How To Draw An Anime Torso And Breasts

The whole body is well established, so now we only need to add the details. Even if you don’t care much about showing the muscle definition, the anatomy still influences the final look of the body, so you can’t ignore it. So let’s take a closer look at the anatomy of anime bodies.

The torso is the simplest to draw because it has big, clear muscle masses, and it doesn’t change shape too much. The abs and the pectorals are the muscles known even to laymen, so make sure to mark them.

I hate drawing people. Stick figures are always just so easier, right? Well, thats just because I didnt know how to draw people.

Figure drawing has not changed over the past centuries. We humans still look the same so the techniques and tips are the same. I found the best resources to actually be some older publications. No need to reinvent the wheel, right?

Andrew Loomis Figure Drawing For All Its Worth is a really meaty, technical guide for figure drawing. Like, seriously meaty. I would say it would be a great resource if you really want an in-depth study into the human figures. Its available as a free download here.

My absolute favorite guide to figure drawing is this 100-something page book Drawing the Head & Figure by Jack Hamm. Seriously, dont judge this book by its cover! Hamms book was published in the 80s which is very evident as soon as you see the dated hairstyles. Just dont mind the hair tips in this one.

Day : Drawing Hands & Feet

HandsWhen I was younger, I drew people who always had their hands tucked into their front pockets. Actually, I probably still do that now. I hate drawings hands.

Hiding the hands is a huge disservice to your drawing. These can be just as expressive as a persons face. Drawing good hands takes practice and again, a good grip on human anatomy.

Just like your stick figure , hands are more than just five straight lines for fingers. Your hands are composed of 27 bones, 14 of those are in your fingers. The small bones and joints of your hand are important to focus on if you want a good depiction of the hands for your drawing.

Many resources out there just give you a step-by-step on how to draw hands in a specific pose. I think the best guides are those who teach you the basic principles of drawing hands so that you can draw them in any pose.

Envato : I love this guide. It starts at the basic anatomy of construction of the hand and how you can utilize your knowledge of it to draw great hands. Highly recommended!

Art of Wei: This is another great video from this Youtuber. He also focuses on hand construction.

Draw with Jazza: This video is a quick and simple guide to drawing hands. He also has a longer, more detailed video if you want a slower and more comprehensive video.

Envato: If Envato had a great guide for drawing hands, then it makes sense that they also have a great one for feet. Again, they start with the basic construction of the foot and go from there.

Drawing Anime Hands A Step

Figure Drawing by AmyClark on DeviantArt

The glove/mitten method stems from the fact that most of us can better imagine and draw a glove or a mitten than a detailed anime hand.

You dont have to worry about drawing in fingers. With this method, you only worry about the general shapes. Controlling general shapes is basis for all good drawing. That is to say, every great drawing starts with the artist having full control of the general shape of what they are drawing.

Start drawing anime hands with a simple boxy shape of a glove or a mitten. With this type of simplification fingers are indicated with one rectangular shape, then the simplified form is drawn over with more detail and by adding divisions of the fingers.

Above is a good example of how the glove/mitten method works.

When you draw the simplified form, think about the general shape of the hand, its proportions, the general gesture. Worry about the details on the second pass.

Above is an example of a very simplified form drawn for the fist. Note that, although the fingers twist down, I was able to draw that in later.

It was easier to draw because the general shape and perspective of the drawing was resolved in the simplified and boxy under-drawing on the left.

Note that all of the drawings of anime hands I made for the tutorial start with the general shape of the palm.

Below are two more examples.

Day : Drawing Proportions

Now that your stick figure can do all sorts of things, we should probably make sure its proportional. Theres an easy way to do that. However, do remember that these just act as a good starting point. Not all people will follow these proportions as everyone is constructed differently.

The secret to a well-proportioned human body is to remember magic numbers as well as the alignment of our joints. A persons height is typically 7-8x the height of their head. Many guides on figure proportions use the same method or varying methods. From what Ive seen, the magic number for males is generally 8 while females are generally 7.

Envato In my opinion, this is one of the best guides out there. Very thorough but easy to read with clear pictures to help you understand the method.

Mr. Otter Art Studio This video has a great demonstration that utilizes the same method. However, the magic number used in this video is 7 . Often times, females follow the 7 head rule where males follow the 8 head rule.

ExerciseRemember those stick figure poses you made earlier? Lets try applying this new model to them. Remember your proportions and how each body part relates to each other. Follow the guides I referenced above to create a well-proportioned person.

Give Him His Eyes And Face

He is a human figure after all, so he will need his face. We will begin with his eyes, and we could revisit how we could draw one by giving my previous article a quick scan. But first draw a cross guidelines on the face, to guide us where we will put the eyes, nose and mouth. For better result, start with the eyes before the rest of the face. Section 3 Inking Your Drawing

All right things should be looking pretty good at this point. You have your character drawn the way you like and youre ready to take the plunge into inking. Theres no going back after this step.

Grab a quality, fine-tipped pen and very slowly and carefully go over your lines. Its best to not lift the pen halfway through a line try and maintain a steady solid pen stroke. Once everything is properly outlined, let it dry a bit, then gently erase any sketch lines that remain. If done properly, you should be left with a very clean looking drawing of your character.

Whether you are using a digital media or pen and paper, Tom Richmond has a great inking tutorial if you want to take a look.

Drawing Anime Hands Proportions

If youre familiar with my tutorials, you know that I am not a big proponent of learning exact proportions for everything. Proportions will change depending on what you want to draw. Proportions change given the perspective and foreshortening of the subject. Over time you must learn to gauge proportions and correct based on what you are drawing. However, there are a couple of rules that are very helpful in drawing the hand and we can use them for drawing anime hands.

Balance Of The Human Figure

Anime Figure Drawing

Have you ever seen an image of the figure below? It is called the Vitruvian Man.

It shows two crucial points that makes the figure drawing balanced well:

1. The length between the figure’s arms spread wide is the same as the length from its head to its feet.

2. When the figure’s arms and legs are open and extended, it forms a perfect circle.

With these two measurements, you can maintain the balance of the whole figure.

Drawing An Anime Head And Face

  • 1Draw an oval and divide it into 4 sections. This will be the basic outline of your anime characters head. The proportions dont have to be exact, but make the oval narrower at the bottom since that will be the chin. Once youve drawn the oval, draw a horizontal line through the center of it. Then, draw a vertical line through the center of it that intersects with the horizontal line. Later, you’ll use these lines as guides to draw the facial features.XResearch source
  • If you want your character to have a wider face, widen the bottom of the oval so its just slightly narrower than the top. Or, if you want your character to have a slender face, make the bottom of the oval even narrower than the top. There’s no single head shape used for all anime characters, so you can experiment until you find one you like.
  • 3Sketch the eyebrows above the horizontal line. Draw a long, downward curving line for each eyebrow. Make them slightly longer than the upper lash line you drew for the eyes. Then, thicken the ends of the brows that are at the center of the face.XResearch source
  • If youre drawing a feminine anime character, make the eyebrows fairly thin. For a masculine character, thicken the eyebrows so theyre more prominent on the face.
  • Make the nose the smallest feature on your characters face.
  • The nose will overlap with the vertical line you drew. To see it better, make it darker than the vertical line, or erase the vertical line around the nose.
  • Day : Drawing Structure

Understanding muscle structure is imperative to more realistic drawings of figures, but it actually also helps if you are just drawing cartoon figures. Even in simplified cartoon figures, a strong knowledge foundation of muscle structures will help you convey certain poses and action of these characters. Just think of the saying, you must master the rules before you can break them. Or something like that.

There really isnt a quick and dirty guide I can give you on drawing muscles because there are literally SO many of them, but here are a few great resources you can spend day 3 on.

Envato: This online guide briefly goes over the muscles and body fat. It was definitely a trip down memory lane for me with flashbacks to Anatomy 101. It is a wonderful guide.

Stick to Figure: This 2nd video of a 3 part series teaches you how to move from stick figure to human figure by using simple three-dimensional shapes. The third part of this series helps you understand the bodys contouring.

ExerciseSelect a few poses of people in action rock climbing, dancing, shooting a basketball. Focus on the muscles that are used during these actions and focus on the lines that the muscle creates on the body. Practice drawing a few people using three-dimensional shapes to first help guide you to form the body.
