How to Draw Manga: 10 Ways to Draw Ears!

For the second tutorial, we are going to just focus on drawing an anime face from a 3/4 view

STEP 1- DRAWING THE JAW

You should start by drawing the Jaw and left side of the face. First, draw a curved convex line for the forehead, next a concave line for the side of the face . After you should draw another convex line towards the center and another one after to the right. The pointy end will be the chin.

STEP 2- DRAWING THE CROSS

The cross should be drawn as to curved lines, one vertical, connecting the center of the chin with the top of the forehead. The other line should be horizontal and should be drawn across the face.

STEP 3- DRAWING THE NECK

The neck will be drawn as to curved lines, one coming from under the jaw and the other one paralleling it that will connect the ear we will draw next with the upper part of the torso.

STEP 4- DRAWING THE EARS

The ear will be drawn as a curved line align with the horizontal line. The interior of the ear will be drawn also as curved lines.

STEP 5- DRAWING THE EYES

The eyes will be drawn aligned with the top of the ears.

STEP 6- DRAWING THE NOSE

The nose will be the next step. You should draw it aligned with the bottom of the ear.

STEP 7- DRAWING THE MOUTH

As shown in the image above, directly under the nose, draw a short horizontal line. Both sides of the mouth will be aligned with the center of the eyes.

STEP 8- DRAWING THE EYEBROWS

On top of the eyes, the eyebrows will be drawn as two curved lines.

STEP 9- DRAWING THE HAIR

Now You Can Draw The Rim Of The Beanie

In this part of our guide on how to draw a beanie, you will be adding the wide rim of the beanie. You will be drawing this by adding lots of curved lines that connect to one another at the base of the hat portion of the beanie.

Then, you can use some more curved lines for the sides of the rim and then finish it with more rounded lines connecting to one another.

These ones should be positioned in such a way that they will line up with the ones above them. Finally, you can add some vertical lines to the rim of the hat as shown in the reference image.

Add Long Pants Or Jeans

Long pants or jeans are the simplest addition to your character when it comes to anime clothes drawing. Along the lines you already have for the legs, draw some slightly curved lines on the outside edge to give a baggy appearance .

From here, draw curved lines around the ankles for a pooling effect and a couple of light lines around the knees for the natural crease of the pants.

Draw around the outside of the leg lines before erasing these to create a baggy pants look on your character.

Guide To Drawing Ears

Learn ear drawing tips and tricks to make your character illustrations more realistic! Eridey explains in detail how to draw ears from different angles and how to apply the basics to fantasy characters like fairies.

Ears are unique and, even if they come by pairs, there arent two cut from the same mold. Lets see a bit of their common basic structure before we start with their diversities:

In general terms, all ears follow the same basic structure. A magic formula! Practice a couple of times to learn it by heart. You can use the sketch above to go through the following steps.

  • The contour of the ear is created from the helix and the lobe, as you can see, consists of a single stroke. The helix has the shape of a hook and the lobe is a smaller curve at the end of the ear .
  • The antihelix spreads out starting from the lobe and creates two paths which meet the internal edge of the helix.
  • The final strokes are the tragus and the antitragus. You can also close the inner part of the helix curve a little more.
  • In the following examples, we will observe that some features are more pronounced or more subtle than others, but it is easy to identify each part of the ear, so if you draw from your imagination, bear in mind that your purpose is to create comprehensible shapes:

This is a very good art tutorial on how to draw the manga head from the side view.

The artist explains her drawing process pretty nicely, and its easy to follow through. What I like about this tutorial is that the artist is explaining the differences between the female and male heads.

When we think about reality and how our heads differ from male to female, you dont notice so much difference. Yes, a male might have a bit more prominent chin than females, but overall we look about the same.

However, in the manga, there is a clear difference between male and female heads and faces, and in this video, the artist brings those differences up in a really nice and clear way.

Ever had trouble drawing ears? You’ve come to the right place! Follow the steps below to learn how.

Add Curved Lines Within The Inner Ear

Time to start mapping out the general shape of the ear. At the widest of the line you just made, closest to the gap we left in the original sweet potato shape, were going to curve the line towards the back of the ear.

Stop about 1/3 of the way in and then create a downward curving line to cut that off and create an almond shape.

Now, below that lets create the cartilage! At the bottom part of the gap we left in step 1, make a little mountain and extend the top line just a little bit. At that extension, were going to then bring a final line inward to follow the bottom line of the almond shape we made.

  • 1Draw a circle on your paper with a vertical line running through the middle. Use a pencil so youre able to erase your lines if you make a mistake. Lightly draw the circle in the center of a piece of paper so you have room to add features to it. Find the middle of your circle and lightly sketch a straight line that extends from the top of the circle down your sheet of paper so you know where the middle of the face is.XResearch source
  • Start by drawing your circle large so you have room to draw the features. Otherwise, your lines may get messy and it could be hard to draw correctly.
  • Tip: If you have trouble drawing a circle without help, either use a compass or trace something circular.

  • 2Make a guide line for the eyes a third of the way up from the bottom of the circle. Measure about a third of the way up from the bottom of your circle and use your pencil to make a mark. Use a straightedge to draw a horizontal line that extends past the edges of the circle to use as a guide for the characters eyes. Dont apply too much pressure when you draw the line since it will be hard to erase otherwise.XResearch source
  • Your measurements do not need to be precise. If you dont have a ruler, estimate the distance with the end of your pencil instead.
  • If youre drawing a female character, place the mark at a distance equal to of the circles diameter since female anime and manga characters tend to have rounder faces.

How to Draw Anime Ears, a Simple Three

The hoodie or hoods in general are very common in anime and manga. They can be worn by a wide variety of characters for many reasons.

Start by drawing an outline of the head, hair and the top part of the shoulders. As a hood generally will not press much on the head you can draw the hair volume the same as when no head ware is being worn.

Draw the hood itself in two parts, the outline of the fabric and the hole in it for the face. The outer shape of the hood should first pretty much trace the shape of the hair and then get wider as it goes down towards the neck. Around the neck area it should curve back inwards towards the head.

Draw the inner shape of the hood similar to the outer shape shape but start from around the forehead and end around the upper chest area with a sort of pointy downwards tip .

Erase the parts of the head/hair covered by the hood.

Add another line around the inner part of hood that first traces its shape almost exactly and then moves away from it around the shoulders and goes towards the bottom tip of the inner shape of the hood.

Around the area where this line starts to split away from the main inner outline of the hood draw a second pair of lines.

To finish the drawing you can add a zipper as well as the details of the hair .

You can see a large drawing of the hoodie with some basic shading above. Generally you will want to shade the inner part of a hood darker then the rest as that area almost always tends to be in shadow.

How To Draw An Ear From The Back Three Quarter View

If you can remember how you learned to draw the ear from the side view, youre now going to be turning the ear slightly to combine the side view with the back view to give you the three-quarter view.

I think its worth saying again that even though its unlikely that you will need to draw the ear from this view very often, its still an important exercise to help you better understand the ear, that will actually improve your ability to draw an ear from any angle.

To simplify the major shape of drawing the ear from this view you can think of it like a question mark.

The hook part of the question mark forms the top of the ear, and as it curves down towards the bottom the ear lobe creates the dot on the bottom of the question mark.

Start by first drawing the outer rim of the ear. If you are following the video, you can see that the instructor is starting to draw the outer rim at the very bottom of the ear.

Then, he continues to draw that line stretching upward and around towards the front of the ear, before ending as it turns inward towards the middle of the ear.

Leave a little bit of separation between the rim of the ear and the ear flap in the middle-front. When learning how to draw an ear from the back, remember the flap is the little piece that sticks out and partially covers the hole of the ear where sound can enter.

    Add The Facial Features

How to Draw Manga: 6 Ways to Draw Ears

Draw two circles on the center guideline but leave a small opening at the bottom of each these will be your eyes. When youre drawing anime, the eyes are one of the most important features and are usually much bigger than the other facial features. Sketch in an arch over the top of each circle and a curved line around the far side of each to frame the eyes.

From here you can also add in a small V shape on the center guideline for the nose, a slightly curved line for a smiling mouth, and a couple of short and light pencil strokes underneath the eyes for a blushing effect.

Adding the facial features starts to bring your character to life.

  • Draw the front section of the hair. There are different ways to approach this step, depending on the hairstyle you want. For this tutorial, were going to go with swooping bangs.
  • To achieve this look, youll need to draw a few spiky sections. The sections should come down from the hairline and curve to one side.

  • Outline the top, sides, and ends of the hair. Sketch curved lines along both sides of the head, down to where you want the hair to end. The lines should start at the center, slightly above the head.
  • Start by following the curvature of the head, and then straighten each line once youre halfway down. Afterward, connect each end of the hair to the hairline using a line.

  • Add some details to the hair by drawing several lines from the roots to the ends of the hair.
  • Get rid of the lines that indicate the head and the hairline. These lines are usually not visible since theyre covered with hair.
  • Color or shade the hair, and youre done.
  • Add The Final Touches

Your anime drawing is almost complete! Sketch two vertical lines directly under the face for the neck, making these as close together as youd like depending on how skinny or wide the neck should be.

Finish up the facial features before adding in the final touches.

Anime hair will be the biggest difference in your drawing, depending on if youre working on an anime girl drawing or an anime boy drawing.

For boy hair, draw a small dot about one inch from the top of the face circle. From here, youll draw curved lines down to create a floppy hairstyle thats common for male characters. Youll frame these out by looping the lines up on the other side of your first lines to create shapes that look like a palm tree.

Hair on anime characters is typically messy so dont worry about it looking perfect.

For girl characters, youll start with those same curved lines that you would on a boy character, but keep these to only one or two lines. Youll then draw bigger curved lines around the outside of the face to create longer hair. Shade the outer edges of the hair to make it stand out and add any additional lines youd like to give it some more shape.

Once your drawing is complete, erase the guidelines before coloring or going over in ink.

Once youve added in the hair, you can erase your original guidelines and your drawing is finished!
