People avoid approaching strangers, with the general assumption that people prefer to be left alone. Certainly, if I went to Japan I wouldn’t expect to see my least favorite part of the holiday season someone ringing a goddamn bell in my face every time I go to the store. Sure, they have festivals and noisy pachinko parlors, but probably less of the aggressive street soliciting I have to deal with in Chicago.
