Why Is Animation So Expensive To Make
Creating animations is expensive because there is a lot of work going into creating it. Even if it is a very Simple Animation it still needs a lot of work.
Anime already is one of the more cheaper variations of Animation, because it is comparably simple in style. Anime was invented because of the high Animation costs and was specially developed to cost less. If you are worried about anime needing to be from japan then don´t be, there are actually non-japanese animes out there. So Animes can be made in American for example.
But let´s take a very rough and simplified look at how Animators work and how long it takes to only create 60 seconds of Animation.
Animes Slave Labor Problem
Anime is almost entirely drawn by hand. It takes skill to create hand-drawn animation and experience to do it quickly.
Shingo Adachi, an animator and character designer for Sword Art Online, a popular anime TV series, said the talent shortage is a serious ongoing problem with nearly 200 animated TV series alone made in Japan each year, there arent enough skilled animators to go around. Instead, studios rely on a large pool of essentially unpaid freelancers who are passionate about anime.
At the entry level are in-between animators, who are usually freelancers. Theyre the ones who make all the individual drawings after the top-level directors come up with the storyboards and the middle-tier key animators draw the important frames in each scene.
In-between animators earn around 200 yen per drawing less than $2. That wouldnt be so bad if each artist could crank out 200 drawings a day, but a single drawing can take more than an hour. Thats not to mention animes meticulous attention to details that are by and large ignored by animation in the West, like food, architecture, and landscape, which can take four or five times longer than average to draw.
Even if you move up the ladder and become a key-frame animator, you wont earn much, Adachi said. And even if your title is a huge hit, like Attack on Titan, you wont make any of it. Its a structural problem in the anime industry. Theres no dream .

Watching anime doesnt make you a weeb. In some circles, this would be a given. And yet Ive often had to defend myself against such an insult. I have been watching anime and reading manga since before I was in elementary school. However, I would consider myself a former weeb, one whos seen the light and made a switch.
But before I dive into that revelation, what is a weeb? Weeb is short for weeaboo, an often derogatory term used for people who are obsessed with Japan and supposedly Japanese culture. The term first sprang into existence from a comic strip in which it was used as a nonsense gag that meant nothing. So, how did a word that meant nothing turn into an insult?
This is where the internet comes in. In the early 2000s, users on the online imageboard forum 4chan started picking on a subset of Japanophiles by calling them wapanese a portmanteau of wannabe and Japanese. It was an insult specifically targeting white people who were obsessed with Japanese culture to the point of abandoning their own such as those who would wear costumes of anime characters to a formal event or who would embed Japanese phrases into everyday English speech.
So many arguments were started around the word that 4chan moderators decided to intervene by replacing all instances of wapanese with the aforementioned nonsense word weeaboo.

So these are the two most expensive Animes I could personally find. But as you can see, the prices for creating high-quality Animations are very high!

The Importance Of Discs
Home video is still vital for animation studios. Production committees and studios will rarely if ever comment on revenue splits, but its been implied that home video is extremely important for an anime studios bottom line.
Discs sales have also been falling in Japan every year since 2005, meaning that this revenue stream is drying up. This is one of the reasons anime is so expensive to buy in Japan. The studios are trying to make up for the lack of quantity sold at high prices.
Digital sales of anime series are also down, highlighting that fans dont feel a need to own their favorite anime. However, these sales are still relied upon by studios to help cover their costs, which has led to 25% of all studios reporting a net loss of profits.
Presenting And Approving The Idea
There are a total of 2 major source materials where anime is made from Manga/Light Novels and Original Anime Scripts. In order for pre-production to even begin, the publisher must present his/her source material to the production companies such as Aniplex and Viz Media who will pay for most of the expenses such as broadcasting, advertisements, and the production itself. Production companies will also handle finding sponsors. But if youre planning to make your Manga or Light Novel in the hopes of making it into an anime, hold your horses. First off, theres a lot of competition and second is that the publisher will also help with the costs, so dont think that youre not gonna spend a single penny.
Next is that the Animation studio will also take a look at your idea or source material and see if they want to take on the project. If its an anime original script then the studio might lend you a hand in terms of the expenses. But approval can take time and depend on how big the project is. Also, take note that anime original scripts take longer to approve than source materials such as Manga or Light Novels.
