HOW TO DRAW BLUSH! (TUTORIAL)

Your anime drawing is almost complete! Sketch two vertical lines directly under the face for the neck, making these as close together as youd like depending on how skinny or wide the neck should be.

Finish up the facial features before adding in the final touches.

Anime hair will be the biggest difference in your drawing, depending on if youre working on an anime girl drawing or an anime boy drawing.

For boy hair, draw a small dot about one inch from the top of the face circle. From here, youll draw curved lines down to create a floppy hairstyle thats common for male characters. Youll frame these out by looping the lines up on the other side of your first lines to create shapes that look like a palm tree.

Hair on anime characters is typically messy so dont worry about it looking perfect.

For girl characters, youll start with those same curved lines that you would on a boy character, but keep these to only one or two lines. Youll then draw bigger curved lines around the outside of the face to create longer hair. Shade the outer edges of the hair to make it stand out and add any additional lines youd like to give it some more shape.

Once your drawing is complete, erase the guidelines before coloring or going over in ink.

Once youve added in the hair, you can erase your original guidelines and your drawing is finished!

Drawing Anime Expressions: Disgust Being Appalled

Depicting very specific feelings in Anime drawing can get very complex. Often, we get context from the plot of the story itself, , we also get audio feedback accompanying the visual. Often, as I mentioned above, we also get to see the entire figure and the gesture of the hands support the expression of the face. Finally, we get to see the lighting and color choices of the artists who worked on the scene, these too are designed to help communicate the expression in question.

In the above example, you can notice the shoulders going up as the character communicates the feelings of being disgusted or appalled. The mouth is semi-open in dismay, eyebrows are sloping down but not nearly as much in drawings expressing anger, fury, or rage.

Start With A Simple Shirt

Anime clothes drawing will vary depending on how youd like your character to be dressed. For beginners, a simple shirt design is the easiest starting point.

Around the neck of your character, draw sloping lines downwards and around the neck, leaving a small gap in the middle, to create an open-collar shirt.

Start with the shirt collar before working on the sleeves or details.

Along the arms, add a light line in the middle where the elbow crease would be, with two slightly curved lines around the wrists for the ends of the sleeves. From here, you can draw a line straight down from the open collar to the waist, leaving an upside down V shape at the bottom. Draw two lines from either side of the hips in to meet the bottom of the V shape to form the ends of the shirt. A few dots up the centerline will give you the buttons.

Buttons and crease lines help to make your clothing appear more realistic.

Add Long Pants Or Jeans

Long pants or jeans are the simplest addition to your character when it comes to anime clothes drawing. Along the lines you already have for the legs, draw some slightly curved lines on the outside edge to give a baggy appearance .

From here, draw curved lines around the ankles for a pooling effect and a couple of light lines around the knees for the natural crease of the pants.

Draw around the outside of the leg lines before erasing these to create a baggy pants look on your character.

Drawing Anime Expressions: Being Hurt

How to Draw Anime & Manga Blush in Different Ways ...

In the above depiction of a character being hurt, we are looking at the face from above. It appears below our eye level and is foreshortened. Eyes are drawn closed and teeth are on display. When we are in pain, we tend to wince. A wince is an involuntary grimace or shrinking movement of the face out of pain or distress in Anime, the depiction of teeth grinding serves to communicate this expression. We see an extra line added as the skin folds around the top of the nose to further substantiate the expression.

Why Do Schools Hate Anime

Why Art Teachers Dislike Anime Art:

Anime/Manga-style art is usually not very realistic. It stretches limbs, enlarges eyes, diminishes noses and mouths, tweaks human proportions, and does a lot of things for comedic or dramatic effect that arent very realistic. Art class is about learning to draw based on sight.

Drawing A Combined Anime Blush

In some styles of anime and manga blush is shown with a combination of stripes and either a gradient or solid shape . To draw this type of blush first draw the gradient and then add the stripes over top .

Once again you can see how the blush will look like on a fully drawn out face in the example above.

For a larger version of the combined blush you can yet again simply draw it as one big blur going over the nose area and add a single set of lines over top.

In this final example you can again see what this blush can look like with the facial features.

How Do You Color Anime Eyes

Laying down base colors

Using fill tools, fill in the inside of the eye. As this is just the base, dont worry about shades. Focus on making sure that there are no gaps between the line art and the fill color. Use the eraser tool if the paint goes outside the line, and use the pen tool if there are small gaps.

Drawing The Male Figure

Drawing Anime Blushes
  • 1Make an oval with a pointed bottom near the top of your paper for the head. Place the oval in the top middle of your paper so you have enough room to add hair later on. Draw angled lines down from either side of the oval that extend down to form the jaw line. Sketch the jaw lines so they meet at a point below the oval to form the chin.XResearch source
  • Male anime characters usually have longer, narrower faces than females.
  • Dont draw your circle too large or else you wont be able to fit the rest of the body on the page.
  • 2Extend a vertical line thats 6 ½ times taller than the head down the page. Measure the height of your characters head from the top of the circle to the bottom of the chin. Multiply the measurement by 6 ½ to find out how tall your character should be so its proportional. Start the line in the top center of the head and extend it straight down to the length you found so you know how tall your character should be.XResearch source
  • You can also draw horizontal lines marking the head size along the vertical guide. That way you can visually see where the characters anatomy lines up.
  • 3Sketch in a rectangular shape for the torso. Draw a horizontal line below the chin on your characters head to mark the tops of their shoulders. Add lines down from the ends of the shoulder that angle slightly toward the center guide. Once the torso extends halfway down the vertical guide line, draw a horizontal line on the bottom for the hips.XResearch source

    Sketching The Female Body

  • 1Draw a head at the top of your paper. Place a circle near the top center of the page so theres enough room to add hair later on. Put the point of the chin slightly outside the bottom edge of the circle since the jaw will come lower down. Sketch in curved jaw lines from either side of the circle toward the mark you just made to make a pointed chin for your anime girl.XResearch source
  • Work lightly in pencil so you can erase and make changes if you need to.
  • If you have trouble drawing a circle, use a compass to help you draw one.
  • Dont add any facial features yet since you may need to make adjustments to the size of the head later on.
  • Warning: Be careful not to draw the head too large or else you wont be able to fit the rest of the body on the sheet of paper.

  • 2Make a vertical line thats 6 ½ times taller than the head down the middle of the paper. Measure the height of the head from the top of the circle to the point of the chin. Start your line at the top of your characters head and draw it straight down so its 6 ½ taller than the head. Space horizontal marks down the vertical line so theyre the same distance apart as the head height to use as guides.XResearch source
  • Measure your proportions each time or else your anime character wont look natural.
  • The guide line will also help keep your drawing symmetrical.
  • When youre finished, the head and torso together will be about 3 heads tall.
  • Your anime girls shoulders should be about 1 ½ times wider than the head.
  • Inconsistency Between Different Views

Misaligned or differently sized facial features between different views of the same character is a very common mistake made by beginners. In the example above the first side view of the face much narrower eye than the front view. Small mistakes like this may result in characters that dont look like themselves in different views.

When drawing the same character in different views check carefully to make sure that the different facial features keep the same size and alignment in relation to one another.

    Anime Expressions: Anger And Rage

Anger is perhaps the easiest to represent in Anime and Manga art. Features determining this emotion are easy to identify: the eyebrows are lowered and slanted to the center of the face. The mouth is open the character is often shouting in anger. The whites of the eyes are visible as the eyes are open wide.

Really intense and emotional spikes of anger are highlighted by a shouting mouth in Anime, perhaps just like in real life. In this expression, the jaw will move down substantially in real life, but no so much in Anime and Manga art. The silhouette of the head stays the same in most examples. However, a lot of the faces showing anger in Anime are drawn with the nose higher on the face, making space for the open-shouting mouth.

    Neon Genesis Evangelion

A drawing of a character shouting at another, or a character leaping into a fight with a battle cry is characterized by a forward-moving motion. Notice how in the image just above, the head is drawn to show forward movement. Inevitably, if this drawing showed up in Anime frames, we would see the character moving forward on the screen.

The jaw is dropped down at this angle . We are looking up from below at this character as indicated by us seeing the bottom of the nose, and the bottom of the chin, and not seeing the top of the hair/head.

In the example above, the eyebrows are tipped down to the center of the face, showing displeasure. The eyes are open wide, focused on the object of dissatisfaction .

    Drawing Anime Blush With Strokes

How to Draw Anime & Manga Blush in Different Ways ...

A striped anime blush is made with just a few line strokes and is fairly easy to draw. Simply make two sets of angled lines around the cheek areas. For a nicer looking blush make the outer stripes a bit shorter and the inner stripes a bit longer. Aim for a combined shape that can fit inside a stretched oval. Alternatively you can also make all of the stripes pretty much the same length.

Above you can see the example of the striped blush drawn with all of the facial features.

For a bigger striped blush you can draw it as one set of strokes going all the way across the nose area. You can again make the strokes longer in the middle and shorter at the outer edges.

As you can see above this type of blush may be more appropriate for a more emotional face.

    Drawing A Solid Anime Blush

The simplest blush to draw. You can indicate this blush with just a set of two ovals on the cheeks. You can also make these bean like shapes instead.

Generally this type of blush is used on more stylized or Chibi anime characters but more serious looking characters can have it as well.

For an example of drawing a chibi character you can check:

Above you can see how the solid blush will look on a more standard anime character.

You can also draw a larger version of the solid blush with just one shape going across the nose and onto the cheeks. It may be a good idea to slightly curve this shape so it does not go over the bottom of the nose area.

Again in the above example you can see how this type of blush will look with all of the facial features.

Elements Of Expression In Drawing An Anime Face

Before we get into specific expressions and how to draw them, it is important to discuss exactly what we will be working with. When developing a new expression for your Anime characters, realize that you are working with specific elements. Here they are:

    Neon Genesis Evangelion

This means as we evaluate expressions, pay attention to the eyes and the lips first. How were they drawn to express happiness, anger, sadness, excitement, surprise, and so on? Try identifying them separately. First, segment the features and look at them separately and also look at them in that order: eyes and lips, eyebrows, nose, then the silhouette of the face.

Further, when we set out to redraw some expressions, or design expressions of our own, try this approach of designing elements in a sequence:

    • first, have a plan for the expression you want to draw. The faces drawn with the least intent, end up with the most ambiguous results regarding expressions. Try writing down what expression you are drawing next to the drawing first.
    • Start with the design of the eyes and lips
    • Identify the design of the eyebrows that will best fit the eye design already in place
    • Check to see if nose and silhouette of the head will be impacted with the design you created, if so, draw it as such.
