Top lighting will basically be the reverse of the bottom lighting described above. Most of the face will be shaded with the lighter areas being placed as follows:

Forehead will be completely lit up as it curves towards the above light source
Nose the upper side as it faces towards the light
Cheeks the upper area of the cheekbones
Upper Lip as it sticks out just a little bit and will catch some of the light
Chinupper area of chin as the chin curves a little bit outwards from the face

How Anime Hair Is Shaded

Generally anime and manga hair is shaded without gradients and has hard transition between its light and dark areas. This makes the shading process much faster but at the same time a little tricky as it can be difficult to figure out where the boundary between light and dark should be placed.

Where the actual shading is placed depends on the lighting conditions the artist wishes to show.

Anime characters are generally shaded in two ways:

Generalized shading where there character or object are well lit from most sides

Shading with strong one directional light source

This particular tutorial will focus on the more generic shading as its very common and can be used in most scenes. Please note however that even in the well lit lighting setup the strongest light will generally comes from somewhere above . This means that shadows will tend to form towards the bottom parts of the hair.

Dont however confuse this with a one directional light source form above which would be more like shining a flashlight down on someone in a dark room.

Finally also keep in mind that anime/manga style shading does not need to be perfectly accurate or overly realistic. The goal is to have just enough basis in reality so that it looks believable.

How Can I Check My Skin Type

Gently pat a blotting paper on the different areas of your face. Hold the sheet up to the light to determine how much oil is visible. If the sheet picked up little to no oil, you most likely have dry skin. If the blotting sheet reveals oil from the forehead and nose areas, your skin is normal/combination.

Painting Skin Tones In Tinted Light

There are times when you’ll want skin to take on more of a cast from the surroundings. For instance, if a character is standing near blue drapes, a sliver of blue may appear on the highlights or shadows on the skin. General Lighting Anime Face Shading

This shading option is usually suitable to most common lighting conditions where there is no particularly strong one directional light source.

In this type of general lighting the shadows will usually be drawn as follows:

Forehead shadows cast by the hair
Eyelids tiny shadows as these areas are indented in the head
Nose small shadow to one side
Neck a large shadow cast by the head

People looking at your drawing will be drawn to the lightest areas of the drawing. Determine the area that you want viewers to focus on and make it the brightest.

2Make a value scale from light to dark on a separate piece of paper. Draw a long rectangle and separate it with lines into 10 equal pieces. Shade the square on one side of the rectangle with your darkest value. Start to add value to the adjacent square so it is lighter than the darkest value. Only use the values in your scale as you shade in your drawing.

Use the same type of paper your drawing is on. Different papers have different textures and affect how the shades look.

Aim to have smooth transitions between each of the squares rather than having drastic changes in value. The square next to your lightest shade shouldnt be too dark.

Your darkest shadow is called the core shadow.

Tips For Mixing Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paint looks a little bit darker dry than when it is wet. So make the paint color slightly lighter than you’d like the final outcome to be.

It can be tough to recreate specific color using acrylic paint the second time, so if you’re looking for the perfect tone for a large piece or an ongoing series, make notes of the colors that went into the mixture. Better yet, mix your acrylic paint in large batches so that you will have plenty on hand.

While white paint is helpful to attain skin tones, use black paint very sparingly. Black paint can react with the yellow in skin tones to create a greenish, muddy cast. If you need to make a skin tone darker, use a small amount of each primary color in equal quantity, rather than adding black paint to the mix.

Follow the angles and curves of objects with the shapes of your line to simulate a three-dimensional form. For example, shade a round object with curved lines rather than straight lines.

2Use cross-hatching to shade quickly. Draw the cross-hatching lines close together to make a densely shaded area on your drawing or spread them apart to make it lighter.

Use hatch marks without a second layer to make a lighter shadow.

Instead of dots make short lines that overlap to make shading in a more Impressionist style.

Layer : Insert A Light Bluish Purple Color Around The Eyes

Create a new layer, and clip it to layer 1 that you created earlier.

The skin around the eyes is thin, so the blue color from blood vessels comes through.

That is why even for a drawing, if you paint a light bluish purple color with the airbrush around the eyes, it will make it look translucent.

With a deeper color, adjust it by lowering the opacity.

After finishing the darkest areas, Emma has quickly moved on to the rest of Aang’s face as he waits patiently to come to life. You don’t need to think about infusing the nib with the Mixing Chamber just yet – I know, that’s the best part – and forget about blending techniques for a moment.

Instead, look around at the rest of the areas of the skin. Other than the darkest areas, the skin is still the color of the paper. So, Emma has gone with the Nude and Sand pens to add more dimension to the face. This is a pretty easy part, as you already have the visual goal of which are the darkest areas. So, you know where to hit the blend when it comes time to do that.

Start at the lightest areas and color towards the darkest areas. That way, you’ll be adding the midtones and make your job of blending much easier. If you have a much bigger gap between the lightest and darkest color, the blending might not look as smooth as you want. By having smaller space between the two tones, you’re able to carefully blend towards the saturated color while maintaining the realism of the skin.

Anime and manga generally use a technique known as Cel shading which is shading without gradients. Cel shading is generally much faster and easier to apply to a drawing than realistic shading which makes it great for shading quickly shading multiple frames of an animation or many panels of manga.

Take Light Source Into Account And Color The Shadowy Areas

Emma has started off by using a Chameleon Pen to mark the darker, more shadowy areas of Aang. You won’t need to infuse your Chameleon Pen yet, as Emma is marking the darker areas first. As you can see in the image above, the shadowy and darkest parts of Aang are easy to see on the left side of his face – which is the right side from our point of view – his right ear, his nose, the top of his eyes along with his neck.

That’s all down to the light source that’s been picked. There’s no set rule on that, apart from just pick one light source and stick with it so you know which parts of your drawing will be darker and which will be lighter.

To do something similar to what Emma has done think about using Burnt Umber or Caramel as the darkest tone and color with smooth transitions.

Coloring & Shading Order

When coloring and shading a drawing you want to start with the largest areas of the drawing first and work down to the smaller details. You will also want color in your whole drawing before applying the shadows.

If you are going to be drawing on paper be sure to leave the highlighted areas white. If you are going to be coloring digitally you can add the highlights after you color the entire drawing.

Bottom Lit Anime Face Shading

When the light is coming from the bottom pretty much the entire face will be lit up with the shadows being cast as follows:

Chin a small shaded area at the top of the chin as the chin usually tends to stick out a bit and that bump will cast a tiny shadow
Upper Lip the upper lip will cast a very small shadow as it sticks out just a little bit blocking some of the light
Nose upper area as the nose will block some of the light going upwards casting a shadow
Cheeks as the cheekbones also tend to stick out a little they will create some shadows
Forehead will pretty much be entirely dark as it curves away from the bottom light source

Mix Shadows And Highlights

Once you’ve gotten the exact right skin tone, create a “family” of tones around your chosen tone. This is a time when you can use black paint to your advantage. Mix a gradient of variations on your final skin tone with black or white paint so that you have paint in various related tones ready to create shadows or highlights in your work.

Mix Together Equal Parts Of Each Primary Color

Just about every skin tone contains a little yellow, blue and red, but in different ratios. Once you’ve done this a few times, you might start with more of one color or another. But to start, go ahead and mix equal parts of each primary color with a palette knife.

Your outcome will likely be somewhat dark. This is a good thing! In general, it’s easier to make skin tones lighter with acrylic than darker.
