Dont Make Muscles The Focus

[TUTORIAL] How to Draw a Head | Anatomy – Part 1

When artists first start paying closer attention to adding anatomy to their drawings they often have a tendency to overemphasize the anatomy. The figures often end up looking like they have no skin. The muscles are there to add more realism to the figure, but they shouldnt be the focal point of the drawing.

Start By Drawing The Basic Shapes

Drawing anime characters is fascinating and looks pretty hardbut, interestingly, all your favorite characters are born out of basic shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and so on.

Start by improving your basic drawing. Practice simple figures like straight lines, circles, rectangles, ovals, and other similar shapes. This sounds boring , but everyone who draws has started from this “baby” stage, so why should it be any different for you? To build complex structures, you need to first master simplicity. This will help you improve your drawing and your creative vision.

Try drawing these basic shapes for a few minutes daily. Then, draw anything that fits your imagination. You can try combining these basic shapes to make real-life figures for example, you can use squares or rectangles of different sizes to build basic human anatomy. One such example is given in step 3 below.

Draw With Reference Material

Getting everything right in the first few attempts is pretty rare. Its better to start with reference material. Sometimes what you think is best may not really work the same way in reality. If you are drawing a historical character, then start by researching other, similar characters. Study their personalities, statures, colors, and how their faces are drawn to show the types of characters they are.

You can also follow specific manga artists and should definitely check other peoples work, especially when you are a beginner. Most famous artists have distinguished approaches, You can also look at photographs or take inspiration from real-life objects, animals, and human beings. An example in the image above is Yuno from the anime Black Clover . Yuno is serious, handsome, and sophisticated. He also has the power of the wind. All these attributes are clearly identifiable in this drawing.

The Anatomy Of Anime Hands

Pin by Steven Jennings on Anatomy Reference

Anime hands, though so smooth and simple, share their basic structure with real hands. If you understand this structure properly, everything will be easier for you! Let’s start with the bones.

As you can see, the fingers are longer than they appear. They’re “buried” inside the palm, which makes this part less flexible. That’s why for practical reasons it’s better to see fingers as starting where the palm ends. The thumb is an exception hereit’s far away from the rest and can move on its own, not being limited by the palm.

Each finger has three joints. The sections between them get progressively shorter. The thumb again is an exceptionit only has two joints, and its bones are similar in length.

Of course, we don’t really need to know the boneswe need to know their function and how they affect the look of the hand. The simplified structure of the hand consists of:

  • the heads of the forearm bones
  • the wrist
  • the palm
  • the thumb base
  • four three-segmented fingers
  • one two-segmented thumb

It’s very important to memorize this fan-shape rhythm between the joints. It influences the look of the hand, regardless of the pose of each finger. It makes it easier to guess the position of each joint in relation to the others, even the thumb’s.

Do Use Muscles To Reinforce The Action

The focus of a drawing should convey an action, an emotion or the subjects personality. You dont want a viewer to stop and look at the parts of your drawing you want the viewer to see the whole figure and be interested in what that figure is doing and who he or she is.

In order to maintain focus on the action its always a great practice to start all your drawings with a gesture drawing. A gesture drawing serves as a blueprint for the action. Everything that comes after is to help clarify and enhance that action.

The muscles should be drawn to amplify the movement of the figure and shouldnt draw attention to themselves. A good example of this is comic book characters that have exaggerated anatomy to convey their strength.

A successful comic book page isnt about the characters muscles but about how that characters power is being expressed in the story. The volumes of the muscles are designed to lead the eye through the body toward a point of action. The reader isnt stopping to look at the characters well-developed musculature.

Notice how the muscles in the figure on the right reflect the gesture drawing on the left. The muscles are used to reinforce the figures action, they arent the focus of the drawing.

The Takeaway:

Anatomy is there to add realism but its less important then conveying the action and attitude of the whole figure.

Drawing Anime & Manga Faces Viewed From Below Hard Angles

How to draw Anime “Basic Anatomy’ (Anime Drawing Tutorial for Beginners)

This tutorial is a bit advanced, but if you are ready for it, go for it. This tutorial explains how to draw faces from angles that you dont typically see in manga and anime.

One of those is the one where the viewpoint is below the chin, making the chin look big and other features like eyes, small.

The reason why you dont see these too much in the manga is that in manga art, the chin is usually very pointy, aesthetic, or downright beautiful and when you view that from below, you will have to draw the chin based on realism.

Its pretty hard to draw a chin that is pointy when viewed below. It just doesnt work, so in these instances, you cant draw so much in manga and anime style but have to incorporate realism to it.

Which also means that you have to get into the mature style of manga and anime heads.

Dont Think Like An Anatomy Book

Drawing anatomy for beginners can feel overwhelming at first because there are so many muscles on the body. When youre looking at a model and you see a lot on bumps, you might be tempted to pull out an anatomy book to decipher whats going on under the skin.

An anatomy book is great at telling you what youre looking at but its not very helpful at telling you the three-dimensional shape of the muscles.
