A Brides Story Volume 10 Review

While its been a while since the last volume of A Brides Story, its been even longer since the manga has checked in on the original couple: the young Karluk and his much older bride Amir.

A Brides Story volume 10 is divided into two distinct parts. The first section is more like A Hunters Story than A Brides Story. The book opens with a textless two pages about a goat.

Yes, a goat.

Karluk is learning about hunting and falconry with Amirs family, and Kaoru Mori as she does time and again showcases this beautifully. Mori isnt afraid to show some of the slaughtering by both man and beast as well how the hunters snatch baby falcons in order to train them. And let me tell you, every scene with the falcons is visually amazing. These are photographs in manga form.

With the temperatures dropping, hunting becomes even more important, and Karluk has to work extra hard to keep up with the more experienced men of Amirs family. While the age gap has always been a factor in Amir and Kaluks marriage, Kaluk believes this will make him more a mature, manly husband. With the two of them living separately, he has time to think about his relationship with her. Even comments about female falcons being better hunters than males hits a little too close to home.

Again, though, its the art that makes this manga the wonder it is, and while this volume isnt the best of the series, its still a beautiful, high-quality work that should be added to your collection.

If you are not already aware, the series is set in 19th century Central Asia. The culture is without a doubt Turkic.

The main setting of the story is explicitly mentioned to be a rural village near the Caspian Sea.

It’s important to note that the land and territory borders in the 19th century were vastly different from what is is today.

This bit, done by the author for the 2014 Taisho Award, sheds some light on the regions each of the characters are from.

Karluk’s town is located in modern Uzbekistan, and are of Uyghur ethnicity.

The city where Mr. Smith meets Talas, Karaza is likely in Karakalpakstan, part of Uzbekistan.

The town where Mr. Smith and his guide meets the twins is Muynak/Moynaq, a city in northern Karakalpakstan.

Joe Simon And Jack Kirby’s Young Romance

Aside from the one-time publication of comic-strip reprints, romance as a comic-book genre was the brainchild of and , two comics artists known for their superheroes, such as , and their kid gangs, such as the . Simon was serving in the when he got the idea for romance comics: “I noticed there were so many adults, the officers and men, the people in the town, reading kid comic books. I felt sure there should be an adult comic book.” Simon developed the idea with sample covers and title pages and called his production Young Romance, the “Adult Comic Book”. Simon later noted he chose the love genre because “it was about the only thing that hadn’t been done.”

After the service, Simon teamed-up with former partner Kirby, and the two developed a first-issue mock-up of Young Romance. and other artists participated, with Simon and Kirby producing the scripts because they “couldn’t afford writers.” Rather than the dramatic comic strips, Simon took his inspiration from the darker-toned confession magazines such as True Story from .

The finished book was delivered to ‘ general manager Maurice Rosenfeld. Crestwood owners Mike Bleir and Teddy Epstein were enthusiastic and worked out a 50% arrangement with the creators. Profit sharing was unusual at the time, and Kirby later noted he and his partner were, in fact, the first to receive percentages.

    The Little Red Reviewer

My husband reads a lot of manga, and lately hes really been talking up A Brides Story by Kaoru Mori. I kept bugging him to write me a guest post about it, but he wasnt sure what to say or how to say it. To help him out, I gave him some guided questions to get the conversation and the review going.

Andrea: What is the plot of A Brides Story?

Michael: A Brides Story is a manga about the lives and marriages of several women along the Silk Road in the late 19th century. Amir Halgal is the first bride and is interesting as she comes from a semi-nomadic clan but marries into a settled clan living in a relatively modern town.

Andrea: How did A Brides Story come to your attention? What made you interested in reading this?

Michael: A Brides Story was recommended by a reviewer I follow. I am a historian so anything about a past time and in an unusual place will catch my attention. I had heard of Kaoru Moris earlier manga Emma so I new the author was interested in detailed, accurate historical fiction.

Andrea: Why was it enjoyable to read? What were you surprised by?

Michael: I loved the attention to detail, the look at the day-to-day life of the main characters, and the exploration of a different culture and time period. I guess I was surprised by the authors attention to detail about small things such as wood carving and weaving. All of the brides are distinct personalities so some stories have more humour some more jeopardy.

Yume No Shizuku Kin No Torikago

    • Volumes: 10

Chie Shinohara is another veteran shoujo mangaka who has also set several of her stories in Eastern countries. So far, her most famous work has been Red River, although most of her stories have not been made into anime. In Yume no Shizuku Kin no Torikago, she retells the story of Alexandra, a peasant girl from the Ukraine who is abducted and taken to Istanbul, Turkey. She is raised and educated to become Sultan Suleimans concubine, but as much as she wishes to become Empress to be free, Suleiman already has a wife and a son. Therefore, the manga chronicles Alexandras rise from slave to empress.

Otoyomegatari and Yume no Shizuku Kin no Torikago tell us the stories of women in Eastern countries. Such women mostly are seen accompanied by other women and their guardians or family circles. Through both manga, we can learn a lot about costumes and the history of places that have changed a lot if we compare them to how they are nowadays. The protagonists also both tore feelings when loyalty for their original families/country and the current ones is tested. The main difference is that Empress Roxelana existed in real life and she was one of the most powerful figures of state that has ever existed. If you like historical drama and would like to read something based on a real historical figure, this manga might be the right option for you.

    Japanese Animation And Manga

Slice of life anime and manga are narratives “without fantastical aspects, which place in a recognisable, everyday setting, such as a suburban high school, and which on human relationships that are often romantic in nature.” The genre favors “the creation of emotional ties with the characters.” The popularity of slice of life anime started to increase in the mid-1980s. Masayuki Nishida writes that slice of life anime and manga can still involve elements of fantasy or a fantastical world: “Fantasy is sometimes used as a means to express the reality of human beings under certain possible conditions.”

Robin E. Brenner’s 2007 book Understanding Manga and Anime holds that in and , “slice of life” is a genre that is more akin to than , bordering on absurd due to the large numbers of dramatic and comedic events in very short spans. The author compares it to teen dramas such as or . This genre claims a large section of the Japanese manga market and usually focuses on school and . An unusual slice-of-life narrative is characteristic of “” light novel series, where a realistic human reaction to supernatural circumstances is depicted by the author.

Stevie Suan writes that slice of life anime such as often involve exaggerated versions of the “conventionalized expressions” of the medium, such as “white circles for eyes in times of trouble, shining, vibrant big eyes to depict overflowing emotion, sweat drops, animal teeth, and simplistic human rendering.”
