How to Draw ANIME EYES: Female and Male in Pencil – Drawing Tutorial (step by step)

Start with freshly sharpened pencils. For fine detail you want to use H pencils. For texture and shading, use B pencils. The blacker and bolder the pencil, the softer the lead will be. Standard sketching pencils are HB or 2B.

Start with the simple round upper eyelid.

Begin to outline the lower eye.

The eye starts to take shape.

Connect the lower part of the eye ball.

Give the eyes a little life by adding some dimension. Reflection makes the eyes feel alive!

See how the eye is looking more and more alive!

Add an outline around the eye to add definition.

Fill in the pupil.

Shade around the white of the eye to add more detail. Add a couple eyelashes and youre done!

How To Draw Male Anime Eyes

The Eye we dre above looked more like a Female eye, but why? And how can you draw a Male Anime Eye?

What makes an eye look male? The answer is pretty easy. It is slimmer, more angular, doesn´t have big light reflections and the iris is smaller.

Here is the sketch of an Eye, I made, keeping the differences from above in mind.

Not let´s add some details but we are keeping the eyelashes to a minimum and the reflections are very small. The lines are also way more angular.

Only these very subtle differences made a huge difference. You can obviously push the differences more by making the eye even slimmer and the iris rounder and smaller. Or you could also make the eyebrow bushier.

Getting To Know Parts Of The Eye

Before we even start drawing, well need to learn and understand different parts of the eye and its structure. It is also good to have some knowledge of the eye structure of a realistic eye. Ive made a post with more details about it here.

Now, I will show you parts of a realistic eye. Later on, I will show you how anime eyes can be simplified.

Step 1:

Create the eyelash line by drawing a thick curve. Add a sharp point at the outer part of the eye and curve down to create the lower lash line.

Step 2:

Create a thin oval shape that would overlap the lash line you just drew. Add a U shape in the middle of the circle to serve as the eyes pupil.

Step 3:

Step 4:

Add short lines around the U shape. Vary the length of the lines as you go along. This is an optional choice you can leave this part out if youd like.

Step 5:

Fill in half of the iris as well and the U shape. While doing so avoid the highlight parts.

Step 6:

Drag the color down and feather out the fill you just did to create a smooth transition.

Step 7:

To create eyelashes, start by flicking lines around the eyelash line. The lines need to curve and taper to a point. Add a curved line to connect the end of each lash back to the eyelash line.

Step 8:

Finish the eyelashes by shading in the gaps.

Step 9:

The final step is to add a curved line just above the eyelash line for the eyelids. You can also add lower lashes by flicking short lines just below the lower lash line. Make sure that each lash tapers to a point.

Something very characteristic of anime and manga eyes are the small circles added to represent light reflection and glare. These are typically drawn covering a portion of the pupil and iris, and are left uncolored.

Now you should be left with something that looks like an eye. Finish up by adding appropriate shading, and then add whatever color youd like to the iris.

But wait, theres something missing here. Eyebrows!

Since this is a female character, eyebrows are typically done by drawing a thicker arched line above the eye, contouring to the overall shape of the top lid. Again, here is where you as an artist get to be creative with the type of emotion you want to display. Depending on angle and thickness, you can portray various emotions. Play around with some positioning to see what works best for you.

How To Draw And Color Anime Eyes Tutorial

I like this tutorial, even though it might look a bit messy as the camera is moving where the artist moves the pen. Which creates a bit of difficulty to follow along.

Sometimes the drawing is way too zoomed in, but then again, that is the way the artist prefers to draw, so we do have to appreciate and understand that.

Its also nice to see a tutorial from someone using the Procreate app. The thing that I like the most about this tutorial is the way the artist shows the different layer techniques for coloring and rendering the manga eye.

Real eyes are located in the middle of the head. Anime eyes are often draw much farther down the head.

A good guide for drawing anime eyes is to draw a horizontal line through the middle of the head as shown in the above example and to draw the eyes below that.

Its important to note that if the eyes are closed or squinted the top eyelashes will need to be drawn further down from the horizontal line in the example. If the eyes are wide open then the eyelashes will need to be drawn further up.

Beginners Mistake And How To Avoid Them

There are quite a few mistakes, that beginners make. Here are the Mistakes, that I see the most and my tips on how you can avoid these mistakes.

The eyes look deadWhen the eyes, you drew, are looking like they are dead, then you should add reflections in the eye. Reflections make an Eye look alive!

The eye looks flatIf your drawings look flat then you should check your shadows again. when you draw a shadow in the wrong place or when you draw your shadows too dark then the drawing will look flat. Also if you don´t draw the eyelids correctly then your eye may look flat as well.

Don´t hate your workI know, that it can be frustrating when you want to draw something and it doesn´t turn out as you imagined it. Then you will hate your drawing or you will think, that you can´t draw in in the worst case you may even stop drawing.

The truth is, you can´t expect to be good at drawing when you start out. It will take practice and you should look at your improvements and not at your failures. Just look at what you did wrong and make it better in the next drawing. Don´t get hung up on your mistakes.

Keep it light in the beginningDuring the sketching phase, you should keep your lines light. So don´t push the pencil down to hard. By keeping it light, you will be able to erase the lines easier.
