What Is Anime Fan Service

What Do Americans Think Of Fan Service

What is Fan Service?

Lets be honest. Sex sells where ever you go. Want to sell cigarettes? Make an add of a sexy woman smoking cigarettes and you will get more eye balls. Thats just how it works.

Fan service has been keeping anime from going bankrupt. Big boobs and sexy girls can help you sell almost everything but it does not keep fan around for very long. That is the problem.

American anime fans do like the fan service but because American was built on Christian values there is still a stigma around using nudity too much. That is why when anime comes to America, it is highly censored.

Its funny because America is the country that innovated porn.yes, you read that correctly. Innovated porn. Despite of that fact, people in America like to act as if they are pure and very moral however, they can be very degenerate in the dark.

The guitarist from the Queen movie said it best.

Americans are purist in public but perverts in private.

Americans like fan service but it just cant be in the anime too much because it tends to ruin the story and just makes the characters and the story uninteresting. When most people sit down to watch an anime or any movie, they want to be taken away by a good story.

What do you think about fan service? Comment below.

High School Of The Dead

The thing about fan service anime is that its not necessary for them to have complicated plots. In their purest form, theyre just thatfan service! And High School of the Dead is a great example!

High School of the Dead is a really straightforward and simple anime. Heres a zombie apocalypse set-up, a gang of school survivors, some weapons, and a lot of over-sized melons! Its best not to think about it too much. Just barge right in with very little expectation and youre all set!

If youre still not convinced about trying High School of the Dead, I guarantee that it is remarkably appealing in all its visual sense, if you know what I mean. This show has unparalleled self-indulgent action and jiggle physics! You should try if you know whats good for you.

Shinmai Maou no Testament

Free Literally Requires Its Characters To Be Topless Sometimes

This series revolves around the Iwatobi Swim Club, a quartet of high-school boys who practice swimming and even enter regional or national tournaments on occasion. Taking a dip in the pool isn’t recommended without a proper swimsuit, especially in competitive swimming where speed in the water is crucial to coming out on top.

However, Kyoto Animation uses Free!‘s plot and setting to dish out a good amount of fanservice, frequently with the character Gou Matsuoka reacting just like how the audience would. This series is aware of what it’s doing with its fanservice, making it less irritating to deal with.

Thats The Difference Between Good And Bad Fanservice

One is all about exploitation. Male or female. And is a distraction and feels unnecessary.

The other is when its used within context, makes sense, and even better: it enhances the anime .

But the thing is: the context is blurry sometimes. Its hard to draw the line or even know where the LINE is.

Wisdom changes that.

is known for going to the extremes. But unlike Highschool Of The Dead, Kill La Kill parodies typical tropes and fan service cliches, makes fun of it, and turns it into an ART FORM.

It makes you giggle more than it makes you cringe. Because of how well-done and daft it is.

So when it comes down to it:

  • Appropriate fan service FEELS a certain way.
  • Exploitative fan service is blatant, tacky and obvious.

And thats how you can usually notice it.

Kakegurui Is Deliberate In Its Portrayal Of Fanservice

Best Fan Service Anime

Much like the point of fanservice in Food Wars!, Kakegurui reserves its portrayals of provocative scenes for very specific moments. Kakegurui is about gambling and its main character, Yumeko Jabami, receives an unusual amount of pleasure from taking unbelievable risks. But shes not the only one, as there are several more students at Hyakkaou Academy who derive just as much titillation from risky gambles as Yumeko does.

As a result, Kakegurui is as guilty of overabundant fanservice as Food Wars! is. But since fanservice is dedicated to heightening the tension during gambles, Kakegurui gets a pass for its egregiously seductive scenes.

Im Just Not A Fan Of Fan Service

Fan service, in small doses, is somewhat acceptablehowever, that kind of anime is hard to find. Every anime I click on has some character with outrageous proportions, making it a real cringe-worthy watch.

Unfortunately, it seems fan service will remain one of animes most popular tropes for a long time.

Where Did The Term Fan Service Came From

I always hear fan service in manga reviews. I understand the term’s meaning based on inference -to mean some sort of ecchi. But does anybody know where the term started?

  • 1i think it’s more adhering to fan requests than just adding ecchi, after the credits of the Rebuild of Evangellion Misato says the next moviue will have added fan service and the innuendo is really just the same in the next movie, then again i’m not sure, i tend not to notice any sort of fan service or even read reviews

Fan service , fanservice, or service cut , is a term originating from anime and manga fandom for material in a series which is intentionally added to please the audience. It is about “servicing” the fan – giving the fans “exactly what they want”. Fan service usually refers to “gratuitous titillation”, but can also refer to intertextual references to other series – Wikipedia

That just about describes fan service… and to answer your question

Here Are Some Examples Of Fan Service In Anime:

Gintoki pretends to be Goku

In Gintama – episode 115, Gintoki gives Dragon Ball Z fans some fan service while playing in the woods. He cups his hands together, squats, and shouts Ka-me-ha-me-ha! Watch the entire episode and youll find even more fan service.

Sora brings Skyrim to No Game No Life

No Game No Life is an anime about gamers. In episode 6 post credits Sora says, I used to be a gamer like you. Then I took an arrow in the knee This is a reference to every NPC solider in the video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The snapshot above is fan service, but not because of the nude, angelic woman .

Lize thinking about eating rations.

In Is The Order A Rabbit? – episode 3 , when Lize imagines eating food rations, a user interface appears around her imitating a menu from the video game series Metal Gear. Fans of the game will make the connection as soon as she opens the menu and begins cycling through her inventory.

Kill La Kill & Nudity

The Meaning of Fanservice – Anime Discussion

Studio Triggers Kill la Kill gets pretty gratuitous with its fanservice. The outfits that the characters door, perhaps more appropriately, do notwear are often outrageously hypersexualized, even for anime. In fact, these outfits are so outrageous that they draw attention towards some of the shows central themes.

Kill la Kill wants to explore ideas of social norms and expectations, one of the foremost of which is dress, modesty, and whether or not theres value in those concepts. The self-inflicted exposure of characters in this show is often presented as an empowering experience by casting off garments and overcoming the social stigma associated with such a practice, the characters who do so quite literally gain the power necessary to defeat their adversariesor maybe the artists just wanted to draw hypersexualized outfits, who knows.

Good Examples Of Controversial Fanservice

Ecchi series can be very controversial. Here are some examples of anime series where it is hard to tell whether or not the fanservice is meaningful, and adds to the experience of the show, or if it just overwhelms and ruins the it.

Highschool of the Dead

This show is actually very well done, but the grotesque, outrageous, physics-defying fanservice it contains make it infamous.

The show is a perfect example of a series with fanservice that is distracting, and just flat out ridiculous. Some scenes were just so forced, and unnecessary it was almost impossible to immerse yourself, and fully enjoy the show.

But at the same time, you could tell that the show wasnt taking itself seriously, and all it was trying to be was a fun action series, featuring hot women fighting zombies. So the fanservice could be forgiven at times.

Why Does Anime Have So Much Fan Service

The answer is very simple. To get attention. Especially if its for a male audience. Anime and manga such as Naruto, Bleach, My Hero Academia and such, will have girls with big boobs or in bikini every few episodes to keep the boys interest in watching the anime or reading the manga.

Fan service is used to get people reading the first few chapters of a manga or the first few episodes of an anime. Once the reader or viewer is hooked, then the next season or episodes will have less fan service and will be more story focused. This is what happened in the first season of Naruto when the blonde ninja was using the sexy Jutsu. During the arc with Haku and Zabuza there was no sexy Jutsu. The same could be said about the arc of the Chunin exam as well as the hunt for Sasuke and Orochimaru. The Naruto series matured and yes, there was some fan service thrown here and there but for the most part, the series was pretty serious.

The Qwaser Of Stigmata

Episodes 36 + OVA | Aired Winter 2010 | Produced by Hoods Entertainment

Only in Japan, was my first thought when I first saw The Qwaser of Stigmata. It has a unique concept, I love that someone was brave enough to come out with something like this.

Summary

The St. Mikhailov Academy student Oribe Mafuyu comes across a mysterious silver haired boy named Sasha. He is a Qwaser, a being that draws power from Soma and is able to manipulate a specific element. And now, in the 21st century, the mystery revolving around an Icon turns the academy into the battlegrounds for the fight between the Qwaser!

Even though it can be a bit offensive. I strangely enjoyed this series a lot! It has a bit for everyone. With an original story, action, ecchi, shounen, super power, supernatural, a bit of comedy and actually made me want to brush up on my chemistry lessons.

Do You Love Your Mom And Her Two

Anime With Best Fan Service #1

Never admit to anyone that you watch this show, trust me.

Its an isekai centered around a son-mother duo where the mom is very, um free with her clothing choices, and her words.

Theres a reason why some people coined the phrase milfsekai just to describe this show.

Id say this is a guilty pleasure anime where even by ecchi standards, nothing makes sense. But you just have to forget about that and look at a hot mom owning some noobs.

Prison School is in a genre all of its own honestly.

It centers around an all-girl school that suddenly gets five male students.

Surprise surprise, the men are pervy, and the females dont quite appreciate that.

So theyre now in prison, I guess. And then everything just hits the fan.

The word pervy does not do these lads enough justice, and the vice president is into some serious kink stuff with knockers that could probably crush an average coffee table.

Camera angles can come from any direction, and every fetish has a chance to randomly pop up. It truly is a fan service masterpiece.

Katanagataris Fanservice Builds Its Main Characters

Shichika Yasuri spent the entirety of his life on an isolated island with only his sister and father for company. Suffice to say that he’s not socially adept, even at 24-years-old, which is why the fanservice moments in this anime are so brilliant.

Rather than the typical perverted high schooler who can’t stop a nosebleed once he gets a panty shot, Shichika is blissfully unaware that he should feel any kind of pleasure from seeing Togame nude, or even from being in close quarters with her. In fact, Katanagatari uses fanservice moments to underline how naïve Shichika is and it effectively enhances both his and Togame’s personalities.

    Fujiko Mine & Sex Positivity

Fanservice in anime can feel exploitive at its worst. Oftentimes, the female characters who are the subject of said fanservice have little agency over their own sexuality they’re often exposed by accident for comedic purposes or for the titillation of the viewer. In these instances, the subtext seems to suggest that female sexuality is a hidden thing that’s exposed by happenstance or by the actions of a male character.

Director Sayo Yamamoto upends this arrangement in Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. This is an unabashedly sexy show with enough nudity to make a Highschool DxD fan blush, but the critical difference here is that the show’s protagonist, Fujiko Mine, always retains primary agency over her sexuality, sometimes using it as a tool to her advantage as a thief.

Anime Has Too Much Fan Service

I’ve watched a ton of Anime, to the point my social life is questionable and my sanity is thin. It’s great, don’t get me wrong. The Japanese know their shit when it comes to entertainment, but there’s nothing more disappointing than the feeling of awkward discomfort when sudden fan service springs up in the middle of a show you’ve been enjoying, it just seems so unnecessary and forced sometimes. If it is relevant to the plot, I don’t see why not, but it makes no sense to just have random instances of blush and cover moments, or boob/side-boob shots.

Take SaO for example, it’s relatively clean in those terms, and I enjoyed it immensely, but then they had to add a tentacle monster to invade the lower section of a certain character, followed by an unnecessary rape scene.

Just wondering how much the world can endure of this. What do you think?- Idek, my fingers hurt and I want to sleep off the depression of Attack on titan. Feh… _ .

    Other Issues With Fan

Fan-service distracts from the story. It brakes the story at awkward times, and often appears at inappropriate times in the plot, such as high action or dramatic scenes. Fan-service also targets strong female characters it seeks to make these characters more palatable by still subjecting them to the male-dominate gaze. She may be making a crucial point for the story when a wind comes in and kicks up her skirt. Some of the timing comes from the embarrassment factor of fan-service. It happens when least expected because the characters embarrassment makes the situation funny, but for those of us in the West, the timing disrupts the story. We also dont have the same type of embarrassment-humor.

Not All Fan Service Is Bad Fan Service

Not all fan service is bad. In fact, fan service itself isnt inherently bad. Its just treated that way.

Sometimes by people who are prudish or act like sex or showing skin is taboo, illegal or dangerous. Despite they themselves getting down and dirty like everyone else.

That said, there is a way to spot good fan service that goes unnoticed. And isnt highlighted enough.

    Heres some examples.
