English Light Novel Release Order / Kizumonogatari First Order

How to Watch The Monogatari Series

This is less of an order and more of a minor adjustment to the former. Though he said it during a much simpler time, author Nisio Isin claims in the author’s note of the novel that he thinks Kizumonogatari can come before Bakemonogatari. If you’d like to experience it first and then proceed with one of the previously mentioned orders, it is another viable option. The official English release of the novels released this way and has generally followed novel release order for the proceeding parts, the only difference being that Bake and Kizu are swapped at the start. This could also be considered the “Vertical” release order, as it is the publishing company behind the English release, though they have since rebranded as Kodansha USA.

As the origin story, Kizumonogatari is arguably one of the most accessible stories in the series, having the most action and a fairly straightforward plot. This is compared to the traditional first entry, Bakemonogatari, which purposefully starts the story in the middle of the timeline to create more mystery and intrigue about its characters.

If the rest of the series seems too intimidating or unappealing for whatever reason, Kizumongatari is a decent starting point for those looking to find a different hook to get them into the series. Just note that other installments are comparatively less accessible and that watching this first will also remove the mystery element mentioned in Anime Release Order.

Tv Anime Story Arc Overview

There are three overall seasons of the Monogatari series that you can start watching. The titles are split into parts that always end in monogatari at the end and usually feature one to three overall story arcs. For ease of reading, Ill be breaking them down in accordance to the broadcasting order, but will leave a chronological timeline at the end if you want a more linear narrative.;

Anime Series Like How A Realist Hero Rebuilt The Kingdom

Based off of a series of light novels by Nisio Isin, the series collectively known as Monogatari has risen to stunning popularity among the anime community. The fanbase, particularly in the West, grew into a much more fervent army when SHAFT received the rights to adapt the light novels into anime series. However, like so many other series that bear similarities in name and run on a vast, or at least complex, timeline, it can be difficult for new fans to get into. So if you are looking to start into the Monogatari series, but want to know how to watch it, look no further.

In the Monogatari light novels and anime, the story is made up of either one central story or a number of short stories about different characters in the same universe. This can make watching in chronological order particularly difficult, but while you totally can watch in chronological order, it is actually not the recommended way to watch the series for the first time. Typically chronological is better for a rewatch of the series or after you read the light novels. The good news is that the recommended watch order is actually the release order, but that has gotten more complicated with the release of the second season of Owarimonogatari since new fans may see a second season and watch it outside of release order accidentally.

Monogatari: Why You Should Watch The Supernatural Series

The Monogatari series is one of the most unique anime out there, but also one of the most confusing to figure out. Here is what you need to know.

Monogatari is certainly one of the weirdest and most beloved anime series out there. Produced by Shaft, the studio also behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the anime is based on a series of light novels by Nisio Isin that follow a former vampire and the many mythical entities he encounters. The story gradually expands, and more characters, myths, and dangers are introduced, the show becomes an intense mix of supernatural mystery, drama and romance.

What makes Monogatari stand out is that the anime flows more like a novel than a typical anime. The anime is heavily driven by dialogue, and the weight of the narrative is placed on the lives of its cast. Each arc focuses on the personal story of one character, as seen through the eyes of the protagonist and narrator, Koyomi Araragi.

Monogatari is willing to go into darker subjects as often as it is willing to show Koyomi, a third-year high school student, attempt to wrestle and suplex a girl in elementary school, and its tone certainly reflects that. Koyomi often serves as the comic relief for the more intense situations that surround the other main characters. Sometimes a scene becomes so insane that you wonder if Koyomi is making it up, but the mere fact that you arent sure keeps you on your toes.

Light Novel Release / Nisio Isin Order

This is the completely original order in which stories were released by author Nisio Isin as novels. Unlike anime release order, all shuffles in chronological placement are fully intentional for the narrative. This makes certain plot points related to Kizumonogatari less confusing, but some argue that the anime placement for Hanamonogatari and Koyomimonogatari actually work better, though these changes are relatively minor in comparison. Instead of recommending the original release, some may recommend a Hybrid Order because of this reason.

Go this route if you want to experience the story as it was originally intended, at the cost of missing the mystery and anticipation element of Kizumonogatari, among these other minor differences in the meta-narrative.

Note that if you watch in this order, you will need to watch Hanamonogatari in between Second Season after the 10th Episode.

How To watch Monogatari series:Monogatari fanbase in the west has grown so much in the last few years. But the main problem for the newcomers to get into this anime is its timeline and watch order.

For newcomers, Monogatari can be an overwhelming arrangement to get into. Trust me, its justified, despite all the trouble. The anime isnt for everybody, except there is nothing else like it. In the light novel or anime,, the story focuses on mainly one character, or it consists of short stories about different characters of the same universe, and this makes the anime challenging to watch in chronological order.

If you are watching the anime for the first time, it is recommended to watch the anime in releasing order rather than the chronological order which is usually suggested at the time of rewatching of anime. But after the release of third season and rumors of fourth season being on its way the chronological order has become really messed up and difficult to watch.

Some people can find the order really confusing and overwhelming, however,; it was really simpler to get into, in view of how its part into every one of those short arcs compared with shows that have like 200+ scenes and feel like youll never put them on your Finished list.

Monogatari Series Watch Order: Chronologically With Episode Count

Monogatari series is one of the most epic and legendary anime out there, which glorifies the true essence of Japanese folk-lores in the most modern way possible. The ample comedy, fan-service, and action made the series very famous for its unique animation style by Shaft Studios. Written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Vofan, the novel series is still ongoing with content enough for another season.

The anime series is written by Akiyuki Shinbo for all the season and movies. The plot follows ;Koyomi Araragi, a third-year high school student who has almost restored his humanity after briefly becoming a vampire during spring break. One day, Hitagi Senjogahara falls down a flight of stairs at school into Koyomis arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs almost nothing, in defiance of physics.

As the series progresses, Koyomi finds himself involved with other girls afflicted by oddities: the ghost of a child named Mayoi Hachikuji; his underclassman Suruga Kanbaru; Nadeko Sengoku, a friend of his sisters; his classmate Tsubasa Hanekawa; and his own younger sisters Karen and Tsukihi.

To deal with the apparitions, which feed on human emotions and often take forms symbolically represented by animals, Koyomi relies on supernatural guidance from Oshino and, later, from Shinobu, the once-powerful blonde vampire who attacked him and later assumed the appearance of an eight-year-old girl. How To Watch The Monogatari Series In Order

    Monogatari Watch Order

Have you always wanted to watch Monogatari but you don’t know how to start? If you’re a big anime fan, then you know that the Monogatari series is immensely popular. It’s based on the Japanese light novels by Nisio Isin, one of the best writers in my opinion. With a total of 24 novels, many fans might not want to invest a lot of their time to finish all of them. That shouldn’t be a problem because the anime adaptations are excellent, as long as you know the correct Monogatari watch order.

Since SHAFT adapted the light novels into anime, Monogatari had become even more popular. In many ways, it’s a unique anime show because of the sheer number of characters you must keep track of, each of whom has a special story to tell. Despite having a common theme, it’s fun and exciting to each character’s story unfold within the same universe and find the link between all of them.

If you’ve followed the anime adaptations since day one, then you probably enjoyed it without any problems. SHAFT released each series in the intended order. That means anybody who’s looking to get into Monogatari can do the same. Still, it’s worth noting that you can follow this series in multiple ways. This guide is meant to help you find the best Monogatari series watch order depending on how far into the story you are right now.

    Unofficial Orders / Placements

There are some fan-made orders that make slight adjustments to where parts like Kizumonogatari, Hanamonogatari, and or Koyomimonogatari should be placed. These aren’t official, but are subjective orders that are more like fusions of anime and novel release order that make slight adjustments. These are viable, but aren’t based on official releases, so they weren’t necessarily intended to be seen this way by neither Nisio Isin nor Shaft.

    Anime Release / Shaft Order

For a long time, this was the rule of thumb order for anime only watchers as it was mostly the only plausible order for each respective group. With studio Shaft temporarily skipping Kizumonogatari and no official English translations for the series arriving until 2015, this is generally how most longtime English speaking and or anime-only fans originally experienced the series.

While there are a few other reshuffles in the meta narrative, the biggest difference with this order is that it presents Kizumonogatari, theorigin story, as a mysterious missing part of the story to be anticipated later in the series just before the finale of the main story. While many don’t have a problem with this and enjoy the added mystery element, some argue that it leaves too many unanswered questions that are answered too late in the series and is now made obsolete. From a narrative perspective, it works more as a happy accident than an intentional narrative, so certain plot points around the origin story don’t flow as comfortably.

Some people still like the reshuffles Anime Release Order introduces outside of Kizumonogatari, therefore recommending an unofficial Hybrid Order instead of the originally intended order from the author.

Monogatari Series Simple Watch Order Guide 2019 Update

For newcomers, Monogatari can be a daunting series to get into. Trust me, its worth it. Admittedly, the anime is not for everyone, but there is really nothing else like it.

The novels are well written on a different level too

Some people find the watch order overwhelming, but for me it was actually easier to get into, because of how it’s split into all those short arcs/seasons compared to shows that have like 200+ episodes and feel like you’ll never put them on your “Completed” list.

At the very least the first season is worth it on its own. I couldn’t really continue after but I still think the first season is great.

With this list and all the good feeback, I guess it’s time! Cheers 🙂

Its so gorgeous but its crazy busy too – in a good way!

Have to agree. I hated Bakemonogatari, but after Nise I started to like it … And since 2nd season it’s one of my favorite.

I watched the 3 kizumonogatari movies first

One day I will complete Bakemonogatari, one day.

Legit question as I’ve tried to watch this a few times. Do you need to read all the text on the screen that appears at times? That has been one thing that made me stop when it took me over an hour to watch one episode.

No you do not. The flashes of text are just excerpts from the book and are not plot-important. Fun to read upon a rewatch, but unnecessary for the first time.
