Drawing Anime Mouths With The Entire Face

You can see the overall placement of the facial features for the head used for this tutorial in the example above.

When drawing the entire face there is no need to divine the head into eight portions. You can instead start by placing the eyes below the vertical halfway point of the face, position the nose halfway between the top of the eyes and the bottom of the face and position the bottom lip halfway between the nose and again the bottom of the face.

This method works for all of the head views shown in this tutorial. It or similar methods are also used for most of the face drawing tutorials here on AnimeOutline.

Drawing The Basic Head Shape

  • 1Draw a circle on your paper with a vertical line running through the middle. Use a pencil so youre able to erase your lines if you make a mistake. Lightly draw the circle in the center of a piece of paper so you have room to add features to it. Find the middle of your circle and lightly sketch a straight line that extends from the top of the circle down your sheet of paper so you know where the middle of the face is.XResearch source
  • Start by drawing your circle large so you have room to draw the features. Otherwise, your lines may get messy and it could be hard to draw correctly.
  • Tip: If you have trouble drawing a circle without help, either use a compass or trace something circular.

  • 2Make a guide line for the eyes a third of the way up from the bottom of the circle. Measure about a third of the way up from the bottom of your circle and use your pencil to make a mark. Use a straightedge to draw a horizontal line that extends past the edges of the circle to use as a guide for the characters eyes. Dont apply too much pressure when you draw the line since it will be hard to erase otherwise.XResearch source
  • Your measurements do not need to be precise. If you dont have a ruler, estimate the distance with the end of your pencil instead.
  • If youre drawing a female character, place the mark at a distance equal to of the circles diameter since female anime and manga characters tend to have rounder faces.

    How To Draw Anime Socks

Generally you can show socks on the legs with pretty much just a pair of curves a bit below the knees. You can also add a second curve below that one to show the cuffs.

The reason you want the curves is obviously due to the curve of the legs. However, what may not be so obvious is that these curves are actually determined by the eye level of the viewer.

For example if you had someone in front of you wearing socks and you were to place your eyes directly at the level the cuffs these curves would appear pretty much flat . If your eyes would be below the socks then the curves would go in the opposite direction .

Generally though you tend you tend to be looking down at peoples feet you will usually see the curves of the socks around the leg as shown in the prior examples.

In this case the sock are drawn with a minimal amount of detail but in some scenes more detailed drawings may be shown. Usually though you will tend to see something similar to the example.

Also in this drawing the socks are just plain white but you can of course make them a different color if you prefer.

Add The Eyes Nose And Mouth

Draw two half ovals on either side of the face with small, curved lines inside for the ears. Moving inside the face circle, in line with the ears, youll start working on the biggest featurethe eyes! Anime eyes drawing can seem complicated but remember to break it down into shapes to make it easier.

Start with two curved lines on each side with the gap between them being the width youd like the eyes to be. From here, draw in the curved lines of the eyeballs and a lighter curved line over the top for the eyebrows.

Add the eyes first, as these are the most important facial feature on anime characters.

Shade in a small circle at the top of the eyeballs to create the pupils, adding in a few short lines on the curved lines underneath for eyelashes.

Along the center guideline, add a small V shape or two short lines for the nose. Most anime mouth drawing is a simple line in the bottom third of the face, so add this in to complete the features.

As you make progress on your drawing, dont forget to keep using your guidelines to help you.

Brainstorm Your Character And Build A Concept For Their Pose

How To Draw Boy Anime Heads Step By Step For Beginners ...

You character brainstorming can take many forms, including finding references, inspiration, and getting to know about your character. The more you know the character the better you will be able to represent them visually. This is one reason that it can be much easier to get started with drawing fan art than drawing original characters. Those that you represent in fan art already have a story, posture, and style that you can draw from. If you intend to make an original character, you’ll have to make choices about all these character traits.

    • What’s your character’s posture like? Fitness level, and overall style?
    • Do they perfectly fix their hair in the morning or is it slightly messy?
    • What kind of clothes do they wear?
    • What are they normally doing? It’s a good idea to portray the character in the act of doing something that most defines them.

Drawing Anime & Manga Faces Viewed From Below Hard Angles

This tutorial is a bit advanced, but if you are ready for it, go for it. This tutorial explains how to draw faces from angles that you dont typically see in manga and anime.

One of those is the one where the viewpoint is below the chin, making the chin look big and other features like eyes, small.

The reason why you dont see these too much in the manga is that in manga art, the chin is usually very pointy, aesthetic, or downright beautiful and when you view that from below, you will have to draw the chin based on realism.

Its pretty hard to draw a chin that is pointy when viewed below. It just doesnt work, so in these instances, you cant draw so much in manga and anime style but have to incorporate realism to it.

Which also means that you have to get into the mature style of manga and anime heads.

Define Your Light Source And Add Shadows

How to Draw Anime Face PROFILE SIDE VIEW | Manga Drawing Tutorial

When creating a base for my shadows I start by adding basic and delicate shading to my character, without defining any light source. This stage adds depth to flat colours and creates a strong base for the actual shadow.

To paint flat shadows I imagine my light source, then add a layer set to Multiply above the Color layers. Next, I paint a shadow with just one colour on this new layer. It’s usually greyish purple, but depending on what effect you want to achieve, you can use any colour.

I make my shadows glow by adding another layer above my earlier Multiply one and set it to Color Dodge. Now with a soft brush I paint the areas that I want to glow, using a colour that’s low on value and high on saturation.

    Drawing Anime Body & Pose

Poses, figures, bodies in anime and manga has always been and will still defy laws of proportions and rules of the human figure.

If you think anime movies like Afro Samurai and feel the shapes of the characters body movements, the flow of hands and legs, you quickly see that they genuinely defy natural proportions of the human figure.

However, that being said, the characters still feel and look like real humans, and that is because they always follow rules of muscles and proportions. Even though anime characters usually somewhat distorts the human figure, they still have the correct dimensions if you exclude the head .

    Common Features In Manga Drawing

    • Manga drawing techniques adopt their own visual shortcuts, including:
    • A giant bead of sweat on a characters head theyre exasperated or frustrated.
    • A snot bubble coming out of someones nose theyre asleep.
    • Motion lines behind a character this can mean theyre moving, indicate a character is making a dramatic statement or show a character is determined, maybe to a ridiculous extent.
    • The character dies, temporarily, and turn into a ghost a characters embarrassed.

Many of these symbols began as literal representations before moving into abstraction. The anger symbol began as a representation of a bulging vein, says Crilley. Its turned into an icon of three or four curved lines. To the uninitiated, it might look like some kind of sparkle or star shape.

    5. Study popular manga.

This visual language also includes playing with different visual styles in the same comic. An aggressive character might be drawn in a more realistic or detailed style to stress that anger, whereas a character whos the butt of a joke could look more cartoony. To become more familiar with these visual shortcuts, study a few broadly popular manga comics, such as Naruto, Case Closed, or Oh My Goddess! Or peruse the anthology magazine Shonen Jump to see varying art styles approaches to these shortcuts in each volume.

    6. Cultivate your own manga style.
