sides Of The Hair

After placing all of the facial features you can move on to drawing the hair.

To emphasize that the character is beautiful we will give her a fairly neat hair style.

When drawing the hair you can think of it as being split into the sides, front and back/top sections. For a more detailed explanation of this as well as examples of other hair styles see:

Begin by drawing the sides part of the hair. In this case these will be two fairly long clumps that begin from around the top of the head and end with a pair of splits slightly below the shoulders.

Make these slightly curved as though they are hugging the head/face and also make them slightly wider towards the bottom.

Add Long Pants Or Jeans

Long pants or jeans are the simplest addition to your character when it comes to anime clothes drawing. Along the lines you already have for the legs, draw some slightly curved lines on the outside edge to give a baggy appearance .

From here, draw curved lines around the ankles for a pooling effect and a couple of light lines around the knees for the natural crease of the pants.

Draw around the outside of the leg lines before erasing these to create a baggy pants look on your character.

How To Draw Anime Face Step By Step Tutorial

These step-by-step tutorials focus on the face, which, as it turns out, is pretty easy to do:

Draw a circle and add a cross in the middle this will keep the face symmetrical.

Start by shaping the face you can choose the shape you want.

Then draw the eyes, while using the cross as a balancing point.

We are also going to use tubes when drawing the legs. Extend them from the bottom of the hourglass shape. The knees are tricky because you have to place them one and a half heads below the torso. Use small circles to indicate the knees.

Finish drawing the lower part of the leg by extending the tubes until theyre of the same length as the top half. Add small circles for the ankle joints and attach trapezoid shapes for the feet.

Remove all the guidelines carefully. Try not to erase the basic shape of your characters body.

Add facial features, hair, clothes, and shoes, to complete the sketch.

Sketching The Female Body

1Draw a head at the top of your paper. Place a circle near the top center of the page so theres enough room to add hair later on. Put the point of the chin slightly outside the bottom edge of the circle since the jaw will come lower down. Sketch in curved jaw lines from either side of the circle toward the mark you just made to make a pointed chin for your anime girl.XResearch source

Work lightly in pencil so you can erase and make changes if you need to.

If you have trouble drawing a circle, use a compass to help you draw one.

Dont add any facial features yet since you may need to make adjustments to the size of the head later on.

Warning: Be careful not to draw the head too large or else you wont be able to fit the rest of the body on the sheet of paper.

2Make a vertical line thats 6 ½ times taller than the head down the middle of the paper. Measure the height of the head from the top of the circle to the point of the chin. Start your line at the top of your characters head and draw it straight down so its 6 ½ taller than the head. Space horizontal marks down the vertical line so theyre the same distance apart as the head height to use as guides.XResearch source

Measure your proportions each time or else your anime character wont look natural.

The guide line will also help keep your drawing symmetrical.

When youre finished, the head and torso together will be about 3 heads tall.

Your anime girls shoulders should be about 1 ½ times wider than the head.

Common Mistakes Young Anime Artists Make

When you start out drawing manga there are a few pitfalls and lazy tricks that almost everyone is guilty of doing.

If youre starting out then learn what they are and how to avoid them. These mistakes are so common then nearly every great anime artist was guilty of doing at least one of them when they were learning!

Remember: Youre still gaining knowledge and growing. Its not about the end product you create, but rather what you learned in the process.

Draw The Overall Shape Of The Female Body

One of the most important thing to keep in mind when drawing the full figure is the proportions or the relation of one body part to another. Everything has to be the right size or your character will look odd.

Certain styles may deliberately exaggerate certain proportions there are still rules to follow when drawing.

For the front view of the girl you should start by drawing a vertical line. This will help you make both sides of the figure more even. If you are drawing two views at once you can add the horizontal lines to make sure that the different body parts match up in both views.

Drawing both views at once is a good exercise. If you are good at drawing one particular body part in one view but not so much in another this can help you.

Sketching An Anime Body

1Draw a stick-figure outline of your characters body. Use straight lines for the arms, torso, and legs. Make the arms and torso similar in length, and make the legs about 1/3 longer. Then, draw triangles or ovals for the hands and feet. Make the hands about 1/5 the length of the arm, and make the feet about 1/6 the length of the legs.XResearch source

To get the proportions right, make your stick-figure outline about 7 times as tall as your characters head.

Have the arm lines start about 1/5 of the way down the line you draw for the torso.

Have the stick-figure outline of your character capture whatever pose you want them to be in. For example, if you want your character to be sitting, draw their legs so they’re bent. Or, if you want your character to be waving, draw one of their arms so it’s bent.

2Outline the general shapes of your characters body. Drawing over the stick-figure outline you made, sketch a rough outline of your characters torso, arms, hips, and legs. Dont worry about making the outline precise yet. At this point, you just want to represent the different parts of the body with basic shapes.

Draw ovals for the upper and lower arms and legs, and then draw a circle at each joint for the knees and elbows. Proportionally, make your characters upper and lower arms the same length and size. Make their upper legs thicker than their lower legs.

To outline the hips, draw an oval over the point where the torso and upper legs meet.

Add The Facial Features

Draw two circles on the center guideline but leave a small opening at the bottom of each; these will be your eyes. When youre drawing anime, the eyes are one of the most important features and are usually much bigger than the other facial features. Sketch in an arch over the top of each circle and a curved line around the far side of each to frame the eyes.;

From here you can also add in a small V shape on the center guideline for the nose, a slightly curved line for a smiling mouth, and a couple of short and light pencil strokes underneath the eyes for a blushing effect.

Adding the facial features starts to bring your character to life.
