Adding In Facial Features

How To Draw Anime Girl Face [Slow Narrated Tutorial] [No Timelapse]

Firstly, add the ears. From top to bottom they should go from the eye line to the nose line. Add in the nose, which can be of any shape but it must just touch the bottom of your horizontal nose line.

NOTE: To help with how big to make the eyes, the eye guideline from ear to ear should be roughly five eyes wide. This means that your eyes should have an eyes length that separates them in the middle.

The eyebrows require simple curved lines above the eyes and the placement doesnt really matter too much, they just need to follow the placement of the eyes. You can experiment with different shapes and placement to portray various different emotions.

Lastly, draw the mouth line halfway between the bottom of the nose guideline and the bottom of the lip line.

That’s the proportions sorted, now let’s make it Manga…

Add The Facial Features

Draw two circles on the center guideline but leave a small opening at the bottom of each these will be your eyes. When youre drawing anime, the eyes are one of the most important features and are usually much bigger than the other facial features. Sketch in an arch over the top of each circle and a curved line around the far side of each to frame the eyes.

From here you can also add in a small V shape on the center guideline for the nose, a slightly curved line for a smiling mouth, and a couple of short and light pencil strokes underneath the eyes for a blushing effect.

Adding the facial features starts to bring your character to life.

Shade & Finish The Drawing

For some very basic shading you can add shadows in the most common places. In this case they will be as follows:

  • Tiny shadows around the eyelids
  • Small shadows below the eyelashes
  • Very tiny shadow to one side of the nose
  • Fully shaded ears
  • Large shadow on the neck in the shape o the chin
  • Fully shaded inner part of the hair between the head/neck and the side hair

As mentioned earlier you can also add some hair highlights as sort of white zigzag lines across the hair. As suggested earlier you can simply leave this area white and then color around it. Alternatively you can use a white correction pen to add them in over top or do it digitally.

Draw The Face And Neck

Working on an anime boy drawing is very similar to creating a girl character. Your first steps should be to draw the outline for the face and neck before you can add the fun facial features.

Lightly sketch a freehand circle with a vertical guideline going straight down the middle. Youll want this to extend past the bottom of the circle as far as youd like the chin to be. Then draw a slightly curved line down each side of the circle, sloping in more toward the bottom of the vertical line. Where these meet will be the bottom of the face.

Underneath the face, draw two vertical lines for the neck and a line off each side for the top of the shoulders.

Using guidelines helps to position all of your characters features correctly.

How to Draw Anime or Manga Faces: 15 Steps (with Pictures)

When spacing the eyes horizontally you will want to leave about enough room between them that you can fit in another eye.

When actually drawing the eyes make them fairly narrow with relatively thick sets of top eyelashes.

At this stage you can simply outline the basic shape of the eyes without drawing all of the smaller details such as the eyelashes.

The goal is to first correctly place all the facial features.

Add The Final Touches

Your anime drawing is almost complete! Sketch two vertical lines directly under the face for the neck, making these as close together as youd like depending on how skinny or wide the neck should be.

Finish up the facial features before adding in the final touches.

Anime hair will be the biggest difference in your drawing, depending on if youre working on an anime girl drawing or an anime boy drawing.

For boy hair, draw a small dot about one inch from the top of the face circle. From here, youll draw curved lines down to create a floppy hairstyle thats common for male characters. Youll frame these out by looping the lines up on the other side of your first lines to create shapes that look like a palm tree.

Hair on anime characters is typically messy so dont worry about it looking perfect.

For girl characters, youll start with those same curved lines that you would on a boy character, but keep these to only one or two lines. Youll then draw bigger curved lines around the outside of the face to create longer hair. Shade the outer edges of the hair to make it stand out and add any additional lines youd like to give it some more shape.

Once your drawing is complete, erase the guidelines before coloring or going over in ink.

Once youve added in the hair, you can erase your original guidelines and your drawing is finished!

In general, drawing in the style of anime may be easier for someone, because in this style there is much less realism than, for example, in drawings from American classic comics. But this is not always the case, there are exceptions. For some, a 60s comic-style drawing of Spider-Man will be easier to draw than an anime or manga character. So, lets get down to the step-by-step instructions for drawing an anime girls face.

Art tools for this illustration:

  • pencil
  • black marker, ink, fountain pen
  • colored pencils
  • drawing paper

You can try to draw on your device, for example, on a laptop, tablet, or computer .

Time needed: 35 minutes.

    Add The Other Features

But before we finish the details of our anime eyes, lets first sketch the details of the face. Now this is the style of drawing I adopted I add the rough details first before going for the rest of the eyes. Note that I have problems with symmetry in the past, and I found this approach to be useful in checking for symmetry. If I get something out of place, it is easier to make corrections with only rough sketches. With the lines as our guides, we draw the nose, mouth and the ears. See below on how to do it.

Drawing The Smaller Details Of The Face & Finishing The Line Drawing

At this stage you can erase the parts of the face that are covered by the hair and add the smaller details o the eyes such as the eyelashes, pupils, and highlights. You can also shade in the eyelashes and add some more details to the hair.

When drawing the eyes you can lightly outline the highlights with a very light lines so that if you shade the eyes you dont accidentally shade them in also.

Once you are done you should have a finished line drawing of an anime girls head and face.

This is technically a finished drawing and you can leave it as is but if you want to go a little bit further you can move on to the next step for the shading.

You can see the finished line drawing of the facial features without the hair in the way in the illustration above.

    Expressions For Anime Eyes

In real life and in the manga/anime world, eyes are one of the most important features to express emotion. Remember that a series of facial muscles tighten or relax, depending on the expression you want to achieve.Lets take a look at the eyelids, the inner eye, and the eyebrows.

The emotions intended in these examples are easy to understand.

In example 1, the eyebrow is a bit tense, but the eye is relaxed and shining. This conveys a worried state or maybe missing someone or something.

In example 2, the eyebrow is arched vertically, and the eye is closed, so we can deduce that the character is happy.

In the next example , there is no shine to the eye, the iris is completely white, and the pupil is reduced significantly. This shows that the character is aggressive. Note that the eyebrow is arched in the opposite direction of the happy one in example 2, which also signifies anger.

Let us check all these expressions to deduce their meaning: 4 is suspicion, 5 is worry, 6 is neutral or observing, 7 is shock, 8 is sadness, and 9 is shock or madness, depending on the situation.

    How To Color Anime Eyes

Here you can see the results from using different colors and blending modes. I used the Overlay mode for purple, Vivid Light for yellow, and Pin Light for the blue tones and the pink details. They blend great with the grey layer.

The key is to know where you want to place the grey gradients, the darker areas, and the highlights. Please go back to chapter 4. Styles and greyscale when in doubt.

Try different colors and see which ones are best for the effect youre trying to achieve. In this illustration, I chose two complimentary colors: purple and yellow with pink and blue tints.

    Grayscale coloring steps:

In 1, I simply started with the previously created grayscale drawing.

In steps 2 and 3, choose any color you fancy purple, with some blue in my case and try a blending mode that blends well with the greyscale.

In steps 4 and 5, I add some yellow using the Vivid light blending mode.

In step 6, I usually soften the dots a bit, by using the eraser or decreasing the layer opacity.

Finally, in step 7, I just add the finishing touches to emphasize volumes and textures.

Finishing The Drawing By Applying Shading

To finish the drawing you can add some very basic shading.

For very generalized shading with no one clear light source shade the areas most likely to have shadows. These shadows will usually be:

    • Cast by the hair on the forehead area
    • Around the eyelids
    • Upper area of the neck
    • Inner/Background area of the hair

How To Draw A Realistic Anime Face Step By Step

This step by step tutorial shows how to draw a semi-realistic looking female anime face that differs from the more traditional anime styles.

Drawing a realistic looking anime face is a little more challenging than drawing a standard anime or manga style face. While the actual drawing process itself is not much more difficult the challenge comes in balancing between semi-realistic facial features and maintaining an anime look.

To help with that challenge this tutorial provides a detailed breakdown of the drawing process. It includes an explanation of how to draw the head and each of the major facial features to achieve a more realistic look.

Be sure to make light lines for the initial stages of the drawing so that you can easily erase parts of them later. The lines in the examples are dark simply so that you can see them. You can go over your drawing with darker lines after you are sure everything is in the right place and after you erase all o the guide lines and parts of the face that will be hidden by the hair.
