What Requires More Skill

The immediate answer from most non-artists is that realism is innately harder. Getting something to look realistic is tricky, absolutely. But that doesnt mean that anime isnt tricky either. All art is tricky, just not in the way that we expect.

From the students that Ive taught and the artists that Ive met, Ive noticed a pattern when it comes to their illustrative techniques. Realists tend to have a tougher time drawing cartoons and anime, while cartoonists and anime artists have a tougher time drawing realism. However, as time goes on and cartoonists grow better with their work, suddenly realism isnt so hard for them anymore. However, realists have a tougher time breaking out of that non-stylized shell, and find it tricky to break free from the rules that hold them.

Its not that anime art is easier than realism it just takes a different skill set and uses a different set of rules.

One thing that I teach sometimes is that you can think of realism as the default when it comes to styles. That doesnt mean its bad, its just that youre not changing anything. Compare a realistic portrait to a photo, and you shouldnt see much difference. Thats why its the default youre drawing what you see, and not changing anything about it.

Drawing Long Anime Hair

Good to draw from

Long straight hair is probably one of the most common hairstyles in anime and is fairly easy to draw.

Above you can see the breakdown of the long hair drawing example into:

  • Red Front Hair
  • Green Side Hair
  • Blue Back/Top Hair

You can apply a similar breakdown to drawing other hairstyles as well. Thinking of the hair this way can make the drawing process a lot easier to manage.

Keeping this in mind we can move on to the actual drawing process.

How To Draw Anime Pigtails

The pigtails hairstyle is usually used to depict youthfulness and innocence. This can also imply that a character is childish and immature. Many tsunderes possess this hairstyle, although not all characters with pigtails are tsunderes.

Step 1

Make a drawing of the base. The base consists of the head, the shoulders that the hair will rest on, the body and face is optional. Indicate the hairline on the forehead.

A good general rule is that the hairline will take up one-fourth of the heads total height . Additionally, most hairlines should be a curved line across the forehead that gradually swoops over the earline.

Step 2

Draw the hair that goes over the forehead. For this hairstyle, you can use any type of bangs or pulled-back hair. In this example, I used the classic triple bang, with a long piece in the middle. Make the bangs curve and rest on the forehead to show volume.

Step 3

Draw the hair at the sides of the head, near the ears. These side pieces frame the face and create the illusion of fuller cheeks and a more youthful face.

Step 4

Draw the hair at the back of the head. Pigtails are two ponytails on both sides of the head. You can make them wider or narrower according to how thick the hair is supposed to be.

Additionally, you can adjust how high or low the pigtails are and how far apart they are from each other. Pigtails usually swoop outwards because of volume, but thin pigtails can swoop inwards.

Step 5

Space The Eyes Horizontally & Draw Their Basic Outlines

When spacing the eyes horizontally you will want to leave about enough room between them that you can fit in another eye.

When actually drawing the eyes make them fairly narrow with relatively thick sets of top eyelashes.

At this stage you can simply outline the basic shape of the eyes without drawing all of the smaller details such as the eyelashes.

The goal is to first correctly place all the facial features.

Common Styles Of Anime Girl Hair

This is where artists take the basics of drawing anime hair and come up with unique and character-specific hairstyles.

Youâll notice how itâs all about clumps of hair, how they are placed, directed, and combined together to make some of the most common anime girlsâ hairstyles.

Layered Hair

â

Layers help frame the face and add extra oomph to a characterâs look. Layered styles can be long or short like Tokizaki Mayaâs long gradual layers from Hatsukoi, or Nishizono Mioâs short blue choppy bob from Little Busters!

Straight Hair

â

Considering the overwhelming amount of straight hair in Japanese culture, itâs no surprise that straight hair is the clear winner when it comes to anime hairstyles. A shining example is Classic Literature Clubâs Eru Chitanda.

Hime Cut

A hime cut combines straight bangs a thin, blunt jaw-length layer and straight hair. Itâs become so pervasive in the anime world that itâs also called the anime or jaw-drop haircut. You can spot it on Yumeko Jabami from Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler.

Ponytails & Twintails

â

Often the epitome of the female anime look, ponytails and twintails are a go-to hairstyle. Consider Sailor Moonâs iconic pigtails or Mai Kawakamiâs side pony from Myriad Colors Phantom World.

Buns

â

Buns are another innocent, feminine hairstyle. They come in many styles, but we like Kaguraâs Chinese-style covered buns from Gintama.

Add The Small Details

Mini tutorial: How to draw female manga/ anime hair

After you finish drawing the outlines of the hair and placing all of the facial features you can then draw all of the small details.

In this case those will be:

  • Inner details of the eyes
  • Hair folds

While the eyes in that example are slightly different all of the drawing steps can be applied to the example in this tutorial.

You can see a basic step by step drawing of the details of the eyes above. Also please note that the irises are shaded grey just to make the highlights in the final drawing a bit easier to see. If you are going to be coloring the eyes you may wish to make them a different color.

When done with the eyes you can add a few extra hair folds as shown in the first example.

Finally you can also add a little beauty mark/mole just slightly below one of the eyes . This will again help emphasize that the girl is beautiful as some famous models have these.

You can see a slightly larger version of the face above to make it a little bit easier to see.

As the title states the focus of this tutorial is on drawing a beautiful female anime character. In anime and manga these often have roles such as the pretty girl at school and may not necessarily be the protagonist. However drawing an anime girl to look beautiful is actually a bit of a challenge as most of them are drawn to be fairly cute by default. To help this tutorial gives a through guide on how to draw and position the head and facial features for a pretty girl character archetype.

Please note that if youve seen other similar tutorials here on AnimeOutline there may be a few overlapping or similar information. However this particular character does have slightly different proportions so read carefully.

Also note that while the proportions in this tutorial can help achieve the beautiful girl look, this is just one example and there are many more ways to draw such a character.

Overall the tutorial combines good drawing practices that can apply to art in general with tips on getting a particular anime/manga style look.

Drawing Anime Body & Pose

Poses, figures, bodies in anime and manga has always been and will still defy laws of proportions and rules of the human figure.

If you think anime movies like Afro Samurai and feel the shapes of the characters body movements, the flow of hands and legs, you quickly see that they genuinely defy natural proportions of the human figure.

However, that being said, the characters still feel and look like real humans, and that is because they always follow rules of muscles and proportions. Even though anime characters usually somewhat distorts the human figure, they still have the correct dimensions if you exclude the head .

Position & Draw The Elf Ears

The way elf ears are drawn can sometimes just be a style decision but other times they can also help emphasize a characters personality. For example more upwards pointing ears can mean a more upbeat personality. Downwards pointed ears on the other hand can be attributed to characters with a more a more mild or shy personality.

One explanation for this can be that animals tend to raise their ears when alert/on guard and lower them when scared. This is something that pretty much everyone knows and is used to. Therefore drawing pointy anime/manga ears in a particular ways can help send a visual message about the character they are attributed to.

You can use the first two pairs in the example for the regular/upbeat face and the last set for the mild/shy one.

    For drawing normal ears see:

    Drawing Anime Hair Basics

If youâre a beginner to the world of drawing anime hair, youâll need to keep a few basic ideas in mind.

    #1 Draw Forwarding Facing

That means your character will be facing straight at you, like an ID picture. Why? Because you wonât have to consider the perspective or angles of a character whose head is tilted to one side.

    #2 Use a Template

This will save you time and ensure you have the right proportions.

    #3 Draw Clumps, Not Strands

Take a look in the mirror and notice how many individual strands of hair you have, their texture, the different colors that make up your overall hair color, and the way the light hits it. Thatâs a lot to include when drawing.

To simplify the process, anime artists draw clumps of hair, instead of individual floating strands.

    #4 Practice Your Clumps

Clumps are made of two curved lines that are farther apart at the top of the clump and gradually come closer together until they meet at the bottom. It looks like an upside down cone.

Get in the habit of practicing the technique, because drawing anime hair is all about clumps and the cones they taper into.

This is the basic cone structure at the end of each clump of hair:

You can work up to different types of cones and clumps to create different hair textures.

    #5 Direct Your Hair Clumps

Think about where your clumps point. Bangs and straight hair will tend to point down. Wavy hair points toward the face. Spiky hair points outwards. Messy hair will point in alternating directions.

You can indicate the area of hair at the crown of the head with a single line. To do this, orientate yourself again on the shape of the constructed head to reproduce the curve of the skull reasonably accurately. At the vertex, you can draw one or two intersections of the hairs to suggest specific hair flow.

Reinforce the hairline by drawing auxiliary lines at the level of the forehead to divide the hairstyle into separate strands.

    Drawing An Anime School Girl

  • 1Make an outline of the anime girl using stick figures and shapes. First, sketch a circle for the head. Add an angled shape on the lower part of the circle for the chin and jaw. Use a short line for the neck. Connect a curved line from the neck down to where the pelvis would be located. Draw a four-pointed shape for the thorax and attach more lines for the limbs. Use a triangle as guide for the hands.
  • 2Use the stick figure as guide. Draw the girl’s body and add shape to the drawing. Take note of the proportions and where joints are located. Add a crossed line to the face and thorax to help you determine accurate positioning of body parts later.
  • 3Sketch the eyes. Position it, or, more conventionally them, with the help of the crossed line as an outline. Add small curved strokes for the eyebrows. Sketch an angle for the nose and a small curved line for the lips.
  • 4Design a hairstyle for your anime character. Here in this illustration, it is a simple style that can be achieved by sketching slanted and curved strokes. You can also add a bow or a pin or any accessory on the hair for design.
  • 5Choose a design for the characterâs outfit. School uniforms are a common choice. A simple blazer and pleated skirt would be nice.
  • 6Refine details and erase unnecessary lines.
  • 7Color your drawing. You might want to make it neutral colors, so they look good, not so they clash. The choice is yours though, team orange and purple if you like. It’s your drawing.
