Mobile Suit Gundam: Where To Start And What’s Worth Watching
fan to get the most out of the latest Gundam, is entirely standalone, taking place in its own setting apart from the larger Gundam
If Iron Blooded Orphans gets you on a Gundam kick, however, that’s when things begin to get tricky. In 36 years, the Gundamfranchise has had plenty of time to craft a tangled timeline of history and mythos. Delve into the wrong show, and you might miss half the context.
You may have seen my article recently on building your first Gunpla, or maybe you’ve read my reviews of Iron-Blooded Orphans here on the site. I’ve been a huge Gundam. This guide is composed of my personal recommendations for fans who want to see what all the Gundam fuss is about, but aren’t sure where to start. I’ll cover the many Gundam universes, the shows that take place in them, and whether they’re worth your time.
Netflix Is Getting Classic Gundam Anime Movies And Were So Amped
Excitingly, the original Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy and the Gundam: Char’s Counterattack movie are arriving on Netflix in two weeks time, so save the date, call in sick and order a mountain of takeaway to mark the occasion.
Sometimes, when you sit down to watch something on the streaming service, the selection is nearly overwhelming. Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling through what seems like thousands of shows and movies. This year alone, I’ve watched Community, Derry Girls, Narcos, Blown Away, Bridgerton, the Pitch Perfect series and all of the Shrek movies. Really something for everyone there in that list. Still, there’s a clear absence of anime from the ’80s and ’90s. If you like your Studio Ghibli movies, then you’re golden, but a lot of the most iconic shows in that genre are to be found on other streaming services such as Crunchyroll and Funimation. Totting up the various expenses from other things like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, , Disney Plus, it can cost an arm and a leg quite quickly.
Complain as I might, Netflix’s range is really expansive. Like, did you know there’s going to be an animated spinoff show about League of Legends? Check out the trailer here.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Era: Future CenturyLength: 49 Eps.
Gundam rose to popularity by setting itself apart with a grounded plot and a realistic look at giant robots as weapons of war.
But not every entry in the series is quite as square-cut.
In Mobile Fighter G Gundams future, the nations of the universe have agreed to lay down their weapons and settle their differences with a Gundam tournament.
This focus on one-on-one battles makes it really easy to get into with no previous Gundam knowledge.
G Gundam is a must-watch if youre in it for the bad-ass characters and brutal mobile suit battles.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Stardust Memory
Era: Universal Century Length: 13 Eps.
This OVA series serves as a prequel to the fantastic Zeta Gundam. Its value lies in making the latter even better by adding context, and further exploring how evil and corrupt the Earth Federation can be.
Its one of the most visually impressive Gundam shows from before the turn of the century.
Unfortunately, the same cant be said about the plot.
What could have been a fantastic story of Zeon remnants fighting to keep the flame of their nation burning, is lost due to a gravely generic protagonist, bland secondary cast, and unlikeable antagonists.
All that said, this anime is fantastic if you edit everything out but the battle scenes.

Now on Netflix, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway is the first of three planned anime films adapting Yoshiyuki Tominos manga series from 1989-90. Its also a piece of the endless Gundam franchise sprawl, which spans dozens of TV series, films and comics dating back to the late 1970s, and tells stories of giant human-controlled military robots battling against the backdrop of a future in which humans have begun migrating off Earth before they render it uninhabitable. The title worth mentioning here is 1988s Mobile Suit Gundam: Chars Counterattack, as its events are frequently referenced. If any of this makes sense to you, then youve probably already made plans to watch Hathaway. If it sounds like so much gobbledygook, you may want to start elsewhere in the Gundam tangle or just shrug and fire up Too Hot to Handle or the Liam Neeson movie where he drives the semi-truck over a frozen Arctic lake.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway
At the time of writing, Hathaway isn’t out just yet, but there’s still a lot of reasons to be excited, based on what we know about the movie from promotional materials and trailers, as well as reviews from those lucky enough to have gotten an early showing. The movie is an adaptation of a novel by franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, which has drummed up a substantial amount of hype among fans eager to see another of his works come to the Universal Century.
Based on the source material and early reviews, it’s clear that Hathaway plays out like an intense political thriller, following the son of one of the Earth Federation’s heroes as he leads a brutal insurgency against the very government that his father sought to protect.

Victory Gundam Uc 0153
Happening in the distant future from the other events in this universe, Victory Gundam has a pretty clichéd plot about a young boy piloting a mecha in order to face off against the Zanscare Empire. The issue is that it doesnt really tie into other events in this universe, and it doesnt tell a particularly fleshed out story either.
Future Century G Gundam
Instead of devolving into the war, the space colonies decide that it will instead pick a leader by holding a Gundam fighting tournament between their chosen pilots on Earth. G Gundam has its moments, but it is basically your standard fighting anime and lacks the intelligent, complex, and even compelling plot and characters that made the Universal Century great.

Regild Century Reconguista In G
After adapting an anti-technology religion, humanity has entered a time of universal peace. However, one boy wants to ruin it all by piloting a mobile suit he found. Not unlike its name, this Gundam series is confusing. It is like someone took normally complex Gundam politics and turned the dial up to 12. In fact, you wont fully understand everything until near the end, if ever. However, while complex is fine, the fact that the characters take action with no particular reason behind it is not.

How To Watch Gundam In Order
If you choose the path of not just picking the series that sounds the most intriguing and watching it, watching Gundam in order is less about lining all the series up, but rather lining the series up in the correct universes in the Gundam Multiverse.
There are currently three main universes in the Gundam Multiverse as well as a large handful of universes that only feature one series. The key to watching Gundam in chronological order is to pick a universe, then watch the shows within the universe. This can be the trouble of just picking series at random and watching them, if you cross universes, it could potentially be confusing if you think about it too hard since Gundam Wing doesnt have the same history as Gundam Zeta, for example.
So, what are your Gundam Multiverse watching options?

Gundam SEED rose to popularity by emulating what made Gundam Wing so successful:
An enticing cast and engaging storytelling.

Since it takes place in a completely different, isolated continuity, Gundam SEED could be a great entry point to the franchise.
You Need To Watch The Most Fearless Sci
This Japanese classic is overstuffed with gunfights, explosions, and fierce anti-war commentary.
Anti-war messages abound in popular entertainment.
But often, these stories fall into a predictable pitfall by focusing too much on delivering excitement and entertainment, accidentally glorifying the very violence they set out to criticize.
However, one classic of Japanese popular culture â often referred to as the countryâs answer to Star Wars â rises above the rest to deliver a universe thatâs both expansive and complex while retaining its poignant, hard-bitten commentary on the terrible tolls of warfare.
The Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy is streaming on Netflix. Hereâs why itâs worth checking out, and what you need to know before you watch.
Even after 40 years, Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Mobile Suit Gundam remains an exhilarating piece of popular entertainment. Broadly, it focuses on teenage boys who pilot giant mecha that wage war using equally giant lightsabers. But this franchise also marks one of the more elaborate anti-war statements ever delivered in mainstream animation. Comprised of dozens of anime series, films, and video games, Mobile Suit Gundam is now streaming in condensed form, via a compilation film that knits together footage from the original 1979 anime of the same name.
